Sound technician here: To soundproof, you need the structure to be first and foremost AIR TIGHT. Because sound is a propagation of air molecules. After that you need the structure to be DENSE so that moving air can't vibrate the structure (transfer of momentum) and the vibrating structure can't then vibrate the air at the other side of the structure that defeats the air tightness. And thirdly in the order of importance, you want the structure to e comprised of different densities of materials because every change in density means a change in impedance and that causes reflections and less of the sound energy can continue onwards. :)

A sound expert I spoke to years ago, suggested that it wasn't simply density, but the changes in density which interrupts the sound wave over and over. So the more layers and changes in material the better. Looks like you have achieved that here! Looking good too!

Being air tight is an important factor. Also de-coupling structures to stop vibrations from traveling. Mounting the boards with silicone adhesive would be better than screws. there were also quite a few holes in the mdf which is exactly where the noise will get through.

Just did a boiler cabinet and lined it with MLV. Cuts and staples easily;killed every noise above 100Hz and client slept happily with only low rumble.

In the U.S. we have a product called Quiet Rock it's a drywall that stops sound as much as 5 sheets of 5/8 drywall. I've used it and it really effective. Prior to that we used 2 sheets of 5/8 drywall with a sheet of soundboard between.

The 5 sheets equivalent might be their claim, but unless the board is 5 times as dense (therefore 5 times as heavy for the same size) it's trying to defy physics. I'm a member of a few acoustics and studio build facebook groups and it's commonly been reported by professionals that those more expensive drywall prodycts are no more effective than thicker, regular drywall at a much lower price.

OK - I just looked up what QuietRock is made of. It is 2 sheets of drywall with one thin layer of damping material between. Yet it's 7 times more expensive than drywall. The cheap way of achieving the same thing is to instal one layer of drywall, then use a similar damping layer like deadsheet on top, then another layer of drywall with offset joins to the first layer. That's far cheaper. And you can then increase the sound proofing with yet another drywall layer and still be cheaper. Another advantage of this is also that you overlay the joins, thus insuring no week points. With one layer of Quietrock, you dont get that advantage. Real studio designers have always used general consturction materials for pro builds. Occasionally you'll find some use of dissimilar layers like honeycomb glassfibre panels to lesson transferable resonances too, only occasionally though.

Above these you used I used one layer of sound insulation rubber sheet 0.5mm thick, towards the inside of shop as last layer. It reduced inner 90 dB of circular saw noise to 30 dB outside including environmental nature noises. Only problematic part was I could not solve is the windows.

Fiberglass insulation is used by many for noise attenuation, which is entirely a waste of money. It has nowhere near the the needed density. The intumescent fire caulk is also a poor soundproofing agent, but a good adhesive. It's designed to swell when heated in a fire to seal off air passages which would let the fire migrate through a wall, generally used at plumbing penetrations. Noiseproofing compounds like Green Glue work far better. Applied to the surface of the stud, creating a vibration barrier (sound). Sound attenuation is all about vibration isolation. Dense materials work well if the layers are isolated rather than secured directly forming a bridge, like a stud will do. A dual wall as you have is also a good solution.

Forgot to ask in my previous comment regarding your shop space. Do you own your shop space or do you rent/lease your shop space? When I began watching your videos, I thought you were working in your garage at your home but after seeing this video, I realized that you are working in a shop space. I have seen other videos on KZbin where people work in shop space units. I live in Texas in the USA and we don’t have any shop space like those so I just found it very interesting.

Mass loaded vinyl is a great product for something like this BUT it is amazing how much sound will travel through the slab and there really isn't much you can do about that in your case.

Interesting video Peter, looks like that bit of wall had been previously soundproofed as well or was that just meant to be temperature insulation? The old Austins had their moments, but were no where near as bad as the cars from France and Italy, at least here in Oz. Bad memories of a Fiat Bulldozer, 20 odd bolts hold a protection plate on, all look similar so throw them in a pile and get on with it. Find that none of the bolts have the same thread, so what seems like days at the time, trying each bolt and hoping the ones that seem to fit are not secretly stripping as I wind them in, oh and did I mention it was 110 degrees in the shade with no shade and high humidity - a typical Queensland Summer's day.

Thanks Bob! It would have been mostly for heat insulation - there’s no official heating in these units - though I’m sure it did something for sound insulation - just not enough! My A40 was from the 60s originally - not the happiest of times from the British motor industry, though arguably better than the 70s! That Fiat sounds a nightmare - I had my fair share of questionable Fiats and Alfas in the ‘80s - I learned a lot, mostly about not touching Italian cars again for a king ling time! If you don't need fire rated sealant, any cheap acrylic sealant will do to soundproof. It's about airtightness not specialist sealants

I'd have overboarded with two layers of plasterboard rather than the mdf. It's probably more dense and cheaper. You could've gone the whole 9 yards and resiliently mounted them but that all costs. Would've been good to test the partition before and after too.

I enjoy watching your videos and I subscribed to your channel several months ago. As I watched the video and when you removed the wall, I was surprised to see that door between your shop and your neighbor’s. I was wondering if that was normal for that to be that way or if the door might have been put in after the wall that you removed had been placed there. At first, I thought you were going to use some foam insulation but I saw that you used MDF instead which is very cool since it is much more dense than the foam insulation and thus would dampen the noise better. Keep up the good work.

Good job, would getting a bricky for half a day with £100 of concrete commons or high density blocks would have added a lot more density. If you has got next door involved maybe you could have split the cost and may have appreciated the upgrade

Is this the first video where you use ordinary not MR MDF Peter, could be a KZbin first ? I’ve heard that you need a physical air gap as well, in effect a stand-alone separate wall with no bridging at all to prevent noise transmitting through the wooden frame. Difficult to do with an existing stud wall I guess, and I don’t know how much difference it actually would make.

I think the people who closed up that doorway must have been the same people who worked on my house. They literally took the door handle off, nailed the door shut and then wallpapered over it. Good fix though Peter, the only thing better would be to brick it up but I doubt they want you to do that.
