A history trivia piece about this stretch of I-10: This section runs right thru an area joined to the USA by the GADSDEN PURCHASE. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marked the end of the Mexican-American war of the mid 1800s. The USA won what is now California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (yes at one time Mexican territory extended up to the Oregon/Idaho/Wyoming border!), however the territory won, southern border was at the Gila River. The Gadsden Purchase, the southern parts of New Mexico and Arizona, was bought from Mexico (Mexico needed the money, a LOT of money) at the behest of the Railroad company because they needed a flat, relatively low elevation crossing of the Continental Divide. I-10 is right next to the railroad. In fact driving on I-10, you cross the divide at mile 52 (in New Mexico) and if there was not sign posted indicating the Continental Divide, you would have no idea you crossed it (between Lordsburg and Deming), it is THAT flat and straight. The price the USA paid for the Gadsden Purchase well exceeded the entire price the USA paid for the entire Louisiana Purchase!!

Thx very much for this trip! I went West on I-10, a little over 18 years ago, moving to Calif. I also had a Hi-8 Sony camcorder in my moving truck, shooting some hand-held footage. Remember the scenic Texas Canyon rest area. Gotta say ... for the rest stops, the Govt. always picks nice areas to take a leak ;)

Wow, I haven't been on this section of I-10 in what feels like 2 million years. Memories are flooding back now. For instance, back when I was haulin' 53 foot trailers all over everywhere, another truck right in front of me blew a tire and about gave me a coronary. Sounded like a bomb going off. But what I remember the most is that I never did stop to find out what "The Thing" was. To this very day, I still don't know! 🤣

@@InterstateKyle Yes, by all means (I couldn't believe that you blew right past it without a single comment in the video). But as per a gentlemen's agreement going back at least to the 1960s, you shouldn't reveal what it is. The visitor center there, though, has a history of its own. Now managed by Bowlin's (complete with embedded Dairy Queen), back in the day I believe it was run by Stuckey's.

That brings back memories. In addition to living in Phoenix, I also lived in Huachuca City, which is 60 miles from Tucson. I used to drive this stretch of I-10 E to SR-90 S. Your channel has documented all of the roads I drove in Phoenix and in Tucson.

Wise decision to let the camera run. Very pretty scenery. & yeah, ADOT does things in regards to their highways that the rest of the states don't do. It looks like it was getting cloudy & a possible storm was brewing (it's June when you filmed this- & it's monsoon season around that time). & now it's back to "the Land of Enchantment!"

I-10's highest point overall is, as you stated, in this video, and not even 5000 feet. This is why the Gadsden Purchase happened.

Great video. I drive this route every summer from LA to Houston, 2 and a half days of driving. I finish first day in Benson, there is a very good Motel-6 at exit 302 (exit to Ft Huachuca) and a huge Love's Truck Stop. I stay at the Motel-6, it is managed by "Gary", really great person and this Motel-6 is a 3-story building that is more like a HOTEL. Rooms very reasonably priced.

Good one as usual. ADOT does things their way, it seems. Just as with I-10 EB having El Paso, I-40 WB from Flagstaff on to the CA line has Los Angeles as the control city, probably because that was where old Route 66 was headed, even though 40 ends in Barstow.

The music fits the scenery extremely well. The beginning of the story in "The Seashores of Old Mexico" reminds me of the beginning of the story in "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. Of course, the story in "The Seashores of Old Mexico" has a MUCH happier ending for the protagonist. For some reason that I cannot explain, something about the music of Al Stewart just seems to go with drivelapse videos in remote deserts.

TX should have used Tucson as the control city on route 10 west from El Paso.

The Arizona part of the route between Tucson and El Paso I think is a lot prettier than the New Mexico part. Idk why, but coming home from El Paso, the moment I enter Arizona, I feel like I'm in a much better place. The scenery is just prettier in Arizona than in Southern New Mexico. I like Arizona as a whole better.

I've made the Tucson to Texas (Gulf Coast) trip about 40 times over the last 12 years and completely agree with you. When crossing the border back into Arizona, it can be a pretty strong emotional feeling that overcomes you. I've lived most of my life in Southern Arizona but recently moved down to the coast to spend a few years by the water. I will return to Arizona one day, permanently. For all the times that I've heard people say, about the desert, "there's nothing here ...it's just dry and brown and hot", they have no idea how beautiful the desert can be. That distinct aroma of creosote bushes when there's a little humidity in the air, or right after a Monsoon - that's good stuff. I love the deafening sound of silence while standing in the Summer desert at sunset, just before the creatures come out to wander around, feeling waves of cool, dry air, flow past.
