I view your car as the epitome of what a classic Z car should be. I have a 72 240Z that is about 98% rust free and I'm going to build mine in a similar fashion. High compression stroker L6 with a suspension setup for road race/autoX. I would also love to get a 510 someday but finding good one is tough.

The motor seized (kept in storage too long) before I was able to dyno it. Previous iteration had 265 hp to the wheels, but was significantly restricted by street exhaust. Between the full race exhaust and some other "in the weeds" engine internals, I'm guestimating 285+ whp, but now we'll never know. Hoping to have everything rebuilt (and dynoed) by the spring of '13...

My outer-valve-springs only setup limits my revs to 7600rpm max, though I have the damper/crank/flywheel balanced to 10k. My other springs are good to 9200rpm, but the outer-only setup saves some drivetrain loss. Cam drops out by 7250-7500 anyway. At 5:09 you can hear the rev limiter kick in for a second. I had it set to around 7250 or so because I didn't have A/F data and didn't want to harm the motor should it be too lean.

@S30xSoshinoya Staying in the DY? I'm not sure what that means, so I'll shotgun my answer. It's not stock. Koni 2-way race struts, 350/325# springs, heim-joint fully adjustable sways, camber plates, etc. The conditions of the road weren't the greatest and my slicks are near the end of their life cycle. Also, the rear end is a 4.37 R180 with a Quaiffe ATB, so the manner in which the rear swings out / breaks loose is different than that of a LSD: very touchy / requires different inputs.

Big cams will do that, have you watched any of the other videos with a cammed inline 6? They can be very lopey too. Plus, who makes a 3.1L V8 that doesn't cost two arms and two legs. I can think of one company that makes a 3-3.2 liter engine but that engine costs 40k and sounds like a F1 engine. This engine is just a well built inline 6. If I had to guess it started as an L28 and was stroked out to 3.1L with a big cam to go with it.

It didn't seize in storage, it seized after running for a few minutes after storage while I investigated the lack of oil pressure. I haven't touched the motor yet. I have some other things going on and don't have the cash for a project right now. How is it pointless to tear down a dedicated race motor and inspect for damage? That *is* the point: to inspect for damage. Something encountered a friction bind, or it wouldn't have seized.

I don't have any reason to believe that you should expect your motor to have seized, I still have no idea what happened. If you want to be safe, remove each spark plug and spray oil into each cylinder, remove the camshaft cover and lubricate everything with oil, and finally... turn the crank by hand. That's what I'd do.

Mels VW Oil pump failure leading to a full engine seize in about 30 seconds at idle. Very little internal damage, fortunately. Replaced the crank bearings, cam towers, two valves that were damaged, and upgraded to lightweight rockers. The rebuilt motor has been wrapped in cellophane for months... Budget and moving has put the project on hold.

Hah! This actually happened, the day before, after I tuned the car and was buttoning up the trailer. I was extremely apologetic and explained I came out to this empty area to not bother anyone but the cows as I tuned my carbs... that my car had open headers and sounded like it was racing no matter what speed I was going. He agreed that made perfect sense and we chatted for about 15 mins before parting paths. Not quite the same as city life! CA would have impounded my car for about 53 reasons...

Fresh engines stick when they sit, because they are tight. Pour some SeaFoam and/or some Marvel mystery oil in the holes and let it soak for a bit. I hope you haven't already torn the engine down, because it would be completely pointless.

@@zredbaron240 I can’t get over your car sir. I was tempted to do a VQ swap in my 240 but yours has sealed the deal! Thank you. I’ve been watching Datsun videos for the past couple years and yours just got recommended today. Thank the lords of algorithm! I’ve now watched all your videos 😂 Question … did you do all the engine upgrading after this video? It sounds a lot more raw here - but hey, your car in all the videos sounds immense. Again thank you for these videos and showing your journey with your Z
@zredbaron240 Жыл бұрын
@@BakerDeltaFour thanks for sharing your excitement and motivation. Good luck on your upcoming build! The car sounds raw here because it has no muffler, no exhaust - just open headers and no hood here. 😉 Was enough to leave one’s ears a bit deafened afterward, not recommended. 😅 In later videos the car has two mufflers in series in order to get under ~96 dB. Thanks again for your enthusiasm, I have been wanting to upload more videos from my hard drive. Lots of races and journeying never got shared. Would be cool to have organized playlists or maybe even a Wix website to support and help organize.

@@BakerDeltaFour incorrect. The long memoir video was 7 years after this video above. The head and cam are the same, and so is the transmission, diff, struts and headers.
