well it doesn't look that good up close, that's part of the answer, but the other is "the cloud"

Yeah the textures and foliage don't look good, and the landscapes are very basic. But it is rendering tons of data at once, and the lighting and clouds look insanely realistic, you're also not supposed to look too close in this type of game, so it doesn't matter too much. Maybe the next Flight Simulator MS releases will look almost exactly like real life. The next generation is gonna be crazy

@@MrZodiac011 i didnt say it was bad or matter, just explained. For example a game like gta or whatever, also with big map (but tiny in comparasion to msfs) have lots of detail and looks 100x better up close.

This kind of realism has actually been possible for the last 2-3 generations of computer hardware. However, almost every game dev studio prioritises other things and usually ignores the simulation aspect that can bring realism to a game world, so yeah its always nice when a studio prioritises the simulation as well.

2:33 I actually did this to show some friends how the moon looked in Jamaica while I was there. They didn't believe me that the crest of the moon makes a U shape rather than a C shape so I went back in time to 2013 to when I was there and sure enough it was exactly in the sky where I expected it to be and looked how I expected it to be. That was pretty cool to see first hand.

This video made me realize again how much i love your range of interests and your devotion to them. The way you can get completely interested in small parts of games that many people play rather mindlessly is amazing. Talking about virtual clouds, and comparisons from the game to the real world. Talking about both current- old and future technology, both in Hardware and Software. You are the rare kind of person that i could see talking to for hours just listening, because you have a way of making the smallest and least-important seeming topics absolutely mesmerizing. Meteorologist here. Well done talking about the different elements and effects of humidity and wind. Bonus for mentioning the crepuscular rays (rays of sunlight)! I would recommend looking up the actual weather from a local observation point and seeing if that helps your recreation. Look up historical records or METAR (all caps) archives. You would have to decode the METAR but there are sites for that. Also would like to see if you can make a rainbow with the sun at your back at less than 42 degree elevation (key) and rain in-front of you. Good luck and thanks for showing me the weather side of flight sim.

the other thing that people often overlook with photorealism is the "photo" part. simulate lights and fog and clouds all you want, but until you get the behavior of an actual camera down, it'll still have tells. depth of field, aperture, lens flare, stuff like that that im not smart enough to really describe properly.

Great video - I’ve been a huge fan of MSFS 2020 since September 2020 and I still marvel at the depth of its physical modeling, including clouds, humidity, wind, and more. As an optical engineer, I’m also impressed with how well lighting is simulated at all levels including atmospheric. It’s easy to make your own weather but even easier with utilities like Weather Preset Pro that adds dozens of amazing presets to the built in ones. The astronomy is accurate too. You can even see solar eclipses if you get the date, time, and position right.

Mr Philip, if you have a look through different FS2020 mods you'd come across one that replaces Bing-maps image data with Google-maps image data instead. This does provide higher resolution images and with much better contrast, however some models dont quite match up completely.

I noticed in one of my many hundred+ hours of exploring RDR2, when it rains, the ground is insanely shiny when the sun hits it just right. Preposterous, I thought. Then, days later at the market I saw how wet the ground was, and in the evening as we left, how shiny the ground really could be when hit by sunlight, blinding even! Virtual worlds have made me focus hyper attentively at the world around me, and made me appreciate it's subtler beauties.

As a scientist, I feel like I can relate to the last parts of this video (and a lot of others if I'm being honest lol). I believe you don't need the confirmation that what you're doing is not against or somehow depreciating the natural beauty but ensuring that a much larger population could have access to it. Should you be enjoying all the beautiful things that you come across? sure. But who says that there's a particular way of enjoying things? Our life experiences play a very important role in how we appreciate things. I can't say that I'd enjoy a hiking trip the same way a geologist or a botanist would. I love watching 2kliks and kliks videos because it almost feels like sitting through a colloquium where you go over questions you asked, results you found etc. or some philosophical discussion and it helps me get a new perspective to look at things. Oops. Typed out a KZbin comment like a personal message. It's too late now. gg.

