Look, there's so many good songs for them to listen to. But I started with a realistic list for them to work through, some of my favorites. If we're ganna add songs Vicarious is an obvious choice. Right in Two, 46 and 2, Aenema, Eulogy, The Pot, and many more titles should be added to this list. Let them slowly go down the rabbit hole. I think we can all agree that the four in the list is a good place to start. Honestly Parabol/Parabola is one song to me, if you even try to split them up you are doing a disservice to yourself.

According to my understanding, Tool wrote this song to essentially be about human boredom and disconnect and how we've all become so fucking desensitized to everything around us, so the lyrics hint at a vague allusion to anal fisting, thus "Stinkfist". But really, the entire point was to gently push your mind in that direction as an example of the desensitization because your brain isn't going to look deeper without prompting, thus the final bridge. Just terrific human commentary. Maynard is fucking brilliant. "Something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety? How can this mean anything to me, if I really don't feel a thing at all?"

While I do enjoy their videos (Adam Jones's ideas and creations are incredible), I think a better reaction would be to just hear the songs without a visual. The videos can distract and take the discussion away from the music. Tool has been my favorite band since I was a freshman in high school. My tastes have changed and evolved, but I will always go back to this band. Each musician stands out, and the way they come together leaves me in awe.

Same - since high school when Aenima came out. I never got into their later albums because this album was just so amazing. I literally cannot drive while listening to most of the album because it's too intense and I mentally wander off. It's great for putting on headphones and just taking however long the album is to sit in the dark and listen.

As an aside, as a general rule I find newer Tool listeners are better off listening to the music without the video. They can be weird and crazy and pretty distracting. They're all brilliantly done for sure, but the real treasure of Tool is the incredible depth both phonetically and lyrically. The things this band does makes you feel like they have an infinitely more extensive discography than they actually do. I personally find the entire Lateralus album to be a fucking masterclass.

Great reaction and very entertaining! You two are a breath of fresh air! One thing about Tool's videos is that they are often very distracting and often don't have too much to do with the music. Still great pieces of art in themselves. One interesting fact - with most of the Tool songs, the instrumentation is laid out first and then the singer (Maynard James Keenan) adds lyrics. According to interviews, this is because each member is such a perfectionist, many "tweaks" are made to the song before words can be added. Schism is a great song, it's video is also very odd. I would also suggest Parabol/Parabola... the first song leads into the other so they need to be listened to together.

Adam Jones the guitarist. Is the artistic talent behind many tool videos and album covers. He took art & sculpting classes in college. Graduated in 87' After graduation, he went to work at Rick Lazzarini's Character Shop. During the next couple of years, he worked on the TV show Monsters. He designed and fabricated a Grim Reeper makeup and a zombie head on a spike (later used in Ghostbusters 2) After that, he went to Stan Winston's special effects workshop, where he worked on Predator 2, sculpting a unique-looking skull for the Predator's spaceship interior. Jones worked on several other films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurasic Park, Terminator 2 Judgment Day, Dances with wolves, and Ghostbusters 2. Tool is an iconic band ladies. Tool's amazing guitarist Adam Jones does their videos and he has worked on some other things that you may have seen. Here is more info on his film and commercial work: Jones was offered a film scholarship but declined and chose to move to Los Angeles to study art and sculpture. His interest shifted to film, and he began to work as a sculptor and special effects designer, where he learned the stop motion camera techniques he would later apply in Tool's music videos, such as "Sober", "Prison Sex", "Stinkfist", "Ænema", "Schism", "Parabola", and "Vicarious". He graduated in 1987. After graduation, he went to work at Rick Lazzarini's Character Shop. During the next couple of years, he worked the TV show Monsters. He designed and fabricated a Grim Reaper makeup and a zombie head on a spike (later used in Ghostbusters II) among others. After that, he went to Stan Winston's special effects workshop, where he worked on Predator 2, sculpting a unique-looking skull for the Predator's spaceship interior.[4] Jones worked on several other films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurassic Park, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Dances with Wolves, and Ghostbusters II. He did the "Freddy Krueger in the womb" makeup for A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, as well as work for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. He also worked on commercials for salad dressing (never aired), Olympic Paints & Stains (Albert Einstein makeup), and Duracell (boxers and taxicabs)

The thing with Tool is that the lead singer is extremely shy. Even in concerts, he's known to stand behind the drum set with his back to the audience. Also, as a band they agree that the music is what should define them. I remember on VH1's Greatest Artists show one of the commentators said "Tool could walk into this studio right now and no one would recognize them." And that's exactly what the band wants. Keep in mind, this is one of the biggest bands of the last 30 years and most people couldn't pick any of their members out of a lineup.

There is a good live Tool song "Sober" that someone edited the video of bunch of different videos to a master audio of the concert. (I think). Since we can't see them live, that's a good one. And it's their older stuff, and really shows you the lead singer is a powerhouse. Something newer would be Pneuma - Danny Carey Drum feature.
