Great episode as always. Really appreciate the acknowledgement of us fitness enthusiasts who do struggle with chronic digestive conditions. After all, there's enough low kcal dense food options out there to never worry about a calorie or hunger while cutting (theoretically), but at least half if not more of those are a total no-go for me. Eating on a cut (or a bulk) is tedious enough and chronic GI conditions make it even more isolating.

Hey I also have chronic GI symptoms, and reducing fiber and eating a mostly carnivore diet has really helped me. It can work for cutting or bulking, I just adjust my fat/protein ratio depending on my goals.

An interesting thought I had regarding people with more adaptive metabolisms: Do people with less adaptive metabolisms have the same experience as those with? An energy deficit is still a deficit. So, if two people reach the same level of leanness on very different caloric intakes, does the having a less adaptive metabolism offer any real benefits? I would imagine no, with the one caveat that having the ability to eat certain things or more socially might have its own psychological benefits. I would imagine an adaptive metabolism is a one that attempts to solve the issue of an unstable food environment and thus excels at preservation when calories are scarce and can switch into high gear when calories are plentiful. I guess my second question would be, do those with adaptive metabolisms see a slowing in metabolism either as a consequence of time (sensitivity) or what? I find that it generally takes a fairly substantial increase in calories before I see consistent trends up in weight. Once weight gain stalls, it seems smaller changes resume stalls but also with a preference towards bodyfat. Really the happiest period always seems to be pushing calories until weight trends up and then its meh.

Great podcast episode, Menno is stacked with knowledge. Was a little disappointed with his take on veganism in relation to animal ethics though. I think the rights reciprocity argument is pretty bad because I don't think it's fair to hold non-agential beings (individuals who don't have the capacity to understand ethics) morally accountable for their actions. I think we can really only apply ethics to our interactions with such beings. An example of this would be how we would view a 2 year old human killing someone vs a 30 year old human killing someone. The ability to understand morality matters. Animals may not be able to reciprocate morality but I don't think that gives us free reign to breed them into existence, exploit and kill them for our own benefit. A further example of of moral interactions with animals: say you're walking your dog somewhere and a stray dog attacks yours. You're faced with the options of either killing the aggressor with your gun or letting your dog be killed. While I don't think you could say that what the stray dog is doing is immoral, being a moral agent yourself you can intervene with self-defense of behalf of your own dog. In this situation, a moral judgement is only applied to your interaction with the dogs. I'd argue that the moral thing to do is to protect the victim (your dog) from the aggressor.

Menno debating anyone on Veganism would be about 100 times rougher than Menno debating Trexler and Nuckols on P ratio, and that debate didn't go so well for Menno.

Really respect Menno and his insights on training. I was little bit sad however, seeing as how he is misinformed in the ethical and enviromental aspects of veganism. I suspect that Steve having his girlfriend being an active vegan probably have heard those arguments before and their correspondant rebuttals, so I give props to you for handling the issue with tact and respect.
@gilloasdfghjkl
@gilloasdfghjkl 3 жыл бұрын
How can you deduct that he is misinformed? He said there are good arguments for both sides and then proceeded to argue his personal viewpoint, as he was asked a personal question. I’m sure Menno can produce the studies to support his arguments. He doesn’t have a reputation of throwing statements out without scientific backing.

@@gilloasdfghjkl It is my fault because I didn´t properly specified which arguments and based on what I think he is misinformed, but basically in the case of ethics this video can elaborate better than I can what I'm refering to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWLZiGyfiNV_gs0 In the case of the enviromental effect of eating animal products this 2 part video is pretty good: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4PFeIN3qa6qns0 Both channels keep up to date with the latest science regarding veganism, and of course the philosophycal discussions regarding the ethics of animal products consumption

