The Black Hole happens with us stand up fighters too, no matter how big the place is, sparring couples will always bump into each other. It's weird!

Another weird thing I found is when we're shrimping as a warm up, I always try to do it correctly but the guy behind me always runs into me. This happens because the guy behind me tries to shrimp as fast as possible in what can only be described as a seizure

In my experience there is so much people with no space awareness. Sometimes in sparring there is someone backing in on us from the side and my sparring partner is almost trying to attack me through the other person. It is when you signal like "We should move" they are like "oh yeah good idea!" 🤣

I'm surprised how seldomly we crashed and bumped into each other back in wrestling practices. Plenty of people in the room too. Heck one time my teammate drove me 20-30ft while I sprawled on his takedown, until we ran out of mat where I went down, somehow we didn't cross anyone else's path on the way there. I'm almost certain he did it because he was tired, and was trying to hurt me just a bit so I would want to take a break, because he kept asking me if I was ok and saying that I can take a break if I'm hurt lol. I was smaller, and I think he didn't expect going with me to be as tough as it was. He also taught me this slick/rough roll that works great for peeling off someone who has the legs in. Also works when they're trying a rear naked choke, I'd tell that story too, but I know Ramsey has heard it once before.

Hey coach, question for you I'm a BJJ practioner and ex karateka, and I have a mindset conundrum. I tend to get obsessed with improving my skills, getting fitter and stronger, drilling and sparring, all to get better at grappling. It is unfortunately an unavoidable reality that I can never be professional as I started too late and cannot dedicate my whole life towards the sport. How do you try to reconcile with wanting to improve and grow when faced with the reality that there will always be people who outclass you in every way?

I thought you were going to mention bathroom feet, when people go to the bathroom without sandals and just go bare foot then return to the mat. Some people miss the toilet. When i mention bathroom feet to some of the students, they say "ive stepped on worse", missing my point 😅
@NDOhioan
@NDOhioan 3 ай бұрын
In fairness, the greater BJJ culture around belts pretty strongly pressures students to fixate on them. Too many people in Jiu-Jitsu treat belts like a glorified Caste System. That doesn't *excuse* belt obsession, but I don't think it's unreasonable to say the "you must be [X] belt to have an opinion" culture *really* doesn't help things.

I was reading up on some stories on old Judo tournaments and why they had to change the rules, and wow werensome people extreme. A common problem was ofcoursensome guys not bathing or waahing their gi for days, and getting use to their own stink, so when they finally came around, they would smell pretty badly, causing the other guy a bit of discomfort. Than ofcourse the stubble thing which is kind of funny. Some guys would grow enoigh stubble to sandpaper up against another lol. I wouldnt doubt that the paul pheonix look came from an extreme judoka that decided to stand his hair striaght up for whatever reason. Maybe a softer kanding if he was coming down at a bit of an angle. The aftermath of that would be fasion model runway ready hair. Still cant believe that even the Tekken people got it wrong and said he practiced judo and karate when its actually judo and bajiquan, which ironically almoat fits a buddy of mines way of fighting, but he had no idea what bajiquan was. Those step in vertical punches can rock a person pretty good. Really all he does is some boxing where he keeps his hands low, and throws alot of quick straight body jabs, and uses head movement and distance for his heigh defense, one in a while shooting a vertical fist diagonally upwards afte their shot as a counter. He just came apon the stepping punch on his own. Than once they get close, he prefers to rely on his judo to take them down. Hes not much of a wrestler. If i were tonever call him something, itd be a lazy boy fighter. Keeps his hands down and only resorts to judo when someone gets close. Doesnt like to do much work. Im subscribed to a catch wrestling channel, alliance catch wrestling, and the coach there also did a bit of sumo by the sounds of it. Im pretty conflicted with some of tbe things they try to teach. If you wanted to take a look at his thought on the arm drag, which he uses a sumo reference for, im really not sure if its viable for everyone if you wanted to take a look at it Ramsey and compare. However, one thing he was going on about in a post he made, was the guilt that people should feel which either doing a neck crank kr wrist lock in practice. For a long time, there were some bjj gyms, atleast around here that really looked down at leg locks and thoight anyone that did them were monsters. Now alot do them in their gyms, and have even found great variations from jiujktsuka from abroad.aslong as someone has control and respect, is their any real dirty submission still? Id put a muscle crusher as dirty before a wrist lock or neck crank.

my biggest gripe is blue belts that want to gain face and roll like their life depends on it during warm ups. Yeah buddy, i'll let you have your chance to tap me, but let an old guy warm up a little bit. that, and the "training partners" that try to kill you every round. that's how you create a shtty team, y'all. if you've got a gym full of cheap shotters, injuring all the newbs, then you've got a team that will never put together a winning record. number one problem in bjj right now (besides lame guard pulls) is bad training partners. i turn more people away today than i ever thought i would. i'm not spending a minute coaching losers. and the dudes that train like that all turn out to have records you can't brag about. if you want to have a gym war, cool, but you're off the team after i kick your ass.
