As someone who actually does order acrylic enclosures out of the US (even though I do get dinged on the customs charges), I certainly appreciate you bringing this company to my attention. It's not just these kinds of enclosures that can be hard to find up here. I'm jealous of those Container Stores you have all over the US whereas here I pay a premium even for AMAC boxes. I'll definitely be giving Primal Fear a look so thanks to both you and them :).
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
I know that there aren't a lot of folks up there producing them, so when Jeremy contacted me, I was ecstatic to be able to tell people about these. Yeah, I've realized that we are quite fortunate in the types of containers we get down here. Good luck and let me know if you pick any up...they've got some beautiful stuff!

@@TomsBigSpiders It took me a while to get off my a** and do it, but I did just order some so I'll come back and comment once I have them. Forewarning that the shipping costs can be high; however, it's still highly favourable for me as compared to paying in USD and then dealing with customs.

@@TomsBigSpiders I received my enclosures and am quite pleased. The sling enclosures are excellent with their sliding magnetic lid (and a better size than 2x2x3 I'd argue). I'm smitten with the 3x3x6 arboreal enclosure though...both front and top openings, and I ordered a custom fit 3D printed background with it and it has a integrated hide and feeding bowl and I love it. I'd definitely recommend Primal Fear Tarantulas to Canadians looking for enclosures and related products. Jeremy is a pleasure to deal with. He was backordered on larger terrestrial enclosures but I'll be giving them a whirl when I order next.

Wow ! It's great to know that we Canadians have access to these nice looking enclosures now. As for the Avic's surprise move, I'd chalk it up to a misplaced feeding response. My T. albo did the same once when I tried to nudge her away so I could pull out a bolus in the open. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

Hey, Luc! I was so glad when he emailed me and I realized that he was in Canada. I've had so many Canadians bemoan that they don't have the acrylics up there, and I was hoping that someone would eventually fill that void in the market. They are quite nice, too! And I agree completely. After rewatching it, it seems that I "woke" it up with the first touch, and then got the feeding response with the second one. Thanks again, bud!

@@TomsBigSpiders Beautiful girl you have ! I just got my Metallic Pink Toe two months ago and she's 3 1/2 " I think Luc is right. It looks like a feeding response. Mine did the same thing with a brush. Then she settled down and I could prod her in the direction I wanted her to go, but unlike yours that went up the catch cup quickly mine took her own sweet time. She hasn't webbed up the encloser at all. just hangs out on the walls until she comes down to almost the ground and wait for a cricket. She has an amazing feeding response and a glutton. MY girl !

People who feel the need to immediately comment about how "it's so much better and cheaper to do [x]" are ANNOYING. You have the time, tools, and talent to fabricate your own stuff? Congratulations, that's awesome. Some people don't. I'm not sure why some people always consider that to be such a personal affront to them that they have to comment about it in the rudest and most condescending ways possible. On a much more pleasant note, that is a gorgeous Avic avic. I can't get enough of those pink toes!

Hey Tom! Always thrilled to see a new vid from you poppin' up! =D I love my versicolor, she's so active and walks up my hand without protest. I've been keeping her in an aquarium with a top mesh wire lid, with lots of plants (chlorophytum comosum aka spider plant, fittonia aka nerve plant, tradescantia aka wandering jew). After I left for more than a month (long holiday abroad), she was still doing perfectly fine. I think the slow-release moisture from real plants really helps. I almost never mist and she rarely ever drinks from her bottle cap, and is always out. These species of plants tolerate low watering, low light levels, whuch makes them pretty good for terrariums. Probably better than pothos vines imo. I don't use any artificial lighting either. Ofc it won't work in a basement with no windows. Another big + for these is that you can propagate them very easily. Buy one, get dozens for free! The less I water, the better the mini ecosystem works, actually. ;-)

Im one of those people that just havent had good experiences with Avic's or C. Versicolor. My first versicolor was a 1/4" sling. Followed the latest care to the best of my knowledge but it never ate or even made a web, basically did thrive at all. Died in about two weeks. Second Versicolor also about 1/4" (waaay more ventilation) never webbed, ate once, died in about 3 weeks. Only two T's ever lost. I currently have an Avic Avic that has built two web tubes, us eating, and has molted yesterday.. pretty much everything you want your spiders to do. Very happy. Its a little older than the two Versicolors that i lost. Its right at that stage where it just molted out of its light colored legs and officially has the toes. Its maybe a lil over 1". Im soo happy about this spider. If i try the C. Versicolor again. Ill get maybe a juvi and try maybe lower the moisture. Im thinking, if it was my fault, maybe the moisture was a bit much. Plenty of vents.

So about 25 years ago when i was in the Brazilian Amazon, we would literally see these guys everywhere and often on the side of big trees that was flooded by the river and where tons of water was flowing just 3 feet below the spider. But the trunk was dry though and this was in the raining season. The humidity was out of this world. I remember sweating places iv never been sweating before. Especially on the upper lip LOL. But anyways... Seemed like there was always good air flow where these guys were living and so it makes sense with the high ventilation requirements. Now iv not kept these guys for a few decades now and so im no expert on these at all. But i do remember i used to keep mine pretty much like u described here. So great and informative video 👍
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hey, bud...great to hear from you! I can't tell you of how jealous I am of you seeing so many species in the wild. I think that airflow part is what most people miss. I think that they could be kept very moist in captivity if a) the enclosure was super well ventilated and b) if there was a fan blowing air around the room. The problem is, most don't give them enough ventilation. Thanks so much for chiming in! I LOVE hearing about their conditions in their natural habitats!

