Haight's Wanderings

Haight's Wanderings

6 жыл бұрын

Fishing for huge fish with no one around. Three days fishing and camping in the pure, beautiful, northwoods nature. Moose, Loon, Beaver, and LOADS of fish.
Check out this long video detailing our entire trip. My father and I took a 3 day trip to Craig Lake State Park and portaged our way to a very remote lake in the back of the park. The fishing was phenomenal and the scenery just as good.
Sorry the video is so long - I got carried away and couldn't stop. Watch it in three separate segments!
In respect of local anglers I do not name any river/stream that I fish. Please respect my "no-name" policy and do not post the names of any spot in the comments. Thank you for understanding!
Leave a message or a question below! I love responding and communicating with fellow fisherpeople, adventurers, and wanderers.
Thanks for all of your support, Haight's Wanderings

The video is extremely long - sorry about that. Had so much footage that I couldn't get rid of. So, I made it into a 35 minute video.... I realize most people won't sit through a 5 minute video so I don't expect that. However, if you have the time break the video into three different viewings so you can see it all! I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video - I put A LOT of time into the filming, culling, editing, and putting it all together.

Too Long? I wished it was twice as long....awesome place and what great fishing....thanks for taking us along on the fishing side...would have loved to see more of your adventure with your dad.....and he has excellent taste in canoes too.....I have the exact same Old Town....in fact we have two of them...one green and one red....not the lightest canoe to be portaging .....awesome adventure thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind comments. The long videos take FOREVER to edit. Working full-time again makes it hard to find the time and energy to get the editing down. Didn't get much footage of my dad - he was generally doing his own thing. His canoe (my canoe) is great - it's super heavy, but not too bad to single man portage. Much easier than my ridiculous kayak.

I enjoyed the quality of your video and found this park sometime back. Unfortunately, since covid and numerous youtube videos it's getting too popular. This is a very special place for my wife and I as we are an avid outdoor couple around your dad's age and love the wildlife and trails here. After watching this I realized I fished the same spot you caught all those crappies and big northerns and caught nothing! That was in May, 2021.

U fish like i used to and i love the sense of adventure your videos have...also was very relaxing with that music. keep it up bud and maybe one day ill see u in Baraga county...my home turf. What a great video, I loved the loons in the beginning. We travel into Quebec from Pennsylvania every couple of years on a fishing trip and they might be my favorite part of the trip. Nothing beats when at dusk the lake is glass covered, the Walleye are biting, and the loons are firing up the choir.

I am a fan of long videos. Some I watch all the way through are nearly 3 hours. My preference is a little more speaking and even some strategy as you are fishing. I'm not judging here, but I once heard a statement on Joe Rogan that you can hold a viewers attention for 5 minutes, or 3 hours. He choose the 3 hour viewers. Check out Jim Baird, The Adventurer, and Jon, on Lost Lakes. They make long videos and have ginormous followings. I was born in the U.P. and live elsewhere. I never get tired of Yooper content. There are a lot of us.

Haight's Wanderings The entire wilderness area is over 5000 acres and there's 23 Lakes, there are a good amount of portage trails and also some campsites. I've only fished Twilight and Vance Lake but my goal is to see how many species of fish I can catch in 2 days, trying to hit as many lakes as I can! Most of them are classified as trophy lakes also so there are some huge fish out there!

Perhaps- sounds fun. If you want big pike though - hit up Craig Lake. Really nice fish up there. Not sure if I have caught anything 40+ when it comes to Pike. My largest was in this video - maybe like a 37-38 - didn't have anything to measure it with.

Nice video. Even if you plan to do just one more canoe camping video, you and your dad would like portaging a lot more with portage packs. They fit in the canoe nice, and you don’t have to carry everything on your paddle. Kondos makes some good ones.

Hi there - Thanks for the comment. I think we headed up in late August. The insects were VERY mild and the fishing was decent. I wish the topwater bite would have been better though. Finally got them to bite topwater on the final day when we were headed out to leave. The area is beautiful for sure.

@Marla and Warren Kaufman and Yoder Hi. I appreciate your concern for the fish. I am glad you are conservation minded with fishing. Please note that I do my best to fish baits that generally don't deep hook and I get fish back in the water as quickly as possible. Not all fish will survive but I do what I think is best to let them swim another day. Cheers!

Old grouper trick. If the fish hides in the reef, hole, or under a rock and you feel snagged. Just let the line go limp for a minute or two, he will(may) swim out think its all over, then you resume the fight. Works in freshwater too.

Very interesting at 17:35 where you talked about what fish nailed what lure. Everyone is always interested in what lures work and what doesn't work. I think its one of the main reasons people look at fishing videos, to see what lures people are using to catch most fish. Why? because there are too many darn choices and people want to cheat to find the best ones lol. Concentrate your videos on what lures work and you will be helping out a lot of newbies!

Hi there! I am glad you enjoyed it. If you have longer questions you can go to my website (in the description) and hit contact me. That will allow you to send me an email if you so desire. I was there in Craig Lake sometime in late August. I am not sure of the exact time. Two kayaks and a canoe is a LOT of portaging. The portages are intense. One suggestion is to get a canoe/kayak carrying harness/cradle that allows them to be carried easier. Another possibility is to get a packable kayak cart with wheels that can easily help the portage process. Hopefully that helped! Email me if you have longer questions as the KZbin reply format is a little wonky.

I don't think we had to reserve. We had to pay a very small fee out on Craig Lake rd., but no reserving. We just showed up. Also, yes the parking is out at the end. Do not drive Nestoria - I repeat do not go that way in. Go on Nelligan Lake road which is the main entrance to the park (farther East from Nestoria). North Nestoria will destroy your vehicle.

Hey I’m planning a trip there with my family there in early August, any tips for the pike?
@HaightsWanderings
@HaightsWanderings 3 жыл бұрын
@Jiri Duda Use metal leaders or heavy fluoro leaders so that you avoid bite offs. If the pike bite you off they will be stuck with the lures in their mouths and potentially die from it. I'd also suggest a good set of pliers, hook snips like Knipex, and a good net to release fish from.

I've fished this lake (Craig) several times and have yet to see a walleye. Any suggestions? I tried deep water jigging/slip bobber leeches morning, afternoon, and dusk. Nothing but bass haha

That's a great question - I don't target walleye and when I was there I didn't catch any. I'd say what you were doing would catch them better than anything else.

My buddies and I were there late last August and couldn't catch any walleye either. Ran into an old timer who has been fishing there for like 30+ years and he said all the walleye have been pretty much fished out, since you can keep walleye and not the pike. I did catch a 40" Northern though!

Great question - we didn't bring it with us that's for sure. Some friendly camper had left some extra at the fire ring for the next person. They had to have hauled it out there through both portages which must have taken a long time.

If fishermen kept every fish they hooked we would not have the fishery that we do. I love the taste of fish as much as anyone, but I prefer to let them go. I've caught the same fish multiple years in a row. I agree though - I wish there was a better way to do it without harming the fish as bad. I've tried to go barbless but it gets very frustrating losing fish.
