Can relate to James' experience during not training during Covid. There have been 3 times in my life where I was forced into a complete non-training hiatus of a month or more. All 3 instances resulted in hyper-gains (physique looking really crazy good) and new levels of strength. It wasn't only muscle memory, but crazy resensitization and repair. And this was all from 40 years old and on (I am 44 now, have been training for 23 years)

Good to know, that those times might be beneficial 👍. I probably won't do it on purpose soo, but if something forces me to quit training completely it won't bother me as much 😊

I can too sis. I had two children and both C-Sections. Abdominals were wrecked. The second pregnancy I had placenta previa so was put on complete rest for 7 months. Can back stronger than ever but I believe heavy lifting years before pregnancy helped. Muscle memory is awesome.

Hi, Paul Serafini here… 53:47: this is simply because of drugs. For a while now I’ve said maintenance phases are for maintenance doses. Why would we do our most volume, our hardest training, waste our highest level of dedication, and potentially expose ourselves to higher risk when we aren’t growing and we are on our lowest doses? On the other end of the spectrum naturals have to come up with some other reason why they’d purposely put themselves in a position to grow less. Which I’m sure there are plenty of reasons regarding injury mitigation or psychological benefit but I think we’d have a hard time supporting any direct benefit to putting yourself in a position to gain less for the sake of gaining more later.

The studies seem too heterogeneous to actually interpret meaningful results for advanced lifters. What works for a beginner/intermediate likely won't be nuanced enough to be meaningfully applied to an advanced lifter. As for deloads, i'd imagine a lot of is relief of psychological stress and muscle damage

The trainees in the study about resensitization blocks lost muscle in the 3 week detraining period, but regained faster, and did not have the same plateau at 6 months as the continuous training group. Also, there is research showing that a gene that codes for contractile proteins gets blocked and progressively deactivated over a period of about 6 weeks and that it gets unlblocked in about 10-20 days of detraining. SO their clearly is a mechanism that causes faster gain of muscle after detraining. It's also clear that it is muscle specific.

I have a question for mike: During a post cycle therapy, when does muscle loss/weight fluctuations stabilize, (does muscle loss still continue even if we are back in "normal" physiological hormonal enviroment and eucaloric state), so we can continue to program our nutrition according to body weight measurements?

Menno and his reactive deloads... don't fix something if it isn't broken? We fast forward to his chronic lower back issues .. hubris in podcast manifestation. I don't understand Menno sometimes. I think he likes to be contrarian to be contrarian but I wonder if he's since changed his stance on proactively reducing volume load intensity before letting injuries arise. Also waiting on his stance on carbs for hypertrophy to evolve lol.
@joeymoneymo
@joeymoneymo Жыл бұрын
A proactive deload wouldn't guarantee injury prevention either though. Not saying being proactive is useless either though. I think you could still plan deloads but then change plans as new things emerge (proactive and reactive or top down and bottoms up). His thoughts on carbs and their necessity for hypertrophy training seems to be in line with the research as far as I know.
@vicvin64
@vicvin64 Жыл бұрын
@@joeymoneymo makes sense deload plans with wiggle room. His stance hasn't changed despite his injuries and nagging issues. Heard a podcast recently where he simultaneously admits he's at his natty max and still trains TO FAILURE daily despite also mentioning maintenance volume is much lower than most people think. His stance on carbs isn't in line with physiology but perhaps in line with the bulk of the research on 18year old newbs to training for 8weeks. Carbs doesn't make a difference for them. Carbs makes a difference for ATP-PC regeneration via glycolyis. Glycogen usage is essential for repeated targetted muscle contractions under load. Glycogen repletion is needed at the intramyofibrillar area of type 2 fibres to resequester calcium for repeated intense muscle contractions. Basically once a lifter becomes intermediate to advanced and needs more volume to grow that's when carbs and the ability to oxidize carbs makes a difference. There's not much research on that other than Louise Burke showing carbs are better for anaerobic intensity in elite athletes. She found targeting keto doesn't help keto athletes because they're unable to oxidize carbs they're fat adapted not carb adapted.

At 6:02 Mike talks about the deep chemical response to hypertrophy that induces fatigue and may put a damper on gains. I would be fascinated to read more into this. Is it discussed in the RP hypertrophy book?

Mike is on so often, it's tricky to pinpoint one single thing he said :/ During primer phases you do want to focus on lower rep ranges than usual even if it's not strength training per se, and using the usual RIR scheme you'd follow through a normal meso! - Coach Jess
