I can tell that this is going to be an awesome video just by the detail that he's explaining about the rings and using the steel wool to clean the interior of the cylinders and I know when he's done it's going to run like a brand new piece of equipment and it's been interesting to watch all of the troubleshooting and figuring out what's wrong with it a great series of videos thank you very much Joe for taking the time to explain everything as you go along

There is so much hidden knowledge from experience that people who are new to this accidentally screw up a lot of things. These motors are complex pieces of engineering and demand a knowledge that comes with gourds and hours of experience. My hat is off to you.Your posts are amazing how detailed you are on all these screwed up items. 😊

No worries on how many, and how long, the video parts are! They are truly educational, and entertaining. Gearheads want to see it ALL. I went thru similar on my Yamaha Warrior, that was somehow bent, fast, and uncontrollable. It almost seemed to be alive, and its mission was to kill me as painfully as possible. I pulled it in my garage last year, determined to find the problem(s), and fix them. Having zero knowledge of their construction, and even less video editing knowledge, I just recorded ALL the education trials, failures, and eventual success on getting it fixed. Having now learned some editing skills, I could likely take the hours of raw video (which are up on my microscopic youtube channel) and edit them down to about 30 minutes of video. I always look forward to your videos. Our ATV's: my 2002 Yamaha Warrior, my son's Polaris Sawtooth, my daughter's Suzuki LT80.

I am digging this rebuild. I definitely learned something new regarding the piston rings. As someone who has never rebuilt an engine, I was impressed that you knew about the taper and the orientation of the rings and the piston orientation. Great job and thanks for the content!

The bolt you found in the CVT holds the ring behind the primary CVT. There is a very strong ringing when driving, I think you should look into the variator again. Thanks for the video, greetings from Ukraine!

Great video series. I feel a bit sorry for the guy that you bought the bike from and the fact that he tried the best he could to rebuild the bike. We all have to start sometime I hope he watch the series and realized that you are Anne exceptional mechanic with excellent troubleshooting abilities. I hope you're keeping Benny away from all that antifreeze in your garage. 35 years ago I used to rebuild a lot of motorcycle engines and I really enjoy watching you do these videos. Keep up the good work

I'm catching up on your past projects...recently discovered your channel. I'm so impressed with you knowledge and experience. I almost have a sense of accomplishment watching YOU fix stuff! I noticed at the 35:53 mark in this video when you were checking to see if you solved the smoking problem a burst of flame came out of the tail pipe...not sure if you noticed that on playback (you weren't standing behind the machine (like we were) but were up at the controls. Anyway, kudos to you and thanks for the education!!

Stuff rags down in the cases when installing, in this case, pistons and the cylinders and the way you did it is the only way but when you go to install the circlips and one drops down into the cylinders you are then in for a whole new project. The reason the magnet won't stick to the valves is because they are likely stainless. Or very unlikely but titanium.

Good wrenching bud. I'm so glad it all worked out and the smoking stopped. Not sure you needed new pistons tho. Maybe just rings. Was the one oil ring seized? Fortunate the dropped push rod and so far out of time didn't do more damage. Turns out to be a very nice quad. A lot of work yes, but kinda typical for a previous owner without much rebuild experience. Nice work budroe. Great patience.

What's that metallic rattling/clanking? A plate loose somewhere? Would drive me nuts.. 😅 was it not audible while sitting on it? The mic might pick it up better, because when you turn around to look for smoke you can't hear it.. But on low revs, like in the beginning when backing it down from the trailer, riding on low revs between trees and second break in run when turning around by reversing. I didn't see anyone asking about it so maybe you mentioned it, apologize if I missed it!

When checking the ring gap, you should put an old ring onto the piston the put the top of the piston down into the bore. The piston will stop on the ring and make 100% certain the ring you are measuring is perfectly straight in the bore. You also want it close to the top as a lot of bores are actually a bit tighter at the top.
