The long awaited, much requested sequel to Rob Zombie's most acclaimed film The Devil's Rejects, 3 From Hell.. well.. it came out? Really didn't have the impact that The Devil's Rejects did. There are reasons for that, though a lot of those reasons couldn't be helped. Nevertheless exactly how did the movie hold up on it's own merits?

I remember going to a horror convention that Sid Haig was going to attend along with Bill Moseley before he had passed away. So as a tribute, the convention left his panel there with a lovely Rest In Peace cover art behind the table and a book for fans to sign and write a message for him. I remember there were a massive line of people writing in that book paying their respects and during the convention there was also moment of silence for him. There was no point in making this comment, but I thought it was a story worth sharing.

I was at a convention last year and Sid Haig was one of the guests. This was about two months before he passed away and you could tell he was incredibly frail, but it didn't deter him. Everyone was enthralled by the stories he shared at the Q&A panel he did with Bill Moseley.

He was one of the first people I seen as I came through the convention doors and he was by himself, we made eye contact and I was shocked because of who I was seeing. (I had never been to a convention before so it was a great experience) I knew it was Sid, but he looked completely done with everything. I smiled at him and he waved and smiled back. Can’t believe he was gone that fast though. He was great to everyone at the convention too, always a class act.

This is actually the reason that out of all of Rob Zombie's movies, I like his Halloween films the most. I know that's like horror blasphemy, but Rob Zombie has a grindhouse style that I feel I could really love, but then he has just the worst scripts. Even when he has good ideas it's bogged down by awful dialogue and vulgarity. I know most people hate Zombie's Halloween films for smearing his white trash all over the Halloween story, but for me, it's because Halloween actually has a solid story and characters borrowed from John Carpenter that Zombie's Halloween films work. The trashiness is there, but it doesn't replace the original story. The Firefly films and most of Zombie's work (other than Lords of Salem) definitely feel like the trashiness is replacing the story, and is not just an aesthetic.

When I first saw this today I didn't even know this movie exists, the Devil Rejects would have been the best way to end the series. This "they survived" explaination to lead to another film in my opinion is far feteched, personally I can't see the Cops over there in that state after showering them in a cascade of bullets, rushing thess muderers to the hosiptal and giving them emergency treatment, they were cop killers among otther things, and the cops would have just killed them and let them bleed out on the road.

I just hope that Sid Haig wasn’t pushed too hard during the production of the film. If his health was deteriorating to such an extent that the poor lad clearly had to give his all in those 5 minutes he was present in the movie, it really makes me wonder if it was alright to push for an appearance of Capt. Spaulding in the first place. Nonetheless, may the man Rest In Peace.

There were some fun moments, but the whole thing just felt unnecessary when TDR had such a great ending, with the main three characters going out in a blaze of twisted glory. Although I was glad to see Richard Brake in this, as I thought his character was the most enjoyable part of 31. I hope Rob Zombie will continue to make movies with both him, and Bill Moseley (and Sheri Moon, of course), but not following this particular movie series.

I was so hyped to see this movie and was so disappointed. The devils' rejects was so good and the actors seemed so real in the sense that they reflected real mental disorders seen in killers. In 3 from hell it was like they where trying to do the same thing but so many things felt off. The way it was shot was simply crap, The actors didn't seem that much into it. The dialog was flat and uninspired and so so much more. I think they all knew it was a cash grab. What I would have liked is to see their life in prison, Baby starts to become more of a normal person as they give her meds and therapy. Her brother breaks out in some kind of fucked up twisted way and finds a way to get his sister out. But then is shocked that she has changed and is afraid of him. Then we follow the two as the brother tries to make her into the person she was before as they run from police. Baby falls in love with a guy who her brother then kills. The brother starts to think about leaving her or killing her. He then rapes her in hopes of keeping the blood line going. In the end they are surrounded by police, He tells her some shit about the devil in all of us and then shoots him self. Fast forward and Baby has a husband and baby. Her husband is abusive and she end up stabbing him to death. This makes her snap back to who she was and she walks out of the house that is on fire, she is cover in blood, smiling as she hold the baby. The end

Too see Bill Mosely portray a member of the Sawyer family, then portray a member of the Firefly Family as Otis Driftwood, his acting to me is personally a thing of beauty. If they ever re-made a Lee Harvey Oswald movie, Bill Moseley would be my first phone call. Plus outside of films, his eyes are piercing and his voice is resonating, but he is one of the nicest men I have ever met. He is extreme intellect and down to earth as well.

Zombie brought Sid Haig back in the script, realized how sick he was, and did a last minute edit of the script, but really wanted to work with him one last time. I don't fault either men for this. I enjoyed Devil's Rejects and 3 from hell. They're fun rides to experience, and a nice send off to the Firefly Family.

