There are so many genuises in the quilting world. I love it! I've watched Karen Brown for years and enjoy her shows. I'm adding Deb Tucker, and Megan to my watch list. lol, If I keep on like this, I'll have to have a tablet in my sewing room or I won't have time to get anything done!

I actually starched and cut a layer cake to 9.5 inches square. Bought it on a super sale, needed the variety and pattern was bias heavy. Totally worth it!

I love all the stash busters from Just Get It Done Quilts. I also saw Tiny Orchard's pattern and was amazed. Thanks for telling us about what you think are GREAT videos! I will have to watch Deb Tucker's videos.

P. S. It is worth noting (and this is why Deb's rulers/methods are so valuable) that any block with bias will amplify any errors made in cutting, marking, sewing or pressing due to the geometry (and vagaries) of angles. Using slightly oversized methods and trimming (literally slivers) down with perfect balance among all points of interest ensures that nothing is left to the vagaries noted above.

The quilters you're recommending are favorites of mine, too. Re: a quilt made from test blocks, Megan of Tiny Orchard has recommends making test blocks that you know will go together. For instance, you might have a supply of your two to three favorite colors and then each time you make a test block, you make it from that fabric and those colors. This means your test block quilt won't be a hodgepodge, but will coordinate from the outset. I think this is a great idea.

Megan, Deb (I have and recommend many of her tools and here method for oversizing anything with bias with slim trim down for perfect blocks) and Karen always have great ideas as do you! In fact, finding Karen early in my quilting journey helped me immensely. Karen has a video on the sharpener she uses. It is worth noting that sharpening depends on what you start with. It's like knives. Some knives are easily sharpened and retain the edge...others...not so much. So many gradations of material used in rotary blades, hard to know which one will take and hold an edge. The amount of rotations folks do to get an edge seems more energy than I wish to expend. I forget who, but there is a manufacture that offers lifetime sharpening on their rotary blades (but they are like 15 a piece). LeMoyne Stars: I have the RF LeMoyne but I do not care for the extra seams in that method. But I would have never been able to make a Lemoyne Star without it. However, I made myself learn how to do it the old-fashioned way as well as create all the math for all the components for any size I wish to make. It was an odyssey to say the least. Lots of time and frustration...but I finally owned it. There are many methods to put them together. It was frustrating to me that I was never able to find consistent success with person A's method v. person B's method and so on. Of course they have decades of experience.... But I finally found consistent success for my meager skill level by plucking 6 things from the many generous demonstrators: (1) Cut the diamonds with a ruler that had 4 points of measure (Creative Grids Diamond Dimension). For those that make mitered borders, this tools is also fantastic for that; (2) Sewed all the diamonds together using scant 1/4" (it encloses 1/2 the bias) (Edyta's way)--I also sewed with an 80 wt thread (Decobob) to minimize bulk in seams; Used Marti Michell Deluxe corner trimmer to mark 135 degree 1/4" dot. (3) Pressed as I sewed using a Teflon pressing mat which allows the seams to be pressed without distorting the bias or conferring shine--that goes a long way to ensuring when you sew your insets you don't have skewed corners/sides; (many admonish not to press; others say press--I had NO success without pressing); (4) Game changer: oversized my insets by ~1/2" (Nancy Roelfsema) and matched from the inside first and let overage extend to the outside and pieced using a full 1/4" , so as not to lose points and have a block that trims to the expected size; (5) Sewed triangles first, then squares--that minimizes distortion; using different series of construction did not give me good results. (6) used Shar Jorgenson's demonstrated technique of sewing off the corners--basically an X seam...it is strong an true every time with no puckers. No marking needed.

The main reason that I buy precuts is not to avoid cutting, but to get a wide variety of coordinated fabrics in small amounts, instead of having to buy a quarter yard of each. (An 8th of a yard is too narrow to get a 5” square, so you have to get at least 1/4). I would never buy precuts of a single color just to avoid cutting.

Like others I love Megan. I made the herringbone quilt. I love it. And it is not difficult. BUT. I don't think Megan came up with the idea herself. You always comment on american videos. You should check out the Brazilian girls. I know - I know - you probably don't understand portuguese, Neither do I. But this girl "Patchwork facil" made a video using the same technique years ago. She doesn't speak, just background music and showing what to do. I think we all borrow a little here and there, and that is what makes youtube great.

I buy charms mostly for the range of the fabric line that you can get in the pack without buying a fat eights for fat quarter bundle. I design most of my own quilts and will not sew without starching as I get the best results when I do starch. If you get great results without starching that is so great!

I starch everything too. I recently did a quilt that didn't use the whole 5 inches of the square and didn't starch them 🙄 because I was afraid I was going to mess up. Well, I had issues. Lessons learned, AGAIN! If the pattern doesn't use the entirety of the 5 or 10 inch, go ahead and starch it - less headaches and inconsistencies for me!

I love your videos, and I just watched the herringbone quilt video you recommended. However rather than sew the herringbone into a tube then cut it in half, wouldn’t it be easier to cut it in half with a rotary cutter then join the herringbone sides, the same with the top and bottom, work out where you would like the ‘top’ to be, cut across the quilt, then sew the excess to the bottom on the zig zag ends?

I’m confused. I would think the Deb Tucker 180 design method would not be appealing to you because of the “ oversized” blocks and waste as you refer to ALL the time how much you hate wasted fabric.. Yes Deb Tucker is a genius however it means MORE rulers / cheat sheets to buy and waste. You have to decide what is more important… the easy way with waste or harder yet less. Personally I don’t care to buy her rulers because the same block can be done differently with my own existing rulers. I like your videos but sometimes I find your opinion gets conflicting with your own opinions. Still, it’s nice to wander an opinion hearing someone else’s thoughts. Keep it up! Look forward to the next one!

Yeah. There is waste. But not much. Accuracy is more important to me than throwing some fabric out, and her rulers are accurate!

Deb's methods have minimal waste. Her method of slightly oversizing and then trimming slivers ensures perfect results. I buy rulers for blocks that I make all the time. I find that they save me time and fabric. But we all have preferences and budgets, and it is best to honor them! (I would never buy a Bloc loc ruler because I think the cost prohibitive.)
