I just have to say, as a professional photographer coming from the photojournalism side of things, I've had to learn a lot of tricks in Photoshop when I got hired onto a marketing department. You've been a life saver for years. I appreciate that you put this stuff up for free and you are a very good teacher on top of things. So, thank you to you and your team.

Having worked in many of the top retouching studios, I can tell you none of them work in 16-bit. It is useful to initially process 16-bit RAW files, but they are always processed down to 8-bit for retouching. THEN, as a very last step, convert back to 16-bit, flatten, then back to 8-bit for the final delivery. What this achieves is to render your adjustment layers in 16-bit. Any banding you may have while working in 8-bit is removed in this final step.

This is awesome. Your guide on using 16-bit to avoid banding a has transformed my editing workflow. Your clear distinction between color and luminance noise, along with preserving details, is invaluable. Thanks for making complex concepts accessible and enhancing our skills!

Great tutorial as always. I would also like to learn how different blur modes work and how to decide which one to choose.
@KatiePiecrust10 ай бұрын
In most instances, Gaussian blur is the way to go. Note that older monitors/televisions tend to have difficulty displaying the full range of colors in smooth gradients and thus will likely still have a little bit of banding afterwards, something that can only be properly judged when using a newer and properly calibrated display device meant for work like this.

Just a question. At 3:21, is there a reason you created another layer with a mask, instead of painting directly onto the smart filter's mask?

hi unmesh! what should i do when surface blur is the one causing the problem? i've been working in 16bit and the image doesn't have any banding but as soon as i apply the filter, i start to see some. doesnt even matter if the original image is jpg or raw, it keeps revealing some banding as soon as i use surface blur... can you help me out on this one?
@DIGS_Photography5 ай бұрын
Do you offer any "remote walk throughs?" I've watched your vid (and a few others) regarding the removal of banding, and NOTHING is working. I need to release the photos in a month and until I figure out how to fix the issue (and potentially stop it from happening again) I don't want to retouch the other photos from the set, which will require similar retouching and therefore will likely have the same banding issue. PLEASE HELP!

"8bit" vs "8bit dithering" vs "10bit", common problem in video quality. 😅 This banding problem always happen to me if I download landscape wallpaper in JPG format, they compressed that to the bone 😅, hard to find any wallpaper with original quality in PNG format.

The problem with this is it causes Photoshop to lag like crazy when you save your file. Takes way too long. And your file size increases a lot too. A simple file like like goes over 1 GB easily. Don't work in 16 bit unless you need to.
@barrycraig11 ай бұрын
Working in 16 bit is redundant and slow. It is far, far more efficient to work in 8 bit and only convert to 16 bit before flattening the file after you've finished making any edits. You can then convert back to 8 bit once the file has been flattened.
