I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for these older Spinfishers. Lots of fine memories using these back in the good old days. Guess my age is starting to show the more I think about it. So easy to maintain these old reliable, durable workhorses. Thanks Dennis.

Nostalgia is about the people, places and things from our formative years. So naturally I love the reels from the sixties and seventies. The technology had advanced so those reels can perform with today's products. Plus, they are still going strong after fifty or sixty yesrs.

Another great video featuring one of my favorites. I'm currently building a 722 greenie from parts purchased on eBay. Thanks for your help.

Hi Dennis Old Penn spinning reels are very rare in Canada. I have never seen one. Still one off my favorite brands.

They are well made. I am unsure of the Canadian distribution the Penn had and why they are scarce. This one is hard to find here as well - A lot of the Penn culture was around Saltwater reels and freshwater ones were less prominent, almost like an afterthought. That continues today. Penn has done a few low profile bait casters then discontinued them and now the just introduced one. - Dennis

I have this reel that I did a complete restoration for about 2 years ago. I put a beautiful Gomexus power knob on mine because the original handle knob was cracked. I think this reel is an excellent light freshwater reel. I also think it is one of the most beautiful reels Penn ever made in its size and class. I am almost positive that my reel has a ball bearing rather than a bushing. I’ll have to check this. Well I checked and I have two problems understanding this reel. Mine does indeed have a ball bearing and mine also has a gold spool rather than a silver one. Now I have a Penn 720 greenies that has a silver spool so I’m confused and guess what - the greenies has a bushing with no bearing. I guess there could be different models of this reel so I’ll need to do some research. Great video on a super little reel! - Chris

Great video, thank you. I am servicing my reel for the first time (other than occasional oil) since new in 1987 because the crosswind block broke into 3 pieces. I am curious if you would elaborate a bit more on the drag mechanism and when you replace the teflon washers over simply cleaning. My metal washers had some reasonable corrosion which I was able to remove with the abrasiveness of a paper towel, fingernail pressure, and some time, but the area is more “dirty” than this example reel in your video.

You do not need to do anything with the plastic washers unless they torn or scarred. These reels are light reels and do not require a lot of drag. You can replace them if needed. A good source for Penn parts is Mysticparts.com - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Wish I watched this video before I tried to service one of these for my Dad. I broke the plastic crosswind block not realizing the order of disassembly 😖. Luckily I was able to find a replacement on eBay. I’ve been thinking about machining a crosswind block out of aluminum, which seems like it would be a much better and longer lasting part. Is there any source for an upgraded crosswind block for these? Anything seems better than black plastic. Nice job putting this reel back in order, they are well made an attractive reels overall.

I am not aware of an upgrade like the one you are searching of. I haven't seen that failure and most times an upgrade won't be made unless it is a chronic problem. I think a metal block may cause noise as it rubs against the main gear. I would just replace the block. It is unusual that yours broke and it probably will not happen again - Dennis
