Potential form +
if it were possible to
Expresses a desire or hope for something that is difficult to achieve.
If possible, I would like to go back to my university days.
If I could take a break, I would like to rest for about a month.
1. It is used to express a hope or expectation, such as "I would like to do X if it were possible," even if it is difficult to achieve. This sentence pattern conveys a desire or intention, assuming the difficult task were achievable, and highlights the speaker's wish to do it under those circumstances
→ If I could go back to my high school days, I would like to study more.
→ If I could forget that failure, I would forget it right away.
→ If I could become the company president, I would want to try it.
→ It’s painful to see my wife suffering from illness. If I could, I would take her place.
2. It can also be paired with phrases like "why don't you try X if you think you can?" to provoke or challenge someone in a way that might anger them.
Wife: "I'm leaving this house!"
Husband: "Oh! If you can leave, go ahead and try!"
Me: "I can easily take you down."
Friend: "Oh? If you can take me down, go ahead and try!"
Coworker: "Why don't you tell the manager you want to quit?"
Me: "If I could say it, I would, but I can't right now."
3. A casual way to say it is “〜もんなら”
If you can do it by tomorrow, go ahead and try.
If you can eat it, go ahead and try.
