These are great tips. I do the same with my classes and it makes a big difference. (college students) They appreciate having the connection time and just socializing. I always just check in the get feedback from the group and see what they want to talk about...after the students are with me for awhile, I let them post a question to the group to have some fun with.

Thank you, Ashlee. This is sooooo helpful. I've been teaching for community college 16 years. I know how to relax kids in person, but online has me nervous (I did hybrid--in person & asynchronous last semester. This semester it's synchronous + asynchronous, in other words, completely online. I'm really concerned about creating community. I know the kids are nervous, too. Thanks for your generous help. I'll try some of your suggestions!

Hello Ashlee, great tips for online teaching. The teaching methodology does vary from discipline to discipline . For arts, humanities and other disciplines which require a practical or project portion as part of the curricula, online teaching is a real challenge. Although there are several virtual labs available but a teacher still feels unsatisfied. Hope they will go back to their benches as early as possible after the pandemic is over.

As a first year teaching student, I really do look forward to engaging with my students and helping to shape their lives. Being a student, especially online, I have trouble focusing, because the classes seem boring. I’d love to make a change.
@VirtualTeachingPro3 жыл бұрын
I feel ya on this. I still take classes myself online to keep learning and growing as an artist and educator and I find myself getting bored in some online classes as well. It really depends upon the teacher. I tend to take classes from teachers that inspire me and align with my learning methods. Everyone learns differently and I myself need to to be engaged or I just won't pay attention to a live online class via zoom. It takes us a educators trying out different techniques and methods of teaching online and always trying something new to find what works in this moment because tehcnology is always evolving. Best wishes to you your first year as a teaching student! I've been there. It's exciting and a little nerve racking. You're going to be amazing though!

@alexrlin234 жыл бұрын
Well done, thoroughly enjoyed your tips here Ashlee. I teach at Vanguard, a private liberal arts college in Costa Mesa, so it's pretty local to all the places you're at- UCI and Saddleback. Quick question, I love the music idea. How do you broadcast the music? Are you playing the music through your computer like using Zoom's share computer sounds? Or do you have a small boom box that sits next to you as you're playing music? I'm looking at a fine balance of being able to manage the music volume while being able to allow students to hear my voice at the same time. Great job overall!!
@VirtualTeachingPro4 жыл бұрын
Hello Alex! I know Vanguard and I think I know a few people that have taught there as well. Small world 😀 Great question and I need to do a full video on this in the future to cover all options. I started at first just using a Bose speaker that sides on my shelf away from the computer and just had it on low so the volume isn't too loud and when I talk I would turn it down to very low so it was just background sound at the beginning of class and then turn it off when I jumped into the lecture/discussion/etc. I blue tooth it from my phone so I don't need to get up or move away from the desk. But now I've upgraded all of my equipment recently and I use the H6 Zoom to patch directly into my computer along with my mic so it's a direct feed with no delay. I would not suggest using Share computer sounds. Play the music from an external device other than your computer. HOpe this helps!
