But with a baitcaster, I can work it faster by getting in and out of different areas without having to flip the bail twice each cast. 1 thumb vs 2 hands function.

I work at Cabela's and I have customers who are new to fishing who buy light action spinning combos and ask me if a 2oz punching jig would be good to throw and catch big fish. I always chuckle a little bit because I think it's cute. Now I have a video I can direct my customers in the fishing department to why that's not a good idea! I I love when they buy a pflueger trout combo and ask me if a huge musky crankbait is going to work well on the water... I always chuckle because it's sooooo funny! It's a reminder also that people are not as informed as me in bass fishing, and I need that reality check when working there. Another one that gets to me when working is the guy who says he is a seasoned bass angler and catches huge "donkeys" all the time but doesn't know what a Texas rig is....

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzbin.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

In my experience bass anglin i noticed that the spinning reel is ideal in flight in moment sight fishing wheras baitcasters are definitely the ideal bass rod for overall bass fishing. The reason being that spinning reels always make a slack in the line after casting. I hate that. Also sometimes if youre not careful and cast hard not moving your finger in time you could snap your lure off. Bye bye $8+. Another big issue with spinning reels is line coiling upon casting which makes the cast inefficient. In order to maximize efficiency with the spinning reel is you need to use braid which requires a fluorocarbon leader because braid is visible. That means a big dent in the persons wallet. A baitcaster with monofilament takes care of all those issues. 1 picks up line quick and no slack. 2 no pressure on line to cast the lure. 3 long distance efficient casts. You can get so profficient with the baitcaster you dont have to thumb it. I never do. Hopefully these tips opened the eyes to some anglers out there. God bless.

I think the underlying theme here is choosing the right rod/reel to make sure you can 1) tell when you have a bite and 2) land the fish. Anyone that has fished a jig on a spinning rod back before they ever bought their first bait caster I'm sure can attest to that! Thanks man - good info to share

Tyler, you’re an educator! Your “handle” should be “The Professor.” I’m returning to fishing after years off due to my job. In a fit of irony, my return to fishing is from the symptom of why I departed; time and sanity. I now clearly understand how very little I know about bass fishing! That’s a powerful thing to understand. You’re clearly one of the most intelligent and experienced KZbin Anglers. As now my trusted professor, I’ve binge watched most of your videos and Lew’s is certainly the beneficiary of your quality videos as I’ve recently spent a small fortune. They’re certainly smart for sponsoring you! Brother, I think you need one of 2 things. Either 1, you need a “cube chart” that can help us match conditions (season, open water vs grass, water temp, weather), to bait to match line, rod, and reel combos. Or, second, and what I recommend - and Lew’s would be smart to pay for this- you need an App of your own that Anglers can go through a series of “if - then” questions to vector then into the chart you’d need anyway from the first to make that happen. You can patent this ($$$). Since I downloaded BassForecast at your recommendation, maybe matching up with them, since they’ve got the conditions. Maybe an option in the app is they build their profile and input their rod, reel, and line combos and the output is the bait based on the conditions I previously stated. Sponsors brands can sponsor that ($$$). PS. Great proposal video. I don’t know how or why the heck I got sucked into that video but after binge watching everything I felt I not only knew you but owed it to you! Keep it up! Life is good! You got a great thing going! Bright skies ahead for you!

Thats the difference between a spinning reel and a bait caster. Spinning reel can be used for anything if the rod weight is right. A bait caster can't because they are terrible with lighter lures. Especially into the wind. My favorite rod, bait caster under the right conditions.

Paired with the fastest spinning reel made. It’s like 7.2.1 I believe. 30lb carbon drag. It seems to have plenty of power and speed as It has handled a few 5 and 6 lb bass easily.

