28 WAY GLASS COATINGS TEST (HYDROPHOBICS) - Setup & Install - 1 YEAR IN THE MAKING!

You asked for it, I delivered! This test is well over a year in the making from the original "last call" video on my channel. and I listened to your suggestions, and pulled some strings to get access to some of the professional coatings that you wanted to see compared along with some of the cheapest options out there too!

We are breaking this test into two parts - first, this test, which will check long term hydrophobic longevity and the second part will test wiper resistance, and windshield washer fluid resistance (w/methanol based fluid).
This is the setup, prep, and install video of the first test.

I have used kamikaze intenso on my own vehicles and it lasts a solid 6 plus months in the Winter time in MN while I'm using splash red hot deicer every snowfall, I also have used glass parentheses coating and it's lasted over 2 years and still going strong with little maintenance. I also try to minimize any spray of a sealant or wax on the glass after coating.

First! 👍. For meguiar's glass sealant, there are 2 methods of applying meguiar's. One and apply a layer, after the appearance of a veil applied a second layer on top, then 10min after wiping with a warm tempered damp microfiber, then 1 hour after renewing. And frankly this method is much more hydrophobic and resistant!

It always puts a smile on my face when I see a new video from Scott. SO thorough, methodical, unbiased and backed up with excel sheets price/performance - basically everything one could hope to learn from all these tests. Anyway really looking forward to how things will unfold and what kind of performance we can expect. As someone who has a daily driven car and a lot of rain and winter conditions - I am a regular user of such products. Up until now, I tried Angelwax H2go, Rain X, Soft99 Glaco, and now I have ArtDeShine Graphene window coating. If you can please get the latter to your test also - I am really interested.

@@ScottHD I can tell you from personal experience - angel wax is crazy hydrophobic at expense of longevity - cca 2 months in my case. Soft 99 glaco lasted me 6 months before getting weak and is a bit less hydrophobic. I have artdeshine Graphene window coating - installed since February on a new car - still going strong. So I expect it will last somewhere like a year as advertised. It is however tougher to install - you have to be used to applying coatings as it really bites and bonds to the windshield.

I'm a glassparency installer and love the product, but that carpro fly by 30 sometimes lasts forever, before I got glassparency, I Installed it on my dads work truck.... 3 years ago. Still going strong. It outlived my ceramic pro coating on my car easily, time will tell how it performs against my glassparency coatings.

Hello Scott! Glad you liked the wipers suggestion! 😁😁 Now I see that you are using some coatings that have less claimed longevity than some others. For example, carpro Flyby30 is a 6 month coating. There is a Carpro FlybyForte that has a 2 year durability.

Scott is da man! Questions from a lazy noob. 1) Do you always polish windshields before applying sealant? 2) Could you comment on which sealants are relatively easier to apply? Finally, how the heck do I avoid the mess when using glass polish and rayon pads? I once polished after washing the car. LOL! Lesson learned.

Some of these products come with a "cleaner" (generally an isopropyl alcohol or ammonia based cleaner) to prep the glass to remove road grime, etc. On a client vehicle I will not usually polish the glass for something like this. Only doing it to make sure it is a 100% perfect surface to apply to. I plan on talking more about the installation of these products when I do the windshield washer/wiper test as the entire windshield will get covered in the product.

@@ScottHD true there are so many, I applied Soft99 Ultra Glaco 70 ml roll-on myself around Nov-2020, I live in Sweden and the weather is pretty harsh, also I use high concentrate wiper fluid. As of today the rain still gets completely blown of the windshield at 40 km driving speed.

I have just been using RainX washer fluid for years, it certainly beads up very well. Recently I ordered an Armor All product off Amazon and they sent the wrong product which turned out to be the new ceramic glass cleaner sealant. Customer service told me to keep the 2 cans and I didn't have to it return it. So I installed/used it last week, we will see how it does. Thanks for all the work you do I this channel!

Hey Scott, looking forward to this one. In regards to coating longevity I was thinking some of the harsher chemicals in windshield wiper fluids(bug removers) could affect windshield coatings but I'm not certain.