@@luciocastro1418 You still haven't specified on what base you think he is misinformed. We can easily send you to many videos stating anything and its opposite. What is YOUR argument against anything Menno said exactly?
@luciocastro1418
@luciocastro1418 3 жыл бұрын
@Chris Well I feel comfortable speaking only on the ethics side of his arguments, given that is what I'm most familiar with. What he said about, "If your main argument is we should all live in such a way not to put any strain on the environment" is not fair because that is not any real vegan activist argument. Sure is impossible to have absolutely zero impact on the environment, but sustainability comes not from having no impact, but rather, from striking a balance of impact, and the ecosystems own recovery abilities in order to achieve the most amount of longevity we can, whilst still having a good quality of life. Additionally, most ethical systems don't rely on the "Act towards others, as you would want others to act towards you" because (as curiously said by Kant whose categorical imperative Menno actually mentioned) is flawed in many ways, because we don't know how our values and interests differ from other people, and how they would like to be treated and is also insensitive to different situations in which people would like to have a different treatment that you. Instead, most ethical systems are based on reducing overall suffering, including your own. This is done by understanding situations carefully and the impact of our decisions on others and our society. Recognizing animals as sentient beings and own our increasing ability to produce food without the need to kill them, has brought the question, is the suffering from animals inflicted by humans, necessary? Also using animals' own behavior to dictate whether we should kill them or not, is also a fallacy. Animals rape and steal in their habitats all the time., does that mean we should rape, kill and steal each other as well? No, we use other methods of finding out what is a better approach to situations by analyzing actions and its consequences, so blindly following what's natural is not a recommendable strategy. He also speaks about insects and things that actively hunt on us. That is a different story, when there is a necessity, that is, if your life is in danger, nobody in their right mind would reprehend you for defending yourself, but this is unrelated to the cases where we CAN eat without the killing of animals.

I'm surprised Menno is able to have strong opinions on veganism, despite not being able to be specific about it. By "good production methods", and "very sustainable", does he mean regenerative agriculture? Unfortunately he doesn't explain it further. I'd be interested to hear why he thinks the environmental impact is "not that bad". If it is regenerative agriculture, then I suggest this critique of the approach should be watched. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYSkq2B3bLhrpdk This response also critiques the very little pro meat supporting research. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epywgIRvjZxpi7c His argument that the generic grouping "animals" don't have an issue killing you and eating you seems ridiculous to me. Are sheep herding Menno Henselmans somewhere, ready to sheer and kill them? Are cows? Are pigs? Are chickens? I agree that children do bare an environment cost, but is he suggesting that people shouldn't reproduce, and instead should spend that environmental impact on meat? It's a shame that a leader in evidence based training doesn't seem to have applied much effort into this aspect of his diet. I understand it may be hard for someone who flies around the world and consumes vast amounts of cultured dairy to challenge a core part of their lifestyle.

@zombiedude2319
@zombiedude2319 3 жыл бұрын
@@Anure99 Nope. But the people who eat meat aren’t the people who continuously preach about their ethical eating choices. It’s the vegans and vegetarians that do that, willfully blind to their own death toll.
@Anure99
@Anure99 3 жыл бұрын
@@zombiedude2319 First: You are strawmanning. No vegan or vegetarian is denying that animals are dying in the process of agriculture. Buts its not intentional and much less overall, and thats what counts. Second: My question was refering to the fact that life stock needs multiple the amount of plants to eat than if humans would consume the plants directly. So the death toll of insects and birds you attributed to plant based nutrition is much higher for a meat based nutrition. The enormous killing of the life stock just comes on top of that. Meaning when you only eat meat, you "kill" multiple times the amount of plants (and so insects, birds, etc. too) than someone who only eats plants. Just in addition to the cows, pigs and chickens. Because the lifestock has to be fed first, and they consume much more than humans. For 1 kg of red meat you need 4-9 kg of grain for example. The rain forest is burning to make room for animal food not because of vegans. Btw: I am not vegan. But as an honest an self critic individual, I know of course that what they do is more ethical (and ecological). I don't feel attacked by them but see them as a role model for a better future. Killing less is better than killing more. Can it even be a question? Addendum: I never met a missionary vegan in real life. Its an internet strawman. In real life, its always the meat eaters who question a persons veganism and preemtive start attacking/joking when a vegan sits at a table with them. Why is that?
