I was 16 in 1988, bought Testament "The New Order" on cassette the day it came out...the first song "Eerie Inhabitants" was so killer, Alex's main solo in that song is still an all-time favorite. That whole album is so bad ass, Alex absolutely crushed it! I remember around that same time a local guitar shop had a 540 'Saber' just like his and i loved it, wanted it so bad but I was a broke teenager.

Thanks again David. Alex is probably the local guitarist I learned the most from by just from listening to him. I used to see him around a lot, but we never hung out more than randomly at a couple of parties. I still remember the last party I saw him at because our drummer had to drag one of our other friends out of the party by the scruff of his shirt while he was still yelling about kicking the butts of the people who had rightly kicked him out (great guy until alcohol was added).

What a gorgeous guitar. I have had the pleasure of watching Alex Scholnick Trio, was amazing to watch him and he had a few incredibly technical runs and moments that gave me goose bumps. And also what a cool intelligent guy.

Skolnick is legendary. "The Ritual" is right up there with "Rust In Peace" as the best Metal guitar jalbums of all time. The solo on "So Many Lies" has one of the greatest legato runs we have witnessed. Thank you for posting this lesson David.

Loved this era, everything sounded so evil. You'd just put this album on in the dark winter night in candle light and start summoning. Eerie Inhabitants already starts with that mood.

Dude you've been putting out awesome content like this for years! Thank you so much. And that pick guard on that PRS is the perfect combo. I remember being introduced to Alex as a teenager in the 90's via a guitar magazine. I was like, "nobody can play all these notes" and then I bought Practice What You Preach and have been a fan since...

Saw a whole lot of bands there, and I played there half a dozen times myself. The sound engineer loved me because I had a 50 watt Marhsall head that was super mid rangy and punchy. Later on when learning recording engineering, I learned why my guitar came out so well in the live mixes back then, even though onstage I couldn't hear myself well. Too bad it closed down so long ago. That and Ruthies Inn, witch was called Keisha's by the time I played there. Always thought it cute how the owner would rename it after his current GF. Super fun times though, growing up right in the middle of thrash being born. I remember when it was mostly a few garage bands. Then Laaz Rockit became a thing, and Exodus right behind them. Rick Hunoldt and his twin Lonnie were actually two of the first people I met when we moved to the Oakland Hills from Berkeley. Just took a peek at your user pick enlarged, and no, I don't recognize you. Not in that pic at least. It's been a minute though since those days. Ah well. Hope life is treating you well, regardless.

Omg, Not only do I love your channel as you have help build my skills. But now you are doing Skolnick, which is a friend of mine. I hung out with Eric Peterson, Alex, Greggy, and back before Chuck when Zet was the singer and they were called Legacy. I was in the garage at Erics house in Alameda CA when they announced their new name and new singer. I still keep in touch with Eric and Alex quite a bit. Oh, and you forgot to mention his time with the Trans Siberian Orchestra! DIggen this so much!

Yeps, I grew up in that scene too (I'm from Oakland and Berkeley). And you were around in the very early days too, so I'd probably recognize you if I saw you in person. I was just a kid back then though, and really shy. But was already giving guitar lessons (mostly for free to friends of mine). Remember Sequoia Point in the Oakland hills? I lived in walking distance (would be a hike now). That's how I met a lot of metal heads at first when I was still a kid.

@@aylbdrmadison1051 Lol I was also just a kid and so was the band lol. I think I had just turned 20 when they switched from Legacy to Testament. Yes I remember the oakland hills craziness. My youtube channels has plenty of videos of me now and I am one of the few people that looks almost exactly the same as I did back then lol. Your name doesnt look familiar, but yeah, we probably stepped in the same blood puddles at Ruthies Inn a few times lol.
