I am 81 years old. I do jigsaw puzzles on my iPad for relaxation, between reading and studying. I have a curiosity that keeps me learning new things. (Hence, I am here watching your video.). I taught school ages 2nd grade through 12th grade, but I’m now retired. I still teach Sunday School class of adults. I feel my memory changing, so, A BIG Thank YOU for challenging us to keep our brains active.

My husband and I have been learning to play ukulele and find that having one hand chording while the other hand strums or fingerpicks, plus adding singing and reading the music has been a great brain exercise.

I've taken up welding as a hobby and now in retirement it is so satisfying - mainly because every project is a new challenge. I'm enjoying the continuous switch between inches and centimeters, doing geometry in theory and esp. practice, and creating items I haven't even dreamed of before! In doing so I watch a lot of KZbins and learn new techniques, and often try and fail but keep going until I succeed. Almost akways I listen to music, audiobooks, podcasts, and video discussions.

Tapping into the inner child is my favorite way to be! I love to see the world through the eyes of a child! Novelty is key! When I was a child, I would spend hours building structures from blocks. There was no Lego where and when I was growing up. I absolutely love good quotes and the quote from Voltaire you mentioned here: With greatness comes responsibility". I also used to read comics. Additionally, I am also a multiple mild TBIs survivor. Everything you are talking about is relevant to me and Dr. Amen is an excellent expert, I read one of his books. Thank you so much for this video Jim, it made my inner child smile! 😊

Great video. I appreciate your explanations of how your three suggestions affect our brains. I am 76 and just thinking about trying macrame. It uses both parts of our brain. For me it will be developing a new skill. I also had a piano but had to give it away when I moved into senior low income housing. I have shared this video with others who are concerned about their mental health ~ thank you Jim for another expressive video ~ Marilyn

Thank you as always brilliant ideas to help everyone. I myself started learning new languages and picked up a new one every year and jump back and fourth between languages everyday to help my mind work better and it is working. My memory is improving constantly. I also do puzzles and Lego with the grandchildren which also helps. Gives me more courage to try new things since I never thought I could learn another language because of my poor memory. You don't know unless you try.

Thank you so much, Jim, I grew up very dyslexic and also felt like I wasn't a part of society. Your words are so healing. I cry every time. I will be doing all the things that you say. I am highly creative and an incredible mover and I'm 66 and I'm ready to be fully alive even more. Karin

Presently, my brain exercise is Sudoku on my tablet. I also love to walk and prefer unpaved ground because the unevenness of the path is good for the brain/body connection. This video has inspired me to get back into jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles. I'm moving onto a residential cruise ship and embracing all kinds of new growth and adventure. Seeing the world, learning new things about culture (dance, language, and food), and making new friends with my new neighbors is going to be super.

You don't really have to memorize all of them unless you're trying to become a Chess Master. For the rest of us, the puzzle of trying to out-strategize someone around your chess rating is enough to get a good brain workout.

Thanks for this, I wanted my 50 plus mom brain more active so I downloaded Jigsaw puzzle. Now, I have more confidence in it to work. And, for some reason I thought, Chess, Sodoku or Water Puzzle or sort maybe on the list too. But, my favorites are Sodoku, Zen Match, jigsaw, and fighting games like Shadow fight. I know, sounds weird but these games really challenge me and is fun at the same time and they don't pain my head when I get things wrong.

I am 80 years old and started learning the game of chess about 18 months ago. I enjoy it very much but I would like to progress at a faster pace. I win about 1/3 of the games I play however sometimes I’m playing people that are much more experienced than I. Any advice on how I can learn faster, better, or should I consider some other game rather than Chess. I hate to give it up. I really do enjoy the game. Thoroughly enjoy your podcast and thank you so much!
