I notice that your foam roller fits nicely into the joint in your treatment bed but I found the roller I bought initially slipped around making the exercise really difficult so I recommend getting a non-slip one. Great exercises that really help.

They’re gazillions of YT videos out there with similar information. Why I personally enjoyed this one and walked out knowing that I actually learned and remember what I’ve seen and heard? Because of the simplicity and transparency of the teaching method. It wasn’t flashy, over the top, redundant or silly. I love the sober and straight forward presentation. Keep up the great work!

Some of us stopped moving as much due to an accident or surgery which then added additional challenges. While we were working to get through this, we were continually aging which made healing and recovery a longer process and added more trouble. The up and down roller coaster is not the easy road you describe, but if it’s working for you I am very happy for you.

There is soooo much to be said for this video! I’m a 71 yr old male and 30 lbs overweight. At least half of this weight gain in the past year was from a severe case of plantar fasciitis. The main reason for this was tight calves and not stretching. This was incredibly debilitating because it lasted 9 months. I couldn’t walk far and even trying to ride a stationary bike was painful. This was a huge change for me. I used to play 3 rounds of golf per week and walk all 18 holes with no problem. This was not only challenging physically but also very much so mentally. Winter lasts a good 5 months where I live. Being couped up not being able to go anywhere due to PF was really difficult. Anyhow the stretch shown for tight calves was very helpful. Even custom made orthotics from a Podiatrist didn’t help that much. You do not want to go through what I did if you can avoid it. Now I stretch 20 minutes a day. I will add on the thoracic stretch. I’m fortunate to not have had much of any back issues and now hope to keep it that way. Great video! Many thanks!

An osteopath (who also worked as a paramedic) told me that the majority of ambulance call-outs was to older people who, after a fall, couldn’t get up from the floor. I myself, like to sit on the floor as much as possible and have always done so. I’m currently sitting on my yoga mat watching this video. Once it’s finished I will do my short, daily Pilates practice to keep myself as active as possible. I’m 73 in July and have spondylolothesis. Luckily only grade 1.

This is great! I’m 75 and, before the pandemic, I could lower myself to the floor with my legs crossed, then do a split squat get up with no hands (a “sit to stand” score of 9). The pandemic did a real job on me, and I’ve been looking for progressions that would enable me to get back to where I was. Instead of feeling depressed about having to use my arms or a chair, you’ve encouraged me to just get back to work. By the time I am 76, I intend to be able to do a Turkish get up!

Really? I'm one of those who got busy on my home gym right away make sure I had a pocket so that I could always carry my phone on the daily walks around the neighborhood as it was just coming onto spring here, so I could always be mindful of getting my steps, because I was so concerned about losing strength. I DID NOT want to get that thing, so I made sure to just step everything up that I could. And it worked. I think I had covid the first three weeks of January of 2020, before anyone had heard of it in the general population, followed all the recommendations which are just common sense anyway, and never did get it till late 2022, when someone had it at my sister's job and never told anybody. Anything you can do to not just boost but optimize your immune system, is probably the best thing for EVERYTHING

At 71 I'm certain I can benefit from each of these exercises. I live alone so I do need to know how to get up from a lying position on the floor. I haven't fallen yet but my lack of flexibility and issues with balance suggest it's a real possibility. Add to that hips that aren't as strong anylonger and you have a challenging set of circumstances. You do as fine a job helping the elderly to better living then anyone on KZbin. Thanks from The U.S.

So useful. I have been practising getting up from the floor without holding onto anything for several months. I only do it occasionally (a few times a week, should do it more often) and it has gone much easier. I was actually shocked to discover I couldn't do it easily: I hadn't noticed but my brother challenged me and I realised how hard it was. I also have very tight calves but didi not realise that was affecting my knees and ankles.

I'm 54. I started working out, running, competition swimming, skiing, horse riding, cycling, walking, playing tennis from the age of nine till I was about 16. Then you start working in your 20s. Then you raise a family and moving the way a body is designed to move gradually gets shoved further and further into a corner until it's .. forgotten. I am still in overall good health but the loss in strength is noticeable. And that's a little frightening sometimes. We should move, throughout our lives and especially when we get towards the end because it significantly improves the quality of life of an aging person. It's incredible how society seems to have accepted that old people are immobile. That's so untrue. You can develop muscles ALL THE TIME. Muscle has no age. My father is 84. He fell in the garage. He was alone in the house and remained on that cold floor for FOUR HOURS. What this very competent gentleman said about practicing getting up from the floor can probably save your life. We aren't being taught what we need to know from mainstream media. Why is that? Many thanks for your golden advice. ❤

I think it's a shame that it's not instilled from a young age. I always remember a documentary about China & how they work out first thing in the morning. I once had a Chinese guy clean my home & it was remarkable how he actually *SQUATTED* when he went to pick up anything from the floor. It was totally natural for him.