As a casual sim fan i would fly around in this game with clear weather because there's no way i'd be able to find a runway unless i could see it, but i knew i was doing myself a disservice because as good as the ground looks... i didn't have any clouds, there's no way i could use live weather and see all the variety it could offer in case i couldn't land. I'd played around with weather settings before because the clouds are so beautiful but any time i was actually flying i turned them off, so over the last few days i've been teaching myself how to land in any weather using ILS and it's opened up a whole new world to me, landing on grass strips is still dependant on weather and it's fun to slip through gaps in the cloud to make a landing, but now whenever it's cloudy and raining outside i know i won't be hindered by using live weather :D, but most importantly, clouds.

8:15 To add onto that, category 5 hurricane Michael hit Panama City Beach, FL in 2018. It leveled huge portions of the city. I had to visit that city for work roughly a week after the hurricane and the city was full of tractors, construction equipment, road crews and power crews working around the clock and sleeping in their trucks. Most homes were destroyed, most businesses were destroyed. Locals had all moved away since they didn't have a place to sleep or a place to work. 4 years later that city is still being rebuilt.

I really hope one day they'll be able to add tornadic stormclouds into it, showing off the might of mother nature as you can watch the mesocyclone slowly rotate underneath an overshooting top of whispy clouds at 30.000 or so stretching for miles across and watch the thick and ominous wallclouds at the bottom throwing massive downpours of hail and rain combined with violent winds and perhaps a tornado as well, but I fear it probably will never be implemented properly because of the sheer complexity of such a cloud formation

A lot of airports will spit out the cloud heights in a coded format. It’s part of an hourly report called a METAR used for aviation-related weather decision making. They spit out a cloud condition report that’s stylized like this: FEW280 SCT150 BKN045 OVC006 FEW represents few clouds (1/8 to 2/8 sky coverage) SCT represents scattered (3/8 to 5/8 coverage) BKN represents a broken ceiling (6/8 to 7/8 coverage) OVC represents an overcast layer (8/8 coverage) If there’s no clouds, you may see CLR or SKC. The caveat is that some stations only report clouds below a certain height. The number after the layer type is how high the clouds are above ground level (AGL) in hundreds of feet. So, 280 is 28,000ft AGL, 150 is 15,000ft AGL, 045 is 4500ft AGL, and 006 is 600ft AGL.

I have used FS to plot real photographs - where exactly the moon will rise, where it cross over, pass a skyscraper in various cities. Sunsets, etc. Google Earth is good for Sunsets/sunrises also, but I feel I have more control in FS with zoom features. There is a popular photo app for this (photopills, and others), but why pay for these apps...usually monthly when I have what I need here. The realism still blows my mind after all this time.

Imagine the large landscape of MFS with its weather system combined with the toolbox that is Arma which allows for gameplay in a real environment with cars and beautiful roads. In Switzerland we have free access to all elevation data, sat map, street vector files, shapefiles of all the buildings and their shapes, rivers, lakes, where the forests are located and even where single bushes and trees are standing. I really crave a game engine that could handle this. The enfusion engine is not there yet and I'm not sure it will ever support such large maps. UE5 now supports massive maps but implementing all the geo-functionality is way to complicated for me. With world streaming like in MFS to enable large multiplayer servers this is my dream of a "drive around for fun" - game. Or a flight sim or a truck sim or a fight sim or what ever one likes.

Microsoft flight simulator is realistic but it's not quite finished it feels. It feels like the lightning needs some tweaks and the colours need some adjustment. Often the sim feels darker and less sunny than real life even in the same weather, the ground just appears too dull. The sim also doesn't have good saturation on buildings. Buildings look like dark grey post apocalyptic towers more than anything especially in New York and places like that. The trees could do with being lighter and more round shaped. The buildings could do with being a bit less textured (often they are overteztured with lots of dirt and mud) and they could do with having slightly different parameter values, they just don't look that realistic often. The sky also, is rarely the right colour. It always feels too dull or too green or too haazy. I've compared it to real life and it's always a bit out of colour.

You can fill it with all the 3D scan data you can get your hands on :P By default it is just some SRTM data.

I can see how they can improve the current version of the simulator but I can't imagine what will be missing with the next iteration. It's that insanely close to reality.

I'm still waiting for MS to use the topography information and build a GTA type game from a REAL US city. With Flight Sim already simulating the land layout, they could go in and add all the hi texture buildings and interiors. Then use Forza tech for all the cars. Over time add another major city near by that you can drive too. So much potential here.
