10:08 nowdays fireflies are actually quite rare in Italy. They almost disappeared because of the pollution. Only in recent years they are going back and I'm so glad to see them in your video! I can remember, when I was a kid in the '90, the walks in the night with hundreds and hundreds of tiny lights! Me and my brothers used to play counting them.

Semola (Semolino) is flour from a different kind of wheat (Triticum Durum / Grano duro) Used mostly to do dry pasta because it has more glutin so it doesn't overcook so easily. OO or O flour is from grano tenero (Triticum Vulgare) and is used for all the other purposes. As far as bread goes, traditionally in the North of Italy we use the O kind that produces a very thin crust and the inside is white with almost invisible air bubbles. The hard kind used in the South produces a bread with a thick crust and pale yellow inside with big holes. This is a big generalization because there are thousands of regional kinds and variations all across Italy. The seeds are almost identical on the outside but you can distinguish them by crushing them. The hard one cracks in glassy shards; the soft one breaks "softly..." with a powdery inside that is almost ready to be transformed in flour. Ciao

Martijn please consider wearing some gloves when spreading the lime mixes with your hands, or use a pointing tool. You might not feel it now but lime is caustic, you don't want to be applying it to your skin or breathing it in. It chemically damages organic tissue. Loved this episode, it was nice seeing the troubleshooting 1st run of the crane, definitely foreshadows the difficulty of the roof -- very excited and anxious to see how you tackle it. But I know you will! Thank you for sharing this all with us, cheers!

Fantastic video Martijn. And Marius was a god-send for the task too. A well-deserved beer at the end. I love the cinematography on your videos and the timelapse sequence of the clouds when it seemed like a volcanic cloud just melted into the sky was superb. That and the time taken to show the mystery of the firefly. So varied in content but the star of the show was definitely - the crane! Well done. Some tweaking to be done for sure but great use of technology and physics!

Get a snatch block set, to increase the mechanical advantage, and the electric winch should work perfectly.
@ledfootlou2540
@ledfootlou2540 Жыл бұрын
I came here to say this. A snatch block which is just a pulley with a connection point could be connected to harness with the rock. Then run your cable over the pulley in the crane, through the pulley connected to the load and connect the end of the cable back onto the crane. It will double your lifting power. It will take twice as long to lift the load, but with an electric winch that is not much of a problem.

Great suggestion. I would also consider adding gearing with a chain or better yet, a worm gear. Your friend in the machinery shop would have fun designing something for you. Depends on what you easily have on hand. The other thing you could do is to extend the leaver arm of your manual lift. Considering how hard you had to work to move it manually, I am concerned that it is designed to lift such forces since you are getting to what a human can move. As an Engineer, I would design that winch to lift 5-10x what a human could drive it at but you could easily reach that level with a lever. I would double check before making a chance. Also, the reason that it is getting more difficult might be because as the wire wraps around the spool, the radius gets larger which reduces your mechanical advantage. All things considered, I would go back to the drawing board on this one since it could be very dangerous if you got it wrong.

Hi Martijn, here is my bread recipe if you want to try :-) 500g plain flour (can also be a mixture of 350g wheat and 150g rye) 3 pieces mashed boiled potatoes (medium size) 1 tablespoon of salt 1.5 tablespoons of cumin 1 teaspoon of fennel (or more if u want) 1/2 tablespoon vinegar 250 ml lukewarm water leaven: 20g of yeast and a little lukewarm water, sugar and flour Mix everything together -> leave to rise as you are used to -> before baking (raw dough) and immediately after baking, brush the whole loaf with salted water. Bake at around 230°C. Fennel and cumin make the bread fragrant and the potatoes dense. Have a nice day Andrew

