I'm a proud Blackmagic Pocket 6K owner and I must say I sometimes have this love-hate relationship with it. The poor battery, no IBIS, unusable AF, and EF mount (huge flange distance), ridiculous crop factor when shooting higher frame rates, etc are some of the biggest down sides of this camera. I honestly don't like nitpicking but the value this camera brings for the price is amazing. However, I really wish the next Blackmagic camera has 1. A Box body like ZCAM/Panasonic BGH1 because that's quite easy to balance on a gimbal than the current design. 2. A Full Frame sensor! Global shutter please! 3. IBIS and Auto Focus like the Komodo 4. RF MOUNT!!!! 5. A better battery option than the current one! Priced at 3000-4000$ would be MAD!

Battery life is okay. Try original pocket. It's like 2 minutes. 6K can easily get you 30 full minutes. The only really stupid thing is that huge ass ugly EF mount when it could be RF. And the wide ass body is a big issue when using gimbals.

All those are great points, but I would seriously just be happy with a pocket 4K or 6K in a boxy body with built-in ND filters and IBIS. I would take either an EF mount or even micro 4/3 mount- neither of those mounts is a deal breaker for me. I think form factor and ND filters would trump everything else.

Would really love to have box shape because most of these cameras are going to be rigged out anyway to be used on projects. Current shape is kind of uncomfortable to hold especially if you have put lot of weight on it with cage/vmount/monitor ect. And the body is already so wide that if i add any side handles for better grip, it becomes ridicilously wide.

That's a dream camera! Also hope for a box shape micro cinema camera 4k. Love the pocket 4k but would love to have it more rig-friendly. I don't mind having the mft with the metabones but of course a at least super 35 and rf-mount would be killer! I hope they can bring out a new global shutter sensor with good dr and color too. To rival the komodo :p The komodo I think takes to long to start, a bm is way quicker! :)

The only thing that excites me is the gh6. They fix the AF problem and it is perfect for almost every kind of work. At least for me I would have one camera that works for shooting weddings and that works for KZbin content. For extra points if they added an electronic ND filter in there, it would be over the top amazing. C'mon Panasonic I'm rooting for ya.

What do you think about Sony A1 note that it’s been announced? I know it’s like a hybrid and probably more tailored to photo but what’s your thoughts on the 8K 30FPS and the 4K 120 FPS?

well.. As you said, it's a photo camera. 8K is overkill, trust me, you won' need it. I had the RED helium 8K and over 2 years I haven't shot in 8K once. So i switched to RED Gemini 5K. 4K 120 is already in the A7S3. I mean the image would be oversampled from 8K or 5.6K in all cases, which could potentially look better than the A7S3. Picture quality is what we'll need to see side by side. So yeah.... not for serious filmmakers I would say, just like the R5

For me, a photo or video is about the emotions and the story it tells me. Not about the dynamic range, sharpness, pixels or the bokeh. These days, its all about the specs. Awesome content like always! What you mean by "dedicated advanced anamorphic mode" at 6:48? Does the S5 have more anamorphic modes to choose from than the S1H? I own an S1H and love it except the crop in 50/60fps and the rolling shutter... (it was better on the GH5 with a 0.7x focal reducer and I even had a wider field of view than the Super35-Mode of the S1H when shooting anamorphic 50fps with a focal reducer, because I could use the full height of the sensor...) so I'm looking forward to the GH6 too. Also can you describe, what you prefer in the color science from Blackmagic compared to the Panasonic's? :) thanks man

Yeah it has a dedicated menu, unlike the S1H, I talked about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKeohJ6LnpaHiNk Color science of skin tone is very reminiscent to Alexa, the log cure as well seems to be pulling down highlights with a better rolloff than S1H or V-Log. it's hard to explain, it's better seen than explained.

not sure how i'd feel about a $3000 GH6 although I'm already heavily invested in M43 lenses. However a game changing, flawless AF system for the GH6 will definitely give everyone sitting on the fence between an S5 and a potential GH6 to go for the GH6. Awesome video as always!

Complaints about the "pocket" a) the form factor b) we need to be able to turn the rear screen off c) a mirrorless mount would give us way more lens options. In the future I'd like to see a version in a cube shape like Z Cam and RED Komodo, with lots of mounting points. Also, turn the big screen into a detachable field monitor with signal and power supplied by the body and ship it with the camera.

Blackmagic needs to fix their form-factor! No matter what's inside, the shoe shape is a deal-breaker for me. My dream camera would be a blackmagic in a RED form-factor (box, side handle, top screen, battery in the back). Great video btw!

