Urban rescue ranch made a whole thing about his rhea constantly attacking him and making him bleed. His channel blew up because people were watching him get mauled by his pet. I think it's important that you show what it's really like living with them.

I have a pet duck who I ended up with against my will. Ducks, like geese, will try to bite you. Ducks also have tendencies to harass dogs. They do not make good pets, I always tell people not to get ducks. Ducks are smart but you cannot UNtrain a duck. Once they learn a behavior, it’s likely going to become a permanent part of their routine.

Leaving more of the bites (or attempted bites) in from now on seems like a good idea! It shows the everyday reality of owning and interacting with toucans, namely that even though they’re lovely, they’re still lovely assholes. You do a great job already with advocating that people not get pet toucans, but actually seeing how even with human friendly toucans bites are a constant hazard, it speaks louder then words as a warning.

So basically, they are forever watching for weakness, lurking in the branches like little velociraptors XD Still love them. From a distance. Does this mean that Toupac and Ripley were exceptions, or was it because of age or toucan species? ..Or select filming of moments when they were on their best behaviors? XD

Also you cany be afraid of being hurt, I have a pair of curlcrests and they can get out of hand. My male tried to take an eye last spring and curls are cute and cuddlie compared to the big toucans.

Very interesting. My African Grey parrot would bite me hard intentionally and look me into the eyes afterward making sure I got the message. He would bite for a reason when I did something wrong, that he did not like- for example being taken back into his cage when did not want to, etc. I got him to stop by pretending to cry as if badly hurt, and looking at him while pretending to cry and showing him the part of my body that he bit, usually a finger. I would do this for a whole minute or so! It worked because while he was biting me purposefully he did not want to hurt me seriously. With a Toucan, if as you say they are bullies by nature, this approach would not work. I wonder though. Nice video, thanks.

A great demonstration with toucans and how the only reason you should ever take any in is if: you're capable of giving the real care and space for them to thrive, able to give part of your life to, and most importantly - are insane enough. ;) These aren't tiny dogs you can pamper and put in a purse. Not these chaotic dinosaurs.

I know there are a lot of differences between toucans and parrots, but parrots will guard resources too and attack you when you try to feed them. What worked for me was getting a different cage for my parrot to sleep in and then I can clean his big cage and get his food and water all set up before I get him up for the day. Otherwise I was getting bit every time I put my hand in the cage, even to bring him food! And you deserve a lot of respect for rescuing these birds and giving them the best life possible!!

From an evolutionary perspective, I guess this aggression is meant to keep everything in the jungle away from them. They could be very vulnerable, but if bigger predators learn that toucans are huge assholes not worth messing with, the toucan is safer as a species.

@tobiaswichert4843
@tobiaswichert4843 10 ай бұрын
Naturally agressive yes, in a way. The social structure, behavior in their flocks is kinda similar to the Klingon society. Toucans do spend much time with non-serious fights, like sparring, with each other.
@2CANTV
@2CANTV 10 ай бұрын
They're just general bullies even to their own species. Like the poster said before me, they spend a lot of time fencing with their flock mates as a social behavior. But they also tend to dominate and bully any other animal in the vicinity- especially other birds. We perhaps don't notice because we're so familiar with seeing them now... But can you imagine being another bird or animal and a bird with that kind of beak comes at you? Even though it's not as comparatively strong as a parrots may be, they rely on intimidation and confidence when approaching other animals. My best guess is that they consider me as part of the flock and they interpret biting me as a playful challenge...the problem is I don't have a tough beak to meet them at their level. They typically go after my hands because I suspect that's what they equate to my "beak", being what I use to manipulate objects like they do with theirs.

I pretty regularly feed eels (specifically NZ long fin eels) and I'd feel more comfortable sticking my hands in front of a carnivorous eel (they do have teeth, many people claim they don't, they do. They are very short, very sharp teeth) than a toucan. The bites are almost all accidental. The worst I had was one biting my thumb after mistaking it for a piece of sausage, but it let go after a second or so.

All those "cute animal videos" accounts are doing a huge disservice. I know that a lot of people just want to see something cute for 3 sec and forget about it, but at least half will get their mind made with them wanting to get a pet thinking they're only gonna get the good and cute stuff.

These are not domesticated pet birds. They should be kept in large planted aviaries like in this video. People guy them as they look cute and its a new thing, but they are being selfish and its cruel to the birds. Nearly all of them are taken from the nest for hand rearing. This imprints them onto humans, and leads to a lot of the aggressive and sexual behaviour problems...because they think they are humans. If they were left with their parents to wean and and then adopted they would make better pets as they would have some fear of humans and not want to mate or fight with us. This is the same with parrots that are hand reared. It should be illegal to do this as it creates so many behavioural problems and unhappy birds when they reach sexual maturity.

ya shouldn't edit out the biting really the term "pet" shouldn't be applied to non-domesticated species at all people think they can get a toucan or tiger or whatever and it'll be a "pet" but it won't... it'll be "tamed" but even if you care for it from birth it'll never be "domesticated" it'll always have the instincts of a wild animal leads to so many sad situations and suffering creates an industry based around selling animals that will never be pets to people who are naïve or just want one because they like the idea in this sense there's no difference between a cobra, alligator, or a toucan just toucans look cute, but they're just as wild as a cobra want an exotic pet? get a hedgehog, or a ferret, or llama or something. otherwise you need a zoo exhibit in your home

We live in a world where logic has taken over people's common sense. Call it a "pet" and it must be a pet even if its a poisonous snake. I, having owned a parrot, an African Grey, for 26 years, have concluded that larger parrots should not be kept as pets. They are highly social and incredibly smart but not domesticated and should not be kept in cages in households. If I could do it again I would buy a little budgie or pair of lovebirds. I have an incredible bond with my bird, he has been hand raised by me from six weeks but he is independent thinking and treats me like an equal and expects me to treat him as equal which most of the time cannot be as I have to govern his life. I try to make up with love and bribes and it works most of the time, but that is the nature of the relationship.

@@sezwo5774 relatable like i'm watching this because i love the animals Greys are awesome, fascinating how smart they are sounds like your grey is lucky, you seem to have an enlightened perspective on the reality of the bird and your relationship

Cute little a**holes. When you mention birds regurgitating I think of Tupac trying to "feed" you.

Maybe shes like a Dog and you just have to show her youre above her. Maybe hold her beak shut or you need to lay her down to show dominance so youre the flock leader

So if all they do is bite you and offer absolutely zero affection why even have them? There's nothing you get back from them, there's no bond and all they do is bite you. Get rid of them. You're spending all your time, money and energy just to have a bunch of birds bite you. What do you get back from all the care you give them? You'd be an absolute moron to keep taking care of these birds just to get absolutely nothing back
