Olive branches and the bankruptcy courts are in the building 😊 The liver birds were said to feed on the Liverpool marshes before Liverpool was constructed and they killed them off to make way for the city structure, but nothing could be built due to it being marshy ground so the superstitious people said it was because all the liver birds had gone, so they created 2 statues of them which the placed on the liver building so the buildings would hold fast and thats why they say if they ever leave the city will fall down 😊

Very informative - I learned a lot of new information about this marvelous building. When the Three Graces were cleaned up in the early 1970's, suddenly the three buildings really stood out. The difference was astounding. When I was in Primary School, I became friendly with a classmate whose father was a caretaker for one of the buildings, and whose family lived in an apartment right at the top of the building. I went there once. For the life of me, I cannot remember which building it was. I am 75% certain it was the Liver Building - but it could have been the Cunard Building. Heck, it was 60 years ago. If anyone could confirm which building had this apartment, I would be grateful to hear about it. I think his last name was Casson. Thanks.....Ian

That's fascinating. I've not heard about any caretaker's apartment in the Liver Builidng. It would be a very nice place to live! I remember the Port of Liverpool building in the early 70s and I was fascinated with it. I had never seen anything like it before. Up till then, practically all the buildings in LIverpool, Manchester and other cities, were covered in soot. The white stone looked like icing sugar. The Liver Building is a little bit darker, so the effect wasn't as strong as with the other two 'graces'. Many thanks for your comment.

Interesting to know about the bells, just like in Stevenage (St Georges Church) has a similar bell system to this one.
@AidanEyewitness2 жыл бұрын
I wasn't aware of that. To me the sound is not as full and clear as real bells, but I still like to hear the electronic bells very much! Thanks for the info!

My dad was a merchant seaman... Liverpool his home port. He always said the liver birds flap their wings every time a virgin walks past... scouse humour 🤷♀️😂

One looks out to sea and one looks towards the city. Legend has it the one looking out to sea is the female looking for her loved one to return safely the other is the male looking towards the city to see if the pubs open 😉👍
@AidanEyewitness3 жыл бұрын
@@magic1968 So the female looking out towards the sea has been wondering why no one is arriving into the port and the one looking towards the city has been wondering why all the pubs are closed!

Use to cycle to liverpool airport from my home in wavertree as a young teenager and watch the planes (for free!) at the location of your back drop in early 80s...can of pop crisps and bar of chocolate..happy memories ..

It's fascinating looking at old photos of the terraces on the old terminal buildings. The railings are so low and you are so close to the planes. I wasn't aware that there was no charge! I am using this view until I can take a flight from the new terminal and use the view onto the apron as my backdrop. Today you can walk around to the back of the old terminal, now a hotel, and take a close look at several old planes, including the shell of a Bristol Britannia, or at least it was there the last time I visited.

Surely the liver bird has a sprig of plantagenet (broom) in its beak?
@AidanEyewitness3 жыл бұрын
That could well be but it's also stated in many sources of information that the Liver Birds have a piece of laver seaweed in their beak - that's a pun on 'Liver'. Perhaps the original bird dating back to the 1200s had broom and later it changed to seaweed? Many thanks for your comment!

Yes, the three buildings on the Bund in Shanghai look remarkably similar to the ones in Liverpool, a very striking parallel between the two cities. I've never been to Shanghai but it would be very interesting to go - and to make a video about the parallels with Liverpool. Many thanks for your comment!

Thank you, Aidan, for the informative video. My great-grandfather, William Field, was instrumental in convincing the board of director to build the Liver Building and his name is on a placard on the building. I have been told that he gave a speech to convince the board and I would love to get a copy. One day I hope to travel with my family to take a tour of the building.
@AidanEyewitness Жыл бұрын
Wow that is fascinating and your great grandfather did the city a great service! The tour is fascinating but the time on the balcony at the too is too short. But it is a truly superb building and has a timeless appeal.