Love the explanation of the why you use what you use and the difference between the rods but honestly didn't really explain the differences from using the reels, I've always used spinning rods and want to understand the hype over baitcasters because I have no issue running a little heavier of line on the spinning, I just make sure the weight of the lure or bait isn't unbalancing the rod, and you can get rods rated exactly the same but one's a spinning and ones a baitcaster

If you’re just a normal person who gets to go fishing here and there, just get yourself 2-3 rods, not 7. Even if affording 7 rods isn’t an issue, transporting and hauling those rods around is completely impractical unless you have a legit boat. Start off with an “all around rod” by getting a 7+/- foot medium to medium heavy rod with a fast action, casting or spinning as your main rod. Then get yourself a tiny light or ultralight power spinning rod at around 6 feet long. Some go as short as 5’ and some go as long as 7’, but that depends on how noodley you want it. Get a 1000 size spinning reel for it with 4-6-8 pound mono on it or 8-10 pound braid with a flouro leader. This is your light weight/finesse/drop shot/pan fish setup. Then get a heavy rod for frogs/flipping/smaller swimbaits and you can even use it for some catfishing or for musky too. Look for a 7’ to 7’6” heavy or medium heavy rod with a fast tip. Use heavy braid on this one. For normal people or avid fishermen who don’t have a boat yet, these 3 rods will cover mostly everything: a small, a medium, and a heavy. You might have to switch lures occasionally, but hauling 7 rods around every time is absurd unless you have a boat and they stay on it.

a baitcaster is not only more comfortable, accurate and has more feedback than a spinning rod but also much more fun and rewarding. baitcasters feel like the rod and reel are one piece with only the reel handle being the other because you can simply press a button to release your spool while a spinning rod feels like 3 different things being the rod, bail arm and reel handle all being awkward to use and recast once you upgarde to a baitcaster you never go back

Same. I mean I haven't been fishing for 40 years, but I've been at it a while and I'm getting to the point where I can basically lift the bail and all that one handed and cast through trees and all that. And when he says you can't use one for everything and expect to catch fish, I don't really buy that. I mean, yeah I know what it's like to not have an ideal setup but I've also caught a whole ton of fish on Jerry rigged setups that I figured out last minute because I didn't really have a whole lot of stuff.

I mean to be completely honest these past couple decades spinning reels and spinning rods have undergone a lot of technological advancement. So now all the downsides that people point out for spinning reels and spinning rods don't really apply anymore. And here's why, the first argument is that spinning reels don't have as much drag as baitcasters but I beg to differ. My small 3000 size spinning reel has 33lbs of drag the highest I've seen a low profile baitcaster go in the same relative size is 20lbs of drag. And this is because they're still making advancements in spinning reel technology as far as how much drag it can handle whereas baitcasters are pretty much set in stone these days. The second argument is that spinning reels can't handle heavy line but ever since braided line came out that's not true anymore. Because 50 lb braid is the same diameter as 12 lb monofilament and spinning rods have increased in their monofilament rating ever since braid came around. And a general rule is that due to the fact that braided line breaks exactly at its pound test rating and monofilament tends to break 10 lbs heavier you can typically get away with 50 lb test braid on a 40 lb test monofilament rated spinning rod for example. Which is another point I meant to make, ever since the invention of braid the monofilament rating on spinning rods has gone all the way up to 50 lb test instead of just 30 lb test. so they are a lot more heavy-duty now then they ever have been a perfect example of this are the whisker seeker rods which are made for trophy sized catfish and are rated for 10 lb test to 50 lb test monofilament. Another argument they have is that baitcasters are better for live bait because they allow you to free spool and so the bait can move around and travel. But if that's something you want then just get a spinning reel with a baitrunner feature which has a second drag on it so that you can free spool on a spinning reel. Basically baitcasters are becoming obsolete because they don't seem to be advancing them anymore so now spinning reels are catching up anyway that's my 2 cents on the subject.

I just find that when I’m hooking up with 1.5lbers, or smallies instead of largies, with a bait caster and medium heavy rod, I find myself ripping the hook sets a lot. ALSO, for kayak fishing by, I greatly prefer spinning rod/reel because I’ll tend to lose fish when they get up close if they try to pull under the kayak if I’m not using a spinning reel and spinning rod with good action

The only topic you miss what is the difference between a spinning reel drag and a baitcaster drag. But then again I think you were just mainly talking about rods. Spinning Reel will always have the better drag system as of now. Someday that may change in the future (:
@timyogerst43492 жыл бұрын
I agree that drag / brake mechanisms also make a big difference in reel selection. A spinning reel with front-facing drag can be very difficult to adjust when the fish is on a run! Baitcasters will likely have a side-loading drag adjustment, but you might have to adjust it more often (especially if you rely on the drag more than your thumb when casting).