Martijn I will start by telling you that my wife and I have watched all your video's on the Italian Alps. The first thing I'd like to share is that I have been a house builder and woodworker all my life and wanted to suggest that you explore one tool I came to late, the Japanese hand saw. There are many kinds you will do that sorting if this interests you. It cuts on the draw, is very sharp, and has a thin blade. Although I have all kinds of power and hand tools, this saw brings harmony and joy to me. Next, Helise and I talk a lot about how you make your films, the lack of un-verbalized instruction for a KZbin transition your work into art. Finally, we spoke at first a lot about who was the person with you filming, how many cameras you used if it was only you, and how you did the two thousand-foot shots of yourself and the car and trailer inside and out. I could go on. You focus on the simplicity of living, you're locating a place of beauty, and your willingness to figure out how to fully take care of your needs is filling a void in today's human psyche. I watch KZbin a lot to help me figure out other ways to do what I am working on, seldom do these videos feed my soul. But, you have, and we are waiting to see your next internal and external adventures. go well Larry Winters

Great to see the crane make another appearance. I never want it to end, yet I'd also love to see the moment when you finally get to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour. I'm sure the view certainly helps. Greetings from Aus 🇦🇺

I highly recommend that you rent a proper crane for the roof work. As logistically challenging as a crane rental may be, it is a far safer solution than using your wooden crane on a home-made wooden scaffold. So many things can go wrong and with massive weight at precarious height, things can go bad very quickly and someone could get seriously injured or even killed. Think about it and then think about again. Be safe and alive to film another day!

Hey Brian! I reckon he's ALREADY thought about it, and, considering that he actually DESIGNED the crane - maybe he thinks it will be safe! Because he DESIGNED it rather than making it up as he went along......?! What do you think..?!

Apparently be wouldn't be able to get a crane to the site given the accessibility. He had no choice but to design and make one himself or to hire a helicopter which was a very expensive option.

I'm actually quite worry that the wooden crane would snap. Lifting a 300kg load would means 600kg on the crane (load + counter weight), and that's more than half a ton.

Loving watching these Martijn! It makes me feel like I'm out there with you. I'm recovering from a stroke and videos like this are a real help to me. If you ever have to do a heavy lift again you might think about using a snatch block with a hook and run the end of the cable back up to the end of the crane, it'll move slower, but you'll get more lifting power from the winch.

Marius & you you were both very lucky not getting hurt handling this crane - you noticed that the winch mount had already cracked but continued working with the crane, Marius with his head next to the crane's head - not to think about if the winch mount would have failed... You have spent lots of effort in this crane but may be it is worth to rethink if this is the right tool for your project - stay safe

i feel like the sourdough making at night could have been a great add for Leffe. love that you talked to the bug and sent him on his way. i enjoyed marius' comment on the perspective about the difference in person vs. video in the elevation. and fun that you took the time to explain it. so did you like avocado when you tried it? did you have some guac when you were in the states or in central america? the raspberries looked divine. well done on moving the stone!

Love your videos Martin. Have your ever thought about a building a gin pole derrick for your roof project? I think its got a lot of pros over the current idea. You should be able to build it large enough so you only have to move it from one cabin to the next. The scaffolding will not have to support it. You will not have to mess with a dynamic counter weight. You will not have these heavy crane elements to man handle multiple times around the scaffold. Again, great videos! I try to watch one each evening before going to bed.

Hi Martijn, another Great Video! From assembling the crane so far up, for your arms to handle, to making sourdough bread & getting Fireflies...that we call Lightning Bugs in USA! Then arriving Marius from Germany on a bike trip, to help you in so many ways! Showing us the camera angles was so cool looking! Using lime instead of just cement for the stone legs & using the same purpose as decorating a cake was very interesting! Bread is done & looks good & yummy! Dinner for the 2 of you, was very nice & again looks good...but using a fork to stir on the frying pan will scratch it badly...use a plastic spatula! Start the tool wall & putting up the wood wall was nice, but wasn`t it better to do roof first then inside? Wow hoisting the table looked like hard work for both of you...but you both did great! Ending with all the work done, the 2 of you sitting back & enjoying a beer together...so relaxing!! Until next time have a great week & weekend! Stay safe & take care Love from Rantoul, Illinois USA