@@TomsBigSpiders Hey mate. Iv been trying to reach u all day due to a new discovery iv done. Could you check your email ASAP and let me hear your thoughts. But yes, it was an amazing experience. We saw so many critters, but took most of it for granted because me and my friend was just basically kids on our first solo trip in our lives at 19 years old. Wish we would have had smart phones back then. Would have been so much easier to record and document all the critters we saw. When your back and neck is full of insect bites and you are craving some real food and are constantly semi dehydrated, then you dont have much energy left to pick up a big analog camera and go record stuff while sweat is dripping into your eyes lol. But i def want to try one more time before i get too old. And yes, i agree on the humidity/ventilation part.

Thank you for sharing. I just bought an avicularia about 3 weeks ago she is a purple pink toe though beautiful little baby. Anyways I have a humidity reader in the enclosure but I’m not sure as to what around is a good humidity for them since you said not to much. Do you have a number to be in between or do you just eyeball it? I over filled her water dish a little and the humidity is at 55-65 which is not what recommends when i look it up but that good be old info as well and someone that doesn’t know too much about them or keeps them so I wanted to get your opinion so I can care for my girl correctly. If I don’t over flow her dish it is usually in the 40s but I have drilled a bunch of holes in it for cross ventilation so it may be too many? I think she is fixing to molt so I want to make sure everything is good humidity wise before hand so she doesn’t loose legs or worse die. I can send a picture of her if need be so make sure everything is okay with her enclosure just to get some good advice on whether it correct or not. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.

Hi, Ashley! That's awesome! Personally, I would take that humidity meter and toss it. I currently keep over 200 tarantulas, and I NEVER monitor the humidity in the enclosures. Give her a good sized water dish, moisten a corner around the dish, and make sure that there is a LOT of ventilation. The majority of folks who I hear from who end up with dead Avicularia species are fixating on these "ideal" humidity requirements that are total nonsense. Good airflow is more important. Good luck!

When I had an Avic. avic He escaped and was lost for a week. He emerged right above my bedroom light switch. Right on feeding day. It was my first arboreal Tarantula, and that was the only enclosure that kept getting poop all around it. Looking back I would have added real plants to the enclosure and spring tails.
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Well, that was nice of him! I'm so glad that it had a happy ending. If if the enclosure was moist enough for spingtails, it might be too moist for that species unless the enclosure was super ventilated.

Beautiful Girl. These or at least a similar Avicularia Species are the reason why T's are called Vogelspinne in German. Because of an etching made by Maria Sibylla Merian wich shows a Avicularia spec.feasting on a Hummingbird. Actually I don't keep one but I always liked their slow and kinda thoughtfull way of crawling...and of course their cute pink toes.

Hey Tom! I have a question. I lost an H pulchripes (1.75 in dls) two days ago to a bad molt. "Todd" molted right side up and only his abdomen popped off, his carapace looked like it was trying to come off, but didn't. Idk if it was failure to thrive or what. I had him for almost 5 months, he was in premolt when I got him, so he didn't eat. Then he molted and he ate maybe 3 times after, and hadn't eaten since, even though I offered. He had 2 water dishes and I occasionally sprayed his web. I think he didn't have enough moisture to molt, but I can't make him eat. I know my enclosure and stuff was fine, I had it looked at by several people. Is this just bad luck or failure to thrive, or just a bad molt?
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hi, Callie! Oh no...I'm so sorry to hear that! If he didn't eat and was in premolt when you got him, IF there was something wrong with the care, it happened before you got him. It's possible that he was kept too dry before you got him. Generally once they are in premolt, it can be too late to start giving them water. That said, it could have just been a bad molt.

@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hi, Lauren! The adults can sometimes take a while to settle in. Does she have adequate coverage in the way of fake plants (or real)? Has she taken up in her cork bark or started to web a bit? @TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hi, Jennifer! Is the Mexican red rump a sling? If so, it may just be in premolt. I usually don't start to worry until after a couple months. Just make sure that you moisten a corner of the sub. If the burrow entrance is open, try leaving prekilled prey at the mouth of it. If it takes the prey item, it's still eating; if it doesn't, it's likely in premolt.
@jenniferdailey2826 Жыл бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders hi yes it is a sling. I think it packed itself in the burrow. I left it open and now I noticed it’s closed so I think it’s in there and I think you are right it may be in pre molt. Thank you so much for responding. Just another panicked T parent here!

He just built himself a funnel web, his abdomen is healthy size, he's not dehydrated, he has proper cross ventilation, and enclosure temps are correct. He just won't eat. I can't find any info online regarding my current situation. Should I be worried?
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hello! You say "he". Is it a mature male or an older male? If his abdomen is a healthy size, he may just be in premolt. Were you feeding him a lot or often before he stopped eating? If you feed tarantulas a lot in a short period, it can lead to an extended premolt. If water is available and the abdomen is not small, I wouldn't worry yet.
