Wow, I've actually started another online course and was given 10 chords in a PDF file in my last lesson. Overwhelmed is a good word to describe it, lost too. Then I watched your video on 4 chords, then this one and I've realized that your way is perfect for me. Congrats on developing your method Lauren and thank you!!

You probably will never see this but if you do? THANK YOU. Your courses are wonderful . I started private lessons at a local music store. The guitar teacher knew I never played before (I'm 62) . He started me out with learning 11 chords! I felt at a loss from the start. You bring simplicity and an "I can do this" feeling when I watch your videos. Thank you

Really good advice Lauren. I've been playing pro and semi-pro for 57 years and used to teach students in the early 70's when I was younger. Now that I'm retired, I'm teaching again, and I always like seeing approaches other teachers take. Your capo lesson was the first one I saw, this is the second one. I'll be checking out lots of your other videos, but just wanted to check in here.

I never used a metronome when I first started out. Once I started using one it made a huge difference. My nephew recently asked me to teach him how to play and one of the first things I did was give him a metronome and told him to use it. A couple of weeks ago we performed together at a church Christmas party and listening to him play was one of the best Christmas presents I've ever gotten.

Great advice : 1. Don’t try to learn too much at once 2. Use a metronome & measure success 3. Give yourself structure & a plan (Turn off KZbin after a little bit of a viewing and actually practice. Practice with the the guitar in your hands is better than watching someone teach) Thanks Lauren you are a treasure

Great tutorial Lauren. You're right on with the 3 biggest mistakes and I see from other comments here that I'm not alone. I was all over the place and trying to learn too much at once. I'm starting to stay focused on just a few songs and perfecting a few chords. I started working with the metronome and it's very helpful. I was always feeling tense anticipating chord changes and the metronome seems to relieve that tension and strumming goes on autopilot after a while. Your teaching style is wonderful for us seniors and beginners, especially easier chords to start and it doesn't take long to get your fingers in shape to be able to do harder more difficult versions of those chords. Practice really is the key to learning and improving. Thank you.

Great analysis, great advice. I have spent so much time and have progressed so slowly for all of those reasons. Good job you didn’t identify 10 issues. My excuse for trying to learn multiple things at the same time is to try and get over the “boredom” of repetition. Bouncing around trying to play a song to learning some theory and then getting caught up in the entertainment of the music you are trying to learn is where I am. Thanks to this video, I will narrow my focus, work on fundamentals and use your advice for motivation and concentration. Good job lady!

Great video. I did the same. Learned the G, C, Em and D stuff and learned to transform almost any other chord variation to this patern, and using a Capo works fine. Just for a beginner is much easier to learn to play a G with 4 finger and instead of a regular C major, just use a Cadd9. And from Cadd9 is much easier to an Em7 and from Em7 to D because you have to move only 2 fingers (the first and second ones). The third ring finger stays always on the B string third fret. So it is much easier to learn to play faster, and also sounds really cool.

Hi Lauren. My guitar journey is a long one. I’m 64 years old and started playing approximately 30 years ago. I’m left handed so at a disadvantage to begin with. Played restrung guitars. For a long time and about 10 years ago treated my self to a Martin D35 left handed. What a difference but life happened and I stopped playing for several years. Ran across your videos by accident and mud say after watching your videos that the fire has rekindled. I pulled it out of the case, dusted it off, tuned it up and now it is sitting back in plain sight. Seems like I’m relearning so much stuff and your videos are awesome. Thanks for all you do.

When I instruct, I have the student work on three chords, starting with the major chords and then the minor chords. I do this as we are doing several things at once: 1. proper finger position on the strings for the (open to start) chords; 2. working on coordination between the three chords to train your hands to find the positions without thinking about it (eventually); and, having the three major chords in a key to allow you to move to the point of playing a song. If we start with the key of D, the three principle chords are D, G and A7. I like this key as it challenges you make chord changes with very different fingerings in these open voicings. Once you have all of the open voicings in the seven keys, we add the minor fingerings. In the key of D, the relative minor chords are: Bm, Em and F#7. Along with learning the chords, enough theory is learned so that you understand WHY D, G and A7 fit into the key of D and why the relative minor chords work in that key signature. Like it or not, if you eventually want to learn how to solo over a chord progression, you have to have some theory under your belt to understand why certain notes will sound solid within a soloing structure, feel the chord change at the transition and do the turnaround to start over again. It is the case that there are a number of amazing players who will admit to you that they know zero theory. They pull it off because they are guitar geniuses. If you are not a guitar god, you will have to learn some theory. My teaching method contains those three elements: positions; coordination of finger positioning changes between chords and understanding why those chords work within a key. Considering how many songs are based upon three chords, you can get to the point of playing a song. The next challenge is reading the lyrics, singing the lyrics with the correct notes and playing the correct chords in the tempo of the song. Play on!

Wow! You're an actual teacher. After watching so many videos from last week, this is the video I was looking for, and thankfully my thinking was right. I have checked your course. It's too expensive for me. But yeah, I believe that your training worths the money. I am following you on KZbin.

The metronome thing... I own a Singular Sound BeatBuddy, and I only use it when I'm trying to fuddle my way through a song, badly. (If you don't know, it's a pedal that plays drumming patterns with fills, etc., which you control with your foot. It's a more fun metronome, essentially.) I should use it as a metronome when I practice my chord changes -- that's *GENIUS.* Then I'll know *exactly* how fast my chord changes are, instead of just guessing that maybe I kinda felt faster this week, blah, blah, blah. Thanks for that idea!

Thanks. That has been the biggest problem for me. Which chords do I need to know and which one should I be practicing? and before I know it, I’m going through 6 or 7 different open chords. As I beginner I’ve set my goal to learn “Row Row your boat”, it’s short simple and should get me used to switching between G,C and D. I don’t know how I feel about working with a metronome, I fear I would be fighting against it as it still take me a second or 2 to find my fingers.

A great video with excellent tips! If you have the time, could you do a brief lesson on how to use a metronome, or am I the only person who doesn't know how to use one? I know what a metronome is and what it does (basically), but I don't know how to use one properly and effectively while playing music. Feel free to point me somewhere if you already know of a decent source for this information. Thanks, Lauren!

I am self-taught (and it shows) but I got a Beatles song book and started with simple songs that I knew and played it ad nausea. Then I looked for a new song with one chord I didn’t know and so on. I can reasonably play all the major chords, am, em and dm along with c7 and d7 and c bar chords. I was lucky in the sense that I learned a little music theory in college.

Every guitar beginner who is enthusiastic to give it a go should watch this video, really! My biggest mistake when I started was KZbin. It's a curse and a blessing. Takes a while to find out what's good and/or suited for you and what's not. I've had the luck to find a great guitar teacher who lives nearby, and then I kinda use YT as an addition to those private lessons. And hey, Lauren sure is a great addition!!!

Lauren, you are simply the best guitar teacher on KZbin. I've had two lessons in my life. And the dude didn't know what to do with me. Everything else I've learned on my own.