Easily the best prediction video in the cinema camera section of KZbin! I don't care about whether in the end of the 2021 another KZbinr is proven to have had the more accurate predictions - watching this video taught me a lot about the strenghts and weaknesses of the current models on the market, and that is much more important than having the better forecasts. Also the bottom line about using the one you already have is absolutely true :-D

Honestly the 12800 base second ISO usually is quite a bit of a disadvantage, since everything above ISO 3200 is quite unusable till you reach ISO 12800, which means you'll need either fast lenses or super strong ND filters.

above 3200 being unusable depends on the camera after all. But nowadays, sensors are getting much cleaner than before

Waiting for the BMPCC 6K mk2 is the right thing to do. I wanted to get the 6k last year but I'm always scared of the first gens. That being said, my 5D mk2 it's getting pretty old, I can't wait much longer! Video on point as always, keep it up!

Love the fact you mentioned the Panasonic GH6. It could be the last M43 camera from Panasonic, but I think it will go out with a bang. GH5 & GH5s have been amazing to use for my filmmaking at a budget.

I don't think it'll be the last M43 honestly, not becuse they focused on FF they'll end up dropping M43. But yeah, it took them a long time to update it because of the FF launches as you know

Looks like the Pocket 6k Pro is still Super35, still has an EF mount, but now has internal IRNDs, uses NP-F batteries, has a 1500Nit HDR tilting screen, Gen 5 color science and only costs $2500. By far the lowest price cinema camera with these features. There is also an optional new battery grip and EVF. I think the reason it doesn't have a RF mount is likely two fold. First is licensing cost, and second it now incorporates IRNDs so is using that additional space granted by the mount for something.

We use a bunch of Production, Pocket and Micro 4K BlackMagic's and love them... in-studio. However, the BlackMagic AF is unusable in most real world situations, the stabilization is out of 2010, and after our team have used the A7SIII in the field for just a few months, between the complete lack of noise, amazing AF and gorgeous filmic look in Resolve, we are moving away from BlackMagic and our last Canon to SONY's and our newest upgrade to an ARRI LF. The Venice and the A7SIII are the only units we've used that can be easily and seamlessly graded with the LF in almost any lighting condition or dynamic shooting situation. In fact, the SIII does a few things at lower noise levels than the ARRI. Given that the little SONY is about $136K less than the new LF not even including the almost $300K in LPL lenses, that is amazing! Obviously, none of these yet compare with the high-end ARRI 65's, but the completely geared-out SONY's with amazing glass and all, are less than a day's rental of a typical ARRI 65 rental drop with just a couple lenses and a Media Station. Plenty of great movies continue to be made with much less than a SONY A7SIII, like we used to do.

Funny you say that. We are just finishing-up our 5th Hollywood film, done using a range of Sony and ARRI gear. We have 6 mounted and 4 drone A7SIII's. Before going this direction on an $85 million production, we blind-compared test footage we shot over 2 weeks on all the gear. In high lighting, the Canon's and Blackmagic held-up well, other than DOF. However, in high contrast and low lighting, there is currently no other reasonably-priced substitute for the Sony's. We do have a 2 year old Venice on set also, which grades very well with the ARRI also. I'm told by somebody I know in the sensor industry that Sony is playing hard ball with Panasonic on PDAF sensor licensing. It's NOT that Panasonic doesn't want those sensors....it's that Sony is making it hard (i.e. too costly) to get them. When I asked him why Sony sells PDAF sensors to Olympus, Nikon and Fuji...but not Panasonic, his answer to me was that Sony and Panasonic's relationship was very "complicated". So, I'm told that Depth From Defocus is just Panasonic's desperate attempt to make lemon's into lemonade. They are backed into a corner and this is NOT their fault. Hopefully, future negotiations will lead to Panasonic finally getting PDAF sensors. But so far, Sony seems to enjoy seeing the market complain about Panasonic's AF problems. Sony seems to be in no rush to step in and save Panasonic. However, Sony does seem to be happy selling contrast only sensor licensing.

As a long time user of Panasonic, which has excellent color science (IMHO), I too hope that the GH6 will come with phase detection AF. It really is needed. And as you said, I think it's the only way Panasonic can keep their market share - and possibly increase it. As a filmmaker, I am very interested in the Canon C70. I shot with the Canon RP and really like the RF lenses. Speaking of RF, as an owner of the BMPCC4K, I too would like to see a BM camera with an RF mount. I believe keeping up with technological advances is important for manufacturers to stay relevant in such a competitive market as mirrorless cameras. I also want to see the features you mentioned in future BM cameras. Thanks again for such a well researched and well produced camera review and predictions. I hope your predictions come true.

I honestly didn’t find it that exciting. It’s like a Cine version of the A7S3. With XLR, ND Tinecode and SDI. But it falls short in some areas compared to S3, like the AF touchscreen, menu... So I didn’t find it to be like a whole new camera with a lot to talk about

On Canon, I think you're more likely to get two cameras between the C70 and C300iii: a C90 with an RF mount; and a C200ii with an EF mount. They will be fairly similar in terms of output, but the C90 will be in the form of the C70, and the C200ii will be in the form of the C300iii. It is also likely that the C200ii will be about $1,000.00 more than the C90, and will have a viewfinder -- as standard.