I liked that little bit at the end of his final thoughts. "Oh crap . . . Ummmm . . . Summer has started hasn't it?" Yes Decker. Yes it has. For a summer theme, might I suggest . . . . "THE SUMMER . . . OF BRUCE & BRANDON . . . LEEEEE!!" As both father and son tragically died just as their respective careers were really taking off, neither of them has a filmography long enough to take up an entire summer. But by combining them and alternating between the two of them (much like how you did :THE SUMMER . . . OF FREDDY VS JASON!!!") You can cover all of their movies throughout the entire summer. Might I suggest: Week 1 (June 30): The Green Hornet TV Series (A crossover with Creepy) Week 2 (July 7): Legacy Of Rage (1986) Week 3 (July 14) The Big Boss (1971 aka "Fists Of Fury") Week 4 (July 21):Kung Fu: The Movie (1986, a made for TV movie sequel to the David Caradine series Kung Fu) Week 5 (July 28): Fists Of Fury (1972 aka "The Chinese Connection") Week 6 (August 5): Laser Mission (1989) Week 7 (August 12): Way Of The Dragon (1972 aka "Return Of The Dragon") Week 8 (August 19): Showdown In Little Tokyo (1991) Week 9 (August 26): Enter The Dragon (1973) Week 10 (September 2): Rapid Fire (1992) Week 11 (September 9): Game Of Death (1978) Week 12 (September 16): The Crow (1993) And hey! If you can't manage it this year, at least consider it for next year.

I love horror movies, have for 35 years, ever since I walked to the video store that let 12 year old me rent all sorts of them without hesitation or demands that a parent check them out instead. But Rob Zombie horror? I can't get on board. While I appreciate his visual acumen, his storytelling is just... Gross? Is that the word I'm looking for? Vile characters, endless bloodshed, and no arcs. As a viewer, I have no investment as a viewer, and after viewing I feel... Gross. Even the most notorious exploitation filmmakers of the 70's had the sense to make sure to include characters you cared about, and their evil characters got what they deserved. Zombie is just an edgy nihilist, and whatever that may be, it's definitely not entertaining. Great review as always, Decker.

Sadly, actor Sid Haig (who played Captain Spaulding) died only five days after this film was released theatrically. The movie poster featuring the black and white eyes, mugshot style photos across the bottom, and striking red font is meant to be a reference to the poster for 1976's Helter Skelter (1976). Post-production was postponed for five months due to Rob Zombie's and Marilyn Manson's tour. (at around 1h 28 mins) In the film the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida plays. This same song was requested by Bill Moseley's character Chop Top in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986). The character Carlos Perro is wearing one of Rob Zombie's iconic hats. Sheri Moon Zombie had to take archery lessons to learn how to properly use a bow and arrow. Sequel to House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil's Rejects (2005). The main characters: Firefly, Captain Spaulding, and Otis Driftwood are the same names of characters played by Groucho Marx in the Marx Brothers movies. The film was entirely shot in Los Angeles, California. Dee Wallace's character is an homage to the main character, Ilsa, in the movie Ilsa, the Wicked Warden (1977), also known as "Ilsa - The Mad Butcher", "Wanda, the Wicked Warden", "Greta - Haus ohne Männer" (original title), and "Greta the Torturer." On the film's third night in theaters, it was screened in a double feature with its predecessor, The Devil's Rejects (2005). The appearance of Wade Williams as a member of Baby's parole board may be poking fun at the fact that he played a prison warden in the TV series Prison Break (2005). Richard Brake is left-handed just like Bill Moseley and Sid Haig. Captain Spauldings last words before execution were the exact same as Ted Bundy's. "give my love to my family and friends". The front of Warden Virgil Dallas Harper's house is an exact replica of the front of the house from the original THE DESPERATE HOURS. When Otis comes up with the plan to take the Warden's family hostage to force him to free his sister, Baby, he says the plan is based on THE DESPERATE HOURS.

I love Rob. He can make a film. But, these films are like greatest hits. Recreations of scenes, or ideas. I love the family. RJ wins my vote of "whom I'd like to be killed by" in all of horror. The main three had a chemistry. That suffered here, no one's fault. Rob Zombie can dress a set, and is a wonderful photographer. He is a dependable filmmaker. His casting department is always dead on. The cinematography captures the 70s, in a way I haven't felt since the 70s. Music all good. I would just like to see more original material. I didn't mention his musical skills up above however, I dig his music. Back to this movie. I enjoyed it.

What Rob Zombie has learned is that if he doesn't have Otis he doesn't have a movie. What good movie has Rob made that did NOT have this Otis guy? Maybe Rob should do "Otis goes to Space", "Otis Takes Manhattan" or even "My Dinner With Otis?"

I mean no disrespect to Sid Haig, but it would have made so much more sense if Captain Spaulding had died in the shootout at the end of Devil's Rejects, instead of being miraculously revived only to be executed. That would have been more realistic than having all of them survive. It could have added an interesting aspect to Baby's character too, wanting to avenge her daddy in her own fucked up way.

Granted I fell off Zombie after Halloween 2, but I admire how much tighter this movie felt for him. I was disappointed by him reusing beats from Devil's Rejects, but that was handled better then I thought that it would. It's horrible about Sid Haig, but he went out on a real strong note in this. I also found the dialogue largely to be some of Zombie's best especially with the new trio and the end of Haig. Most importantly Clint Howard is ALWAYS a win.
