Join us for an exciting adventure of fishing on ATLIN Lake.
We spend 3 days boating, fishing, and camping on a picturesque island, on Atlin lake, along with some magnet fishing. We find ourselves alone on this island in Atlin lake's Turqouise waters.
While we eagerly await more snow for our winter trips, let’s take a trip back to summer for our fishing and camping escapade on ATLIN Lake. We’re getting ready to launch the m/v Beluga into the vibrant waters of ATLIN Lake and head out for these 3 days of fishing and camping. Our fishing rods are packed, and we’re determined to fill our freezer with fresh fish before winter arrives.
Summer in the north is a cherished season. After 7 long months of winter, the midnight sun and 3 months of warm weather offer a welcome change. It often feels like a race against time to enjoy all our summer adventures before the landscape turns from vibrant greens to a blanket of white with pastel skies.
We reside on the shores of the largest natural lake in British Columbia, ATLIN Lake. This majestic lake was named by the local Taku River Tlingit First Nations, meaning "big water." ATLIN Lake serves as a crucial freshwater reserve for our community. It is fed by glaciers and marks the start of a lake system that flows into the Yukon River, eventually leading to the Bering Sea.
ATLIN Lake is abundant with rainbow trout, arctic grayling, and northern pike. Armed with our fishing rods, we eagerly anticipate putting some fresh fish in the freezer to sustain us through the winter months.
The stunning colors of *ATLIN Lake* range from deep blue to a brilliant turquoise, but be cautious-the water temperature is only 7 degrees Celsius in the summer. While it looks appealing, it may not be ideal for swimming unless you enjoy cold water.
Although we haven't always had much luck fishing on ATLIN Lake, we’ve recently discovered some promising spots. Our return trip gives us hope to catch some trout for the smoker or to store in the freezer.
ATLIN Lake is home to numerous reefs and islands, including BC's largest freshwater island. Today, we’re heading out to explore one of our favorite islands, which offers the perfect camping setting in this natural paradise.
The expansive surface area of ATLIN Lake, combined with strong winds from the glaciers, means conditions can shift quickly, creating large waves. Today, winds are gusting at about 20 km/h, but we’re eager to find a sheltered spot on this beautiful island.
The boys also brought along their magnet to do some magnet fishing and to help clean up the campsite. Eager to discover hidden treasures after dinner, they set out with their magnet and find numerous nails and a significant chunk of metal. It’s incredible how much metal debris we uncover on trails and campsites! Our magnet fishing efforts have become an essential part of our gear, allowing us to leave these amazing natural sites cleaner than we found them-taking the “pack it in, pack it out” principle to the next level.
After dinner, it’s time for some serious fishing on ATLIN Lake! We’re using a manual downrigger to get to the right depth with our big lure, and to our delight, we catch a giant trout-the biggest we’ve ever landed! This success motivates us to fish even more, and we ultimately catch 5 trout, making a fantastic addition to our stock of moose and bear meat in the freezer to keep us well-fed throughout the winter.

Rainbow Trout: Atlin Lake is home to various sizes of rainbow trout, which are one of the most sought-after species by anglers. The trout in Atlin Lake are known for their vibrant colors and can grow to impressive sizes, making them a thrilling catch.
Lake Trout: While less commonly targeted, lake trout can also be found in Atlin Lake. They tend to inhabit deeper waters and are sought after for their size and taste.
Atlin Lake's stunning natural beauty, coupled with its rich fish populations, makes it an appealing destination for both novice and experienced anglers. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day on the water or the thrill of catching trophy-sized fish, Atlin Lake offers an excellent fishing experience.
