Check out the Video Description to find links to the Oil and Filter and Tools I use in this video. Always remember, to start your bike and let it run for at least 5 minutes before you change the oil. Warm oil drains better, pulls out sediment better, and with "Dry Sump" engines like in our Harley Davidson motorcycles, the oil tends to "sump" down into the engine case over time which will prevent you from draining all the oil from the bike unless you start the bike to pump the oil up into the oil tank before you drain it.

Always remember to do it correctly, start your bike and take a good ride to bring it to operating temperature, 5 mins isn't going to cut it.

@@ajwinstonator8652 running a bike for that short amount of time actually allows water vapor to form, but it won’t be hot enough to evaporate it. This leaves the water vapor in your engine. Which needless to say, isn’t good. You should never start your bike if you’re not going to run it for at least 15-20 minutes. That way it gets hot enough to evaporate any water vapor that has formed. Not being condescending. Just something every Harley owner should know to help their bike last.

Do NOT use a socket on the transmission drain plug. There is a torques head that you use on the bolt head. The plug is slightly offset of center between the absorbers so using a socket hits the absorber and angles the plug risking cross threading. Ask me how I know.

Great video. I have a question about another drain plug that is located under the front of the 06 fatboy on the right hand side. The plug is round and takes a 1/4" allen wrench to get it out. I am wondering what I accidentally drained by removing this plug. It looked like engine oil.
@JayWCase5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the drain for the engine crank sump. No harm done. It is not necessary to remove that plug, but every time you do you will risk stripping out the threads. The Harley Davidson Twin Cam engine is a dry sump engine, so it is not necessary to drain the sump, but you did not hurt anything. The small amount of oil that you drained from the sump was replaced immediately the next time you started the bike.

Jay, I can't thank you enough! I've been riding an 83 GPz 750 for the last 13 years and as of last Friday have finally been able to fulfill a promise to myself. That would be my 2004 Fat Boy. Your explanation of using 75W/140 instead of engine oil indicated I probably have engine oil in the transmission. I'll be changing all three fluids very soon! Now, when checking oil level, do you check it with bike standing up or on the kick stand? Thanks again for such a clear and easy to follow guide! You are awesome!

Good vid. Appreciate you. Do you ever profile the oil filter?
@paulguidry16204 жыл бұрын
Prefill”
@JayWCase4 жыл бұрын
Good question Paul, No, i don't pre-fill the oil filter in this instance. Because the oil filter is installed horizontally on this engine, pre-filling the oil filter results in half of it spilling out during the filter installation process. Because synthetic oils leave a protective oil film on friction surfaces, and because this filter has a relatively small capacity, there is no harm done to the engine while it is dry-running for the 3 or 4 seconds it takes for the oil pump to fill the oil filter. Thanks again for the question.