Hey Tyler I have a baitcaster and a spinning rod and I have been wondering what line to put on them, what do you think I should put on them? Should I put Braid on my baitcaster and mono on my spinner?
@stclairstclair Жыл бұрын
This made perfect sense, You can't jig a 1/16 oz minnow on a bait caster any better than trying to drag a 1/2 oz spinner bait on a spin casting rod.

Do you mean she thinks you will get in trouble by fish and wildlife because you brought more then 2 rods to fish with? I believe it's only an issue to actually have more then 2 rods in the water at the same time, you can bring 100 rods to the water as long as 2 are only used at once. If that makes sense. This is what I understand anyways.

Awesome! The double uni is what I lost yesterday but it was one of those that I should have just retied... My thoughts on keeping fish from jumping is to turn the rod so that it runs parallel to the water and keep my tip down. Not sure if that does anything just something I do.

Great video. I have 2 rods. Med bait caster for catfish/ bass. Ultralight spinning for Crappie to bluegills. Best advice bait caster for heavy lures and line winches with ill regard. I’ve caught 10Lb cats on an ultralight 5” rod 6lb test 😂. Not sure I call it fun but it requires patience and finesse. It’s actually fun 😂

very informative, so basically we need a light , medium and heavy spincast outfit and the same goes for the baitcaster??? unless i travel far, i am limited to small lakes and ponds. i own a light rod and a medium rod. have not purchased anything heavy. i do have a saltwater spin outfit but i do not like salt water fishing.
@TylersReelFishing2 жыл бұрын
To a certain extent, yes is the answer to your question. Depending on where you fish though, and what your bodies of water are like, I would probably recommend getting a few more lengths and powers, or getting less diversified, depending on your situation like I said

Now a button rod is to be treated like a spinning rod in function as far as lures go .... Generally light weight and finesse use for bass fishing btw i hate using spinning rods but i use 1 just for insane light weight drop shots with a live worm on it for the Louisiana summer

As long as your reel, rod, line, and lure are set correctly with each other and for the fish you're catching, it doesn't matter if you use a baitcast or spinning reel. They make both in every size imaginable as well as the rods. The only thing I use a baitcast reel for is heavy saltwater. We are talking about 250lb+ braid and lots of it. You can use a spinning reel for anything from crappie to shark. One is not better than the other. It is personal preference completely.
@TylersReelFishing3 жыл бұрын
There is definitely a lot of crossover, but I will stand by this till the day I die: MANY bass fishing techniques are far superior done on a bait caster than on a spinning rod. It’s blatantly obvious by looking at any pro angler‘s boat deck, to see that they are all using what is most efficient for them... most of that being a baitcaster. Again, BASS fishing. I know nothing about salt water, and this video was not about salt water
@samuelmorton44223 жыл бұрын
@@TylersReelFishing Possibly for BASS fishing it is much better, not saying you are wrong, but it is only one species. Not just limiting to saltwater, there are many freshwater species, such as crappie which are easy to catch with a spinning reel. Maybe bass specifically is best with a baitcast, but I use my setups for multiple types of fish. Most people, I included, don't have the money to have 1, 2, or more setups dedicated to 1 specific fish.

I told all this to my wife before I saw this video and showed this to her recently, she still thinks the 8 I have are too much. I usually only take 3-5 when bank fishing but one thing I try to do is make those rods versatile. Also I keep in mind what kind of fishing I am going for and I can always return to the car to switch out rods as the day moves on. Just bought a new one for chatterbait and spinnerbait fishing thay can also do other lures. Made that purchase after researching what kind of rod to get from your specific videos 😁 keep up the good work here 🤙🏻 P.s. can we get an updated spinnerbaits tip video? Go down the rabbit hole a bit 👍🏻

You can cast as light as 1 gram lures on a baitcaster if you just buy a baitcaster that is meant to do that. The problem is that baitcasters that are meant to cast light lures, either cost a lot or are only available In Asia (mainly Japan).
