I think the reason people like 2D is because they have an Idea of how this character would be a perfect partner who would agree/do/say whatever they want. They have 100% control and no conflict in this imaginary relationship. They can't handle the effort a real relationship needs to cultivate or being possibly rejected Edit: I wanted to add to this after reflecting on it a bit. Some people in the comments are suggesting this is a sign of potential abusers which at first glance seems fitting. However, after thinking about it for a bit, this may just as likely be a sign of a potential victim of an abuser. If what I say holds true and the people who have 2d waifus/husbandus are avoiding conflict in a controlled imaginary relationship, would they have the strength to stand up for themselves in an actual one where the partner gaslights, verbally abuses and belittles them? Just some more food for thought. Imma take this from a more artistic and psychological perspective (I’m not a professional psychologist so don’t take this too seriously). Anime drawings are meant to be aesthetically pleasing, and in most cases attractive. When creating a character you mainly do one thing, take the human body and simply it. Exaggerate the most ideal features, cut out the rest. I know that when I draw, I don’t nearly put as much detail into the mouth as I do the eyes. The cutting out of these features leads to what could be perceived in a sense as “perfect”. It’s a human technically speaking, but it doesn’t have imperfections. Every blemish, spot of discoloration, split end, eye bag, and strand of body hair has been stripped clean. It is made to be as pleasing as possible, which clearly it succeeds at. And then comes the appeal of the impossible. Unnatural hair and eye colors, comically large breasts, impossible portions, that little skirt that somehow despite being the most impractical thing ever, breaks the laws of physics and never flashes anyone (well maybe it does depending on the show idk) all appeals to humanity’s interest in what cannot be. And then comes the sadder part, many of the people who think these things are extremely lonely. They clearly want some form of connection, but they don’t want to go after it themselves. So they do the next best thing, obsess over an illustration. For an illustration cannot reject you, and since it’s not a real person, you can project any personality trait and reaction you want onto them. Why have to deal with someone else with conflicting interests when you can just have someone that you literally can only imagine what they might say? And at the end of the day, that’s not a healthy mindset. Liking illustrated characters isn’t inherently bad, hell I’ve had tons of crushes on anime and cartoon characters. But the difference between me and the people in the video is that I know and have fully accepted that my “crush” is simply the result of pen and ink. They are just the thoughts of some writer/mangaka. Having a waifu or husbando isn’t bad, it’s just not healthy see that fictional character are anything more then fictional. So if you’re going to take anything from this, take this: It’s fine to have crushes on fictional characters as long as you acknowledge and accept that they aren’t real. Off topic but the think the Gravity Fall’s episode “Soos and the Real Girl” show the point of this video and my comment really well. Edit: Hadn’t gotten to the lolicon section. Not just loneliness, if can fuck with your mental health and perspective on the world. Can lead to terrible actions or views. A lolicon who truly believes “age is just a number” for example. Like tbh tho I don't really mind that aspect of the anime fan base cuz I do get how they got there rather than the fact that they are really. Speaking as a dude that had his first love be a visual novel character I get it cuz alot of these types usually don't have any luck when it comes to women or are just social outcasts and the waifu is tied to a feeling of acceptance in any form brought on from a fondness of the show they're from so they treat the 2D as "better" and honestly it's not really easy to just hop right outta that typa mindset cuz you're making the decision to give up what little relationship you have with someone, fiction or otherwise, for something that likely will not lead to any luck in the dating game. It's a whole journey of self love and personal growth so rather than it being sad I'd rather try to help the guy out by talking or going out on the weekend maybe talk to a stranger online or something. The guy just needs a pick-me-upper rather than being treated like the plague. Again from personal experience that tends to make people just got defensive and angrier. Idk
