Sounds a bit like the concept of the Philip K Dick book I’m reading at the moment - The Man in the High Castle - about what the 20th century would have been like if Germany and Japan won the war. PKD seemed well attuned to the fundamentals of real economics - all the books of his I’ve read so far have some aspect related to it, like the extremely scarce moss that was used as money in I think “The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich” or “Ubik”
