Part I of this series is here:
• 2zz Swap Harness - Toy...
Swapping a 2zz-ge engine into a Toyota MR2 Spyder requires modification of the ECU wiring. This can be done with a specially made patch harness, available for purchase from Monkeywrench Racing, and shown in a previous video, or, as an alternative, by re-pinning the ECU connectors. This video outlines the required changes for re-pinning the harness terminals to achieve the same result as the MWR swap harness. A future video will show exactly how to perform these changes. The chart referenced in the video can be found here:

@@damonleeb No spark could mean blown EFI fuse, or IG fuse, or problem with immobilizer if you are using a immobilizer ECU. Hook up to your ECU with scantool, and verify you have a crankshaft position signal while you crank - rpm on scantool should be about 250 while you crank. If there is no rpm signal you could have a problem with the crankshaft position sensor or its wiring.

Your car has a harness for a drive-by-wire throttle body aka electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS), and the 2zz has a cable throttle body. You would have to re-wire this. You will also need to install a cable throttle pedal.

It does not matter. The OCV is a solenoid and will operate either way. Going by the service manual, if you face the connector, pin 1 is on the right and goes to the OVL+ on the ECM.

HELP! Was wondering if you could help me out. I recently swapped a 2zz into my dads mr2. The engine we bought came out of an already swapped mr2 spyder so really thw wiering was done on the engine side but we had to move wires to the body side (from what the gent who sold it to us told us). He cut his body harness and left it plugged into the ecu for us to aee exactly what needed to be moved and we did. Unfortunately now the car cranks but wont start. Seems none of the coils are fiering. Any thoughts on what we could have missed? Thanks!
@Merryfrankster_
@Merryfrankster_ Жыл бұрын
When you do the harness for the swap, there is just a few wires that are moved from one of the engine harness connector to go into the body harness connector. These do not affect the firing of the ignition coils - they just affect the O2 sensor. So this is not the issue preventing your car from starting. Check the fuses in the engine compartment, speciically the EFI fuse will prevent the car from starting. Does the check engine light come on when you turn the key in the ignition? It should light up briefly, then go off. If it does not, this means the ECU is not getting power. Try plug in your original 1zz ECU. Will the car start with it? Do you have a scantool? Does it show an RPM signal while you crank? It should be about 250rpm.

Great video, just one question...the body harness that goes to ecu will control the dash etc of the mr2 spyder? The key then needs to be re coded?
@Merryfrankster_
@Merryfrankster_ 4 жыл бұрын
First part of your question yes the body harness connects the ECU to the dash and other body functions like radiator, a/c control, et cetera. Fortunately the Celica ECU's pinouts are compatible with the Spyder body harness pinouts. Second part, regarding the key, in general for a 2zz swap you will use a USDM or JDM Celica ECU that does not have a immobilizer function. So you don't even need a transponder key. HOWEVER - if you choose to use a EU or UK 2zz Celica ECU, I believe those have a immobilizer function. You will have to follow the standard process for reset (or "virginize") the ECU then pair it with your existing transponder key(s). If you have any questions on how to go about this then let me know

GREAT Vid's, We are not all dumbmies, but I do have some questions. In your custom wiring, are you addressing the TPS pin-out? It is reversed from Celica GTS 2zz to MR-2/S 1zz. Does MWR swap kit address this issue? I should ask them as I did buy the kit. Thank you again, I just completely rebuilt an 01 Celica drop-out bolt for bolt for MR2/S swap (and LSD - Toyota Torsen type) Mr .P
@Merryfrankster_
@Merryfrankster_ 5 жыл бұрын
The TPS wire swap has to be done at the TPS connector. It cannot be done at the ECU. So the the swap kit cannot address to issue. You have to address it with your engine harness. The TPS connector has three wires. You leave the yellow wire alone. You swap the other two (purple and brown). I've shot a how-to for it, but it had lighting issues, so I have to re-do it. Stay tuned.

Hello@@Merryfrankster_, Thank you for the response. I truly appreciate persons like yourself that share knowledge over the internet. I did confirm, as you stated above, that the TPS pin-out does need changed, even with the "plug-n-play" system. What I do not understand is why this could not be performed at the MWR wiring extension that connects to the PCM and BCM? I would like to see the detailed pin-out on the control module but have not yet found. How does the OBD-II system know the throttle position if it is not an input? I do not believe this sensor is on a CANBUS or interact with any other modules on the wireharness..........but if I am in error, please advise. NOTE: I worked as an automotive wiring engineer for several years and as such am VERY familiar with wiring, pin-out, connector systems, and control on automotive systems. Thank you again for your time and response, and I look forward to future posts. Mr. P

Yes you can use the Matrix ECU. HOWEVER, it will take a lot more re-wiring work that the Celica ECU, which requires only a handful of wires to be changed. If you want to get the pinouts for the Matrix ECU you can find them on the Toyota Technical Information System (TIS), look for the section of the repair manual titled "Terminals of the ECM." Also I believe in general the Matrix ECUs have a higher lift engagement RPM and a lower rev limit.
