His playing on Savatage’s 1994 Handful of Rain (after Chris passed) is outstanding! He stayed true to Chris’ style while injecting his own thing! That’s when I became a fan.

That's awesome! I seriously need to check out more of Savatage's music. I've heard the classics/hits, but there are all sorts of albums and songs that I haven't heard.
@HunterRouth5 жыл бұрын
This is true. You gotta listen to all those Savatage albums to hear Skolnick, Al Pitrelli and Chris Caffery. All honored Criss Oliva. Criss was a huge Skolnick fan. If you don't know this. Savatage turned into The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They play Savatage songs from time to time live.

Alex is such a talented and amazing musician. He was one of the main influences that drove me to pick up the guitar so many years ago. His early fusion of thrash and neo-classical showed a generation of guitarist it’s ok to play beyond just metal. As an aside his comrade in arms Eric Peterson is no slouch either, one of the top five rhythm players in metal.
@andresdiaz27375 жыл бұрын
You said it, man. Alex and Eric are both perfect for Testament: one an outstanding emotional virtuoso, the other an esential driving force behind the band, writing the most kick-ass music ever. This guy here on this channel seems like a super cool dude to have a beer/jam with also.

Brilliant lesson - love lick 2 -how it heads into the baroque territory. BTW Alex's book Guitar Geek is very good . This reminds me of a lesson in guitar world by Alex . A George Lynch lesson was also featured.... "Aces !!" .

Great lesson! Can you do licks from Alex Skolnick's 1987 LIVE solo performed in Eindhoven?
@Yupppi3 жыл бұрын
How about 3 Alex Skolnick licks from 1988? That would be sick! The New Order, Practice What You Preach and Souls of Black have quite a few of some unique sounding and clever licks. What I remember especially from The New Order, was the constant devilish feel, he emphasized diminished feel so much. The licks like #2 has that same eerie feel to it. Yet one of my favourite stuff from him is Alex Skolnick Trio on their album Transformation, which is basically classic rock and metal songs transformed into groovy jazz. They sound great and you might only realize what they originally were from the title. His best solo in my opinion might be the studio diary like takes on youtube from Testament's recent years cover of Iron Maiden's Powerslave. It has killer licks and he just rocks and grooves on that. Even in the studio it has the vibe of playing a solo on stadium gig. That or Electric Crown's solo from Ritual. Was Alex Skolnick on any recorded Ozzy stuff? I recall he practiced with them but was kicked for someone else who fit Sharon's vision of the band better. Did he have time to play on gigs? Anyway, it always amazes me how clean he plays, but retains the rock feel and doesn't sound like a lifeless machine.

VeRy GoOd! Back when the early Testament albums came out, we didn't have internet so we had to, well, in the 70s we slowed down records, in the 80s' we hit "stop" and "rewind" on cassette players, and that's how I learned the Practice What You Preach solo. The struggle was real! But now we have KZbin, and here's Alex not only showing us a couple solos, but explaining his approach and what he was thinking at the time he wrote them. Pretty cool vid. In case you haven't seen it, here is the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i56XeJ2Fg7l_rKc
