We went on a hiking trip to Tasmania, Australia. Rather than do the longer expansive hikes like the Three Capes Trek, we found 3 day hikes that were the best on Tasmania. These hikes are moderate, go from 2 hours to 6 and are perfect for active seniors wanting to get a little sweat going. Don't forget to get your Tasmania national parks pass to do any of these hikes.

If you ever come back, please try to get on the West Coast to Strahan and do the Gordon River Cruise with World Heritage Cruises, it takes you into the wilderness on a 4 hour cruise to the very first convict settlement of Sarah Island, that was used before they built Port Arthur. Tasmanian here, who's travelled to many countries, and I did that cruise last year, for the very first time in my 55 years , and it was the most spectacular scenery, and yet, the most emotional historical storyline I've ever heard, and all this, right on my own doorstep. Tasmania and Tasmanians get a lot of stick from the Mainland states, mostly from people who have never been there, but when I'm overseas I never say I'm Australian, I always say I'm Tasmanian and am so bloody proud to be able to. Thanks for covering my state, by the way, so many Americans I've met while in USA have argued with me that there is no such place as Tasmania, even when I show them my birthplace on my passport, NO, It’s apparently fake and just a place made up by Disneyland. I don't get upset, I find it quite funny, one woman called me communist for saying I come from a fake country.😂 so, on behalf of all real Tasmanians, please take your beautiful photos home and show as many as you can and tell them we are real.

Sad you missed the wilderness of the west coast, Strahan. Gordon and Franklyn River region is so unique.

I’m an Aussie and had not been to Tassie before we went at the end of 2022 for 6 weeks. Agree with how good the hiking is. My kids and I did the climb up to Marion’s lookout and it was definitely worth it, but it was a bit of an effort. I’m not 100% sure, but I’m going with a Pademelon at the beach. Hope you enjoy Victoria.

How good is Cradle Mtn - if you hiked on Sunday 11th Feb we were there hiking the same day as you. We did the hike out to Marion's Lookout via Lake Lilla and Wombat Pool but then went onto Kitchen Hut. The boys then hiked to the Summit whilst I went along the Face Track to the emergency shelter, over Hanson's Peak and bank down to Glacier Rock back to the shuttle bus. The boys came back via Crater Lake and Ronnie Creek. Have to admit I did find the hike over Hansons to be quite the challenge but we'd done Three Capes last year which I found harder.

@@EatWalkLearn yeah there's been jumbo flights in the past that have taken people down and fly over or what not and come back. There's also boat trips too that leave from Tassie or New Zealand.

Great info. I am so excited to hike Tasmania. We have permits for the Three Capes Hike and I'm debating whether to try for the Overland Trail or just do more day hiking. It's a bit harder to plan for the longer hikes when traveling with all your belongings. And, we will be there in December so possibly colder at night.

We originally wanted to do the Three Capes. But we only had a week, and we didn't have any gear with us. It'd require us to rent/buy, and we also didn't want to tent up. So, alas, that's why we ended up with these three hikes. The day hike out of Port Arthur to see one of the capes was absolutely my favorite of the three. You'll have fun no matter what you do. Cradle Mountain hike was super too; if I were to do it again, I wouldn't hike around Dove Lake (it got monotonous) and I'd save my distance to go to the top of the peak.
