I don’t disagree at all about the extremes of workbenches and, indeed, workshop storage. At one end, I admire the pristine, fully organised workshops that are shown on YT - I wonder how I could ever get the time to make something as making the workshop would be, for me, a full time occupation. At the other end, you see workshops which are not well organised chaos. You are somewhere between as am I - but not near each other for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I always over- engineer everything. If I need a 1 tone press, I buy a two tonne - just in case (of what?) so, whilst my old workbench has an mdf top which is pretty beaten up, my new workbench is a full 100mm thick hardwood. That thickness is only “necessary” because a couple of my vices require a cutout of about that thickness. I would have found a way around but I had a lot of ash on the rack. Even then, I will be using a sacrificial top for a lot of task. I use a sheet of thin insulation to protect from track saw and routing and a sheet of DPC for glueing on. The whole bench which is 2600mm x 1000mm, with 100mm square legs/frame and drawers fitted underneath the worktop is massively heavy but I am fitting heavy duty castors on a lift system so that I can move it somewhat. The other reason, I guess, is that the new workshop is quite large - not enormous by many US examples, but big enough that I needed a solution to take wood from the rack to the various machines. So, I bought a mains electric hydraulic lift table second-hand and mounted it on a torsions table base with HD castors. I’ve done away with all my infeed and outfeed tables; I now use the table low to get stuff from the racks (my body won’t let me man handle large slabs or sheet anymore) and take to whatever table or machine that I need and raise it to the right level. It’s a bit of an exaggeration - but not much - to say that this is the best £200 I have spent as it allow me to carry on making. My tool and bits storage, apart from the drawers made for under the workbench, comprises office storage items bought from a form going bust. The tall storage is fitted either with drawers lower down and shelves up higher -all enclosed by tambour doors. The desk pedestals are now dedicated to systainer storage. I can stack the pedestals 2 high and, by amalgamating two drawer fronts together, it takes even the largest systainer. So, everything at the end of day can/should be put away behind doors which makes cleaning the shop much easier. As the internal door from the workshop goes straight into the kitchen area, dust prevention is essential to ensure SWMBO on-side.

£400/15=£26.66 per year. That's less than I spend on coffee in two months. I always do cost/lifetime comparisons with coffee when deciding on large tool/project investments. Even festool wins in this analysis. Great series Peter.

All very nice. I’m always impressed by the apparent efficiency of your workshop given that it’s quite small. The MFT and track saw set up looks great and seems to work brilliantly. For some unknown and long forgotten reason I made a solid Nicholson style bench in the centre of my shop. It looks lovely and traditional and is solid as a rock but actually not that useful. Around the walls I have cheap kitchen worktops as ancillary benches sitting on a 4x2 frame just like yours and they seem to have lasted pretty well. I’m looking forward to the MFT build because I might just swap out some kitchen worktop for the shop built MFT. Thanks for sharing your escapades 👍🏻

You are very unlikely to find any colored HRMDF (or any HRMDF)in the Big Box stores, you are going to have to look for places that supply cabinetry makers & kitchen outfitters. I built my mitre station out of black valchromat, pre-pandemic prices weren't so eye watering. I left it un finished for a while and it was permanently chalky looking, picked up dust like mad and marked easily, so I finished it with what I happened to have enough of at hand, osmo polyx 3088, it's left it with a really nice satin look and a lovely soft, smooth feel. I have a bench top that looks like your 'worst' one. I am actually a bit fond of it. It is a wonderful servant and I never hold back destroying it. It is surprising how many years it holds up. I do tend to lose small things againt this dazzle camouflage background, but that's probably the only downside. Once I turned the top over, to get fresh MDF, but it just didn't feel right, and in no time I was working the super beat up side again. Next to that I have an MFT, which I try to keep pristine. I've got a contrasting top on a mobile assembly table - not by design. I got some MDF from my local timber merchant, thought it looked a bit dark and felt heavier. Then I noticed "Made in Brasil" stamped on the factory edge. Decided to give it a coat of Boiled Linseed Oil for protection. It turned a rich, dark chocolate brown, contrasting nicely with the Dove Grey matt I use on all the structures. Shrugs off glue fairly easily. Bet I can't get any more !

Your workshop is becoming cosy! The fact that you chose a contrasting colour (to wood in general) is a great idea. I’m around your age and see the point :D A tidy and fairly good looking shop do make a difference, I’ve tried both, and the tidy and good looking version does give more motivation to walk in and do projects.

For making furniture-size pieces out of sheet material and the type of joinery that is appropriate for it a table saw is not very useful. Where a table saw shines is for machining small pieces to produce fancy joints and ripping long and relatively narrow pieces of timber. Having said that a table saw needs a substantial amount of free space around it to be most useful because the workpiece is moving rather than the saw. A track saw plus a small band saw and a router table would probably do 99% of what a table saw can do, albeit with the need for more jigs.
