Man Joe you come across some beauties, This was my first bike back in 1974 when I was 15 years old I saved up $250.00 and bought it from a guy whose son had it for only 6 months after buying it brand new and his son died. I told him I wanted it and even signed an agreement to buy it for $250.00 and he held it for one month for me. I came back and he was like well are you ready? I was so excited I slipped and said "Hell ya, oh sorry" He laughed and said you deserve it, son, Made my day. He came out with the keys and signed over the title and brand new Bell helmet and the tool kit with owner's manual, I shook his hand gave him the money, and said "Oh by the way sorry for the loss of your son, he said thank you and we are glad you will enjoy it and take care of it. loved that bike my next bike to own was a Hodoka Combat Wombat 250 that thing was a beast! lol

"COMBAT WOMBAT!!" I wanted one SO bad. Everybody had Yamahas, Suzuki, and Hondas but, I wanted to be different and get a Hodaka. Red and chrome. Beautiful. No, I never did. My dad gave me a car so, I never bought a bike.

Had a regular Wombat, a 125 on/off road. Also had Suzuki RM's and Honda CR'S (CR 480R put me in the hospital for a week) Hodaka's were FAST, easily holding their own with the big 4. The trick was not throwing the chain and breaking the shift cover.

That Honda 125 reminds me of the bikes Honda brought on campus during the 1970s for their “Learn to Ride” seminars. Docile enough to not spook new riders, but enough to leave you wanting more.

Rotate the engine, until the points close. Lift the top contact, insert the file, and GENTLY file the contact pads. I luv you for investing in a points file😊❤❤❤ The idea is to make the contact pads “square” with each other, which takes total advantage of the “dwell”

I would take her to day care every morning. Then I would ride back home and pick up my wife and ride from South San Jose to Cupertino. Then do the opposite in the evening. Cheapest mode of transportation I ever owned. However, I did replace it later with a Yamaha XS500C.

Joe, Lisle makes a really nice, small auto center punch. It uses a spring to shoot the punch out gently. I've found it works perfectly for the float pin when they are stuck. I support the other side with a block of wood and it usually gets it right out. Hope that helps man.

A friend had an old Honda 90 with the funky sheet metal back in the mid 1970s. It was great, just tootlin' around the neighborhoods with it. Not fast at all, but there was something fun yet relaxing about it that I never really experienced with the mid size bikes I had later. The Honda CM 400e was the only one that came close to just the effortless low key joy of just farting around that the little Honda 90 brought out.

here in southeast asia, the modern decendant of that bike is the backbone of the masses. used for transportation of goods and people and personal use. heck i even saw one converted to be used as a pulley system across a deep canyon up in the remote mountain. really sturdy and dependable bike. so popular even yamaha, suzuki, and kawasaki offered their own variant.

In 2000 I persuaded a friend to sell me the 1972 CB125S that he had in his garage...his father now many years deceased had ridden it to work as his commuter bike and it had only 28k miles on it. I got it for $60 and he threw in 2 helmets and all the spares that he had for the bike. It cost very little mechanically to get it going again..a spark plug, fresh oils...but $320 to resurrect it as I had to reregister it, licence it, and have it pass the 6 monthly safety inspection check... but then I could ride it to my work... free parking in the middle of the city in an enclosed yard 50 yards from the front door! The first weekend I decided to surprise him by riding it to where he was on holiday...300 miles away. He almost fell over when I told him I was going back home to sleep in my own bed that night...14 hours riding in one day. A month later I completed a 900 mile journey over three days with no problems....very reliable bike. When I did not need it anymore as a daily commuter I traded it to a friend who wanted a "vintage" bike suitable to teach his son to ride....

Had the CB125s in the UK, which morphed into the CB125J with more 'modern' (less pretty) styling, a tacho and claimed higher top speed. The J also had that mechanical disk brake, which would seize or partially seize if neglected and could show buttock-clenching lag in the wet. Then the CG125 which went back to the SLS drum on the front, which was adequate as the CG was a pushrod motor with only 11 horsepower and maybe 60 mph. I had one of those and it was unburstably, boringly reliable - I put over 50k miles on it and it showed 72k when I sold it, still going like a (slightly rattly) clock, same as when I got it. It sipped fuel, doing over 100 miles per gallon when thrashed everywhere, ideal for a student and then when unemployed in Thatcher's Britain in the early '80s. (You have a degree in Botany? You're overqualified. You wanna research job? You need a first class degree. Bad luck, mate). It had 6v electrics (poor) but direct ignition which meant the wee beast would always start. The OHV jobs were more peppy and would do good mileages if you changed the oil every 1K miles and cleaned out the centrifugal oil filter every couple of changes. Don't do that and they will eat top ends, nipping up the cam bearings and knackering the cam chains. The CG will survive neglect better. The frame was the same through the whole range and you can swap motors, tanks and other bits. An XL185 motor will go in, for more speed and 'interesting' handling when pushed in the twisties. A CB175 front end and 2LS brake (far, far better than the disc) will go on with some work and beefing up the frame will give you a CB125 sleeper that will pop wheelies and handle okay with better shocks.

@@Antiquefarmequipment Good point. It’s just that IF the tank is completely knackered (multiple rust holes etc) AND, given that the side covers are missing and need sourcing anyway, one might want to consider the green version in total. In my uneducated opinion, the green version of this bike is far far more aesthetic than the blue. If, on the other hand, the tank is recoverable, then simply source blue covers and the bike is good.

Those little CBs are actually pretty tough... as long as you change the oil regularly (about every 1000 miles, using good oil) they vibrate at high revs and the camchains and cams are a weak spot ... and of course the gearbox sometimes doesn't like coming out of gear at high miles.... but they look so cool. And the engine should be good for at least 20k miles, double that if you maintain it well.

74/75 was the best for this model. If I recall from my early days: the front disks were mechanical cable disks. Not really as effective as cable drums...and drum shoes last forever on a light bike. By 79 they were dropping the Tach and disk brake they added in 74 to keep the price down.

I own the same bike of 1972 as Model SL 125( kind of Enduro) with the same engine .You should clean the oil sump filter which is behind a cover with same hexagon nut on top as the valve cover, on left side of motor. Plus there is an aluminium oil filter rotor direct on the crankshaft under the right clutch cover.Often there is a lot of dirt in there .Plus check the oil level often because there is no oil pressure lamp and not very much oil in the sump.Good Luck.

Wicked mate. Please fix the tank as alot of us had this problem once in our lifes. We could learn or trade tricks. I heard coke is good to remove rust. U could be our test pilot. What really works and dont work.

If vinegar doesn't work on tank, try muriatic acid. This will clean the rust very quickly and it is cheap, you can get it at any pool supplier, just be careful with it.

My first motorcycle was a 1973 CB 350 that I bought new for $450 I believe. My buddy had a 1972 CB 750. I wanted a new CB 750 too but they were $1200 I think. I couldn't afford it. I was making $1.65 per hour. I was 22 years old.

My little XL 125 has spark without battery. Hasn't had battery in years. Last owner cut all of it out.

The carb for this can be replaced with a $26 copy on Amazon that works perfectly. I have a ‘75 XL125. Really fun bikes!

Unfortunately, those cheap carbs don't last very long. It's one of those situations where you get what you paid for.
