Hey all! This is something I have wanted to do for a while. In this video I am sculpting a stylized character in ZBrush based off of the concept of Chris Ables' troll - www.artstation.com/artwork/58... . Then I am taking that character sculpt and transforming it into a more realistic version of a troll. I wasn't sure how useful the base mesh of the stylized character would be for this challenge, but it ended up being surprisingly helpful! Let me know which version of the character you liked more. Personally I liked the stylized character more, but I'm a little biased ;) . Like I said, this was a ton of fun to do and if you guys have any other ideas for cool challenges or characters you would like to see me sculpt please share them in the comments. Hope you guys have a great day, and see you in the next one ❤️

One of the greatness of an artist teacher, is to demonstrate how simple may be to achieve difficult results. You are one of them. Thanks Follygon for all the love and simplicity you put in these tutorials!

Honestly, I love them both. They each have their own unique traits, but tie into each other and still look like the same character. Almost as if the stylized version, ran through a portal that lead it to our world. :) you do an amazing job on all of your sculpts, not only that but you inspired me, a normally lazy 19 year old, to give sculpting a try! I did and I was ultra happy with the result. Thank you for showing your process!

As an experienced Sculptor, what are you thoughts on the current state of sculpting in Blender? If you're new to Sculpting all together, do you think its worth starting in Blender in hopes the toolset catches up to zBrush?
@Follygon
@Follygon 4 жыл бұрын
It's nowhere near ZBrush right now. Maybe one day though! I'm not one for software loyalty so I'll use whatever tool is best for the job. If something comes out that is better, I would happily switch. If you are new to sculpting, I see no reason not to start out with a free tool to see if you even like sculpting to begin with :)

So, Zbrush fibermesh transfers pretty accurately to Blender particle hair? I've read you transfer it as curves. This is short cropped hair - does it work with long hair ( like does it keep the style?) I much rather style fibermesh hair in Zbrush but much rather render particle hair in Blender.

Yo Follygon! I love the video and definitely want to see more stylized to realism videos, because I really enjoyed this one. That being said, If you don't mind I'd like to give you some unrequested feedback & constructive criticism. Firstly, my biggest issue is that I feel like you weren't exactly true to the original design with your realistic interpretation. Your realistic version, to me, looks more like a character inspired by the original, not just a more anatomically believable version. The hair is the biggest offender imo, the cornrows were definitely a defining feature of the character for me, and to remove them really changes the whole feel of the character. The beard, while not as important, could've been kept closer to the original design to match the concept and stylized version better. Another issue I have is that you added a lot of 'bumpiness' to the character, which in some areas helps add a realistic feel, but in other areas, like the nose and the cheeks, I feel like you may have gone a little overboard with detailing, straying from the concept a little too far. The eyes are another glaring (hehe) issue I see (hehe). I think you could've left the sclera mostly white without sacrificing any realism, but staying truer to the original design. I would've also liked to see the neck made a little smaller in the realistic version, not human small or anything, just a little smaller would've helped sell it to me as something I could maybe run into out in some cave or something. As for the stylized version, the only thing I'd want to change is: I think you could've pushed the jaw and chin a little more, as I don't think they look as broad as the original art. I would also have liked it if the beard hairs could've more stylized looking. I'm not super familiar with ZBrush though so I don't know if that's feasible or not with the tool you used. I hope this didn't come off as uppity, overly negative or anything like that, I really enjoyed this video and the models you made, and want to see more like it, I just want future videos and models to be the best they can be and I hope that any of this feedback is useful. If you read all of this, thank you for your time! Cheers!

A teal Tiefling warlock pirate. He has golden/yellow eyes and black quiff hair. He has two sets of horns, the first sweep back and then come forward to frame his face, and the other smaller/shorter set curls around the first set of horns. He has a watch crafted by an artificer, and his cutlass was given to him by his patron, the goddess of the sea. He’s roughly 23 years old, about 5’8” and weighs ~168lbs. He wears a black Trenchcoat that has is speckled with white dots starting at halfway down the thigh, as it goes further down, the Trenchcoat starts to turn more and more white until halfway down the shins were it is entirely white. Edit: if you want a backstory/more info, I have made this character entirely and am willing to flesh it out more.