First of all: the way you explain the physics and cause of pain is excellent. I am a 65 yr old passionate garden-loving (and working) woman with scoliosis and hip- as well as knee-problems. But with daily exercises I could avoid surgery so far. What I could not get rid of is the constant shoulder and neck pain. Even massage (fortnightly) and exercise did not change much in the level of constant pain. But the roll exercise for the extension in the upper spine makes ALL the difference! Another great video. I'm having such a fun morning watching these! Getting up via one leg is sooo crucial. I recently started doing lunges again to increase my strength. So glad to see it mentioned here. In addition I practice being on the ground and having the top of my foot on the ground and then curling my toes under me so that I can use my feet to help me up. I noticed I was losing some strength in that area of my feet and ankles and added that exercise to my days when I work on my shin strength as well. Gotta keep those kinetic chains moving smoothly! I haven't been doing thoracic extension. I forgot all about it. This video is a great reminder. [Going to work on it now.] I was very overdue. I got a good adjustment out of it. These videos make me feel more positive about aging. I'm not 50 yet, but soon. I wasn't looking forward to crossing that threshold and my recent (last 6 mos.) inactivity was making things worse. 50 doesn't look as bad now. It's a relief to have resources where we can learn the most current research via knowledgeable guides. Thanks, HT Physio!

I’m 53 and found you because of shoulder pain. It actually hadn’t occurred to me that my age might have something to do with it! I can still sit on the floor and get up without thinking but will now bear in mind that I need to stay practised at it. Thank you Will!

Will, you are simply AMAZING! I am 47 but I am following your advices as I have just realized that I need to be more fit and strong as I have had such a sedentary lifestyle with not enough muscles. Truly appreciate what you are doing!

I think I’m blessed because walking briskly 2 miles a day in nature makes my pain go away. My calves do get tight so I’ll be mindful of stretching them. I tried the foam roller on upper back & it made a huge difference!

A great video. I didn't realise where the attachments of the calves are. I regularly do calf stretching, but didn't realise it could help my knee arthritis, so many thanks. I'm nearly over-80, and Ive come to realise that keeping muscles strong is essential. Then, the getting up off the floor won't need a chair. I think a good philosophy is "you only age when you sit down" . When you sit down doing nothing, like watching TV . Sitting down to do leg exercises is OK.😂

Thanks Will, I have just realised I can't get up unaided (with chair) and have lost so much core strength since my spinal operation in 2022. So will start the exercises immediately and look to be able to get off the floor unaided by end of the year.

I'd be interested to know how best to get up from the floor without bending my knees or putting any weight on them? I have severe osteoarthritis in both knees and am unable to fully bend them or kneel on them because it causes excruciating pain. Grateful for any advice. Thanks.

Thankyou for such clear explanation of why, and how to remedy. I'm off to fill a 2 litre pop bottle, so I can work on my thoracic area. Christine.

Hi, Will! I just tried the thoracic extension! Wonderful! The only things holding back this 73 fan of yours from getting back in shape have been my IBS-C discomfort and migraine-like headaches. I've been incorporating your exercises into my own strength workouts. However, in between workouts, busy errands (over 6000 steps yesterday) I sit in between. Yesterday I had a healthy lunch followed too closely by vacuuming, leaned forward lugging canister vacuum, then a shopping errand. While shopping I felt IBS twinges in my gut. Today your exercise and other extension relaxation seem to have loosened the very things that trigger headaches and smooth digestion. I probably need a standing desk for computer research and any leisure time at home. Thanks for your help! ❤

Excellent! Had a fall on a wet, ceramic tile floor in the kitchen a few years back. Broke T-12. Not fun. Back has been getting stiffer. Just really needed this thoracic stretch. Did it in the last five minutes and wow! Great for relaxing those mid back muscles too. Also recently challenged with Achilles tendon pain so the gentle calf stretch does help it. I get up from the floor daily. Just about to be 71. 😅 Thanks for this video. Subscribed! “Motion is lotion.” 😊

I am frequently on the floor or ground, whether sitting or kneeling. Either way, using a square garden kneeling pad really helps cushion my joints to make getting up easier. I have thought about putting one in each room of my house. I also use chairs like shown in the video. My PT taught me a hamstring stretch that stretches the muscles all the way from my lower back to the bottom of my calf. Lie on the floor, raise your leg to a 90 degree angle and keep your ankle at a 90 degree angle also. I don't always lie on the floor for it; it feels so good I do it throughout the day to stretch my muscles.