I'm going to do a trial run on this weekend on one or two products and see how it goes. Will try methanol based windshield washer fluid first, then another one with the bug dissolver which is typically very alkaline (which kill coatings quickly)

Absolutely! Taking it one step further and will end each test with purposely water spotting it with a high mineral content tap water.

i had good luck with glassparency and aquapel during my last windshield test. rain X is also underrated... with how cheap rain X is, you can apply it over and over and itll become permanent.. of course you have to keep applying it though.

Did you not use the Gyeon Cleanse? You showed it, noted that the product was a kit, showed the instructions for it, then appear to have skipped it and went right to the Repel component. From Gyeon: “Never skip the process with Q² Cleanse, which should be considered not only a cleaner but a bonding agent as well. Without the correct prep, Q² Repel will never reach its expected durability.”

Haha. I know! I brought it on myself trying to start 4 tests all in the same month. Here it is 130am and I'm just finishing up the Chinese only ceramic coatings one (application). 3 out of 4 isn't bad, but the second part of this glass coatings test is going to be a monster!

I used csl light in windows. The steep 120 degree angle creates droplets like marbles. Exo is bad on the windshield.

I don’t know how you could work it in but I would be curious to see how these would react to repeated use of a mineral spot remover. I use Carpro Spotless monthly. Looking forward to the test. I personally use Griots Glass sealant and maintain with the Armor All Ceramic.

Scott, awesome job as usual. Did you notice if any of these "coatings" were similar in terms of smell or color. For example rain-x, griots garage, and a few other clear products all look the same. Just wondering if they're all coming from the same blender at different price points

I'm going to touch on that in the other part. I would say 75% of them smell like isopropyl alcohol. The others are quite pungent.

Isopropyl alcohol is a drying agent. So I really can't smell the other chemicals in it.

Griot's at least manufacturers all chemical products in-house with the exception of their own-branded Cerakote headlight restoration kit. It's likely many manufacturers arrive at similar solutions simply because those are the ingredients and characteristics that work, just like there are only so many ingredients you can choose from to bake chocolate chip cookies. You can vary the brands and quality of the ingredients and their ratios, but at the end of it you still have more or less the same kinds of ingredients going into the dough.

Hey.... can you split the control in half and maybe apply your favorite (non-professional only) ceramic coat that's made for the paint? Just to see if it would work on glass the same way. ( I have used c quartz UK on my window before.. No visibility issues and lasted for many months) btw if you apply a black vinyl that has no air release on the back of the glass it would look better. ( oracal 651 or similar)

I will do that! Won't happen until this weekend but should be enough time for a coating to cure. Vinyl isn't our forté so we just used several scraps we had laying around the shop between what we use for chrome deletes and other for doing signs etc

So strange the coatings you have used in the past don't last... I have been using McKee's 37 Glass coating for the last 3 years and it last a little bit over a year on my personal vehicle that sits outside 24/7 all year. And I live in Canada so we have pretty nasty winters and a lot of rain too. I don't drive that much in the rain, so that helps with the very limited wiper action.

I am guessing it has a lot to do with our washer fluid here - it is highly alkaline for the intense amount of bugs we get here. (the "bug" washer fluid anyway... the standard stuff is primarily isopropyl alcohol and water here - only good to 32ºF (0ºC). I purchased a lot of methanol based washer fluid when I went on vacation to Colorado this past summer that I plan on using for the wiper test (after water-only is tested with the wipers)

Maybe this test will change my mind about glass coatings. My experience is that they just aren’t worth the cost. Glass is easy to keep clean and can be done independently from washing the car. I always just recommend that people use something like Stoner glass cleaner, and NEVER use gas station windshield cleaner.

I use ....Aquapel. I can't seem to get it for less than $5 each, which turns out to be kind of expensive, since you'll need three for the whole car. But the front windshield holds up for a good 6 months. It makes driving fast on the highway in rain much better.
