The better the. course, the better the bunkers and the tee decks. It’s a challenge to find good bunkers to practise hitting shots out of. As a result, I try to avoid bunkers, or I tighten up whenever I’m in one because I’m not expecting good things to happen on my first two or three attempts to exit. The beauty of this video is its practicality. It addresses the fact that most average golfers never practice this shot. Use a 52 degree wedge, knock the legs out from under the ball, don’t open the face too much, square stance, and have some fun. I’ll try to remember this next time I play at a course with decent bunkers. Golf courses should not have bunkers if they won’t maintain them! A grass bunker can be challenging too. Maybe the money saved could be directed towards expanding and improving their tee decks. Just suggestions to consider.
@any1younger2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry! I wrote earlier that you were wrong because your sand and bunker conditions were too easy. HOWEVER- I’ve now tried your suggestion under competition conditions today, and can attest that you are dead right. I can now drop my 60’ that I only used for bunkers, and can add a club higher up my bag. My 56’ was perfectly capable of doing exactly the same role if played ‘without taking x3” of sand. I apologise, and thank you for helping me. I am a 63yrs old 9 h’cap and wish I’d known this x40yrs ago!
@TMar19612 жыл бұрын
I've used a square face out of the bunkers for 30+ years; it works fine and you can get spin, loft, or run out by adjusting how much sand you take. I could never hit a 'traditional' bunker shot well so I had to find another way that worked for me.
@TheRyanRanch2 жыл бұрын
Matt, if that flag stick was 3ft from the bunker, would you use a lower lofted club still, with the face open ? Or ?
@thomasesparza91752 жыл бұрын
I agree about keeping the face more square to the target. I'm been doing that for years! It's very important in those wet bunkers to help with digging into the sand!
@richdouglas23112 жыл бұрын
I use a lob wedge out of most bunkers because I can square the club instead of a hit-across-the-body-with-an-open-faced-club shot I don't get to practice enough. The point about hitting right behind the ball is great, because if you do aim for a spot a few inches behind it, you'll bottom out and dig in--or you'll blade it on the upswing. Great video.

Match your clubs to your game and course conditions. Hard packed - low bounce, fluffy -high bounce. View Bob Vokey wedge selection on You tube then get fitted. 90 %of mistakes are made before a stroke in set up (addressing the ball) and club design is the final component.
@donaldkellyman24442 жыл бұрын
Good pointers Matt.i have ignored the 2 to 3 inch behind ball and most lofted club rule.i use a 52* wedge for soft or fluffy sand and also use it for hard sand.same wedge 52*.soft sand ball ctr.of stance slight open face,done.hard sand ball slight left ctr.of stance,close face slightly,done.soft and hard sand require different applications.you will skull the ball more in hard sand with open club face,too much bounce off hard surface.

When it comes to bunkers remember the Three Gets. 1 - Get out. 2 - Get it on the green. 3 - Get it close to the hole. Any two of those three are very good!
@Jono29052 жыл бұрын
I believe you are right; don't open the face (shank time) and as you say, slice under the ball to cut off it's legs. It's the sand that moves the ball, not the club.

6:20 - watch his swing path. He's been doing it so long - he doesn't realize he does it. He swings his club across his body from outside to inside - crossing / slicing the ball. You can see the right spin when the ball hits the ground and rebounds right. Cutting across the ball in sand prevents the club from " chunking " digging into the sand and stopping. He never mentions this, but it's the most effective part of his swing. Cross your body a little with the club head. Your club won't chunk into the sand. Don't hit your shin.

Great advice. Most of the bunker advice we get pertains to pro-level players hitting out of perfect sand. I once heard a PGA broadcast pontificator proclaim that the greenside bunker shot is the easiest one in golf. Well, not for this 12-handicapper often hitting out of some very thin, dirt-like sand. I once played with a guy who putted out of every bunker (and he seemed to hit just about everyone on the course). He never was close to the hole, but he was on the green every time for a 2-putt.

Matt - Super helpful as usual. Your videos have helped with a big break through in my chipping. Question: In the sand, when we’re cutting the ball’s legs out, do we want to drag the club in a similar way as chipping? Thanks again and love the country club videos! If we end up joining one (possibly soon), you’re invited if you’re ever in AZ.

All good advice, my simple advice is to hit the sand before and under the ball to your target and practice. If the bunker has anything in it that resembles soft sand, I'm happy using a 64%,the more compact the material is in the bunker the lower the loft.

Nice video. I'd like to know more about this "sand wedge draw shot" out of bunkers. The local club champ says current ball technology doesn't favor the splash and everyone needs to learn the draw out of bunkers for most shots... He's a +3.5, worked for Titleist, etc. I saw Tiger and Dustin Johnson talking about it in a video maybe last fall that TM put out. So curious what you think of that - maybe a good video topic?

I like it. I think the biggest bunker game-changer tip for me was to set up to the ball like I'm sitting on a stool (staying low and forcing a shallow swing) and _not stopping_ my swing - i.e. swing right through, not stopping at the ball.
