Holy mass is not a stage show where the priest perform to entertain people or to make them feel satisfied.. It's a holy sacrifice offered to God the father and the sacrificial lamb is our Lord himself. So ad orientum is the right and true way of worshipping the God. But even some dioceses in my Eastern Catholic church practice versus populum after V2. I thank God that my bishops are strong ad orientum supporters. I wish from the bottom of my heart that all Catholics return to ad orientum worship.

@@terrynelson2373 I’m also 73 and especially during Lent we children would be sent to early morning Mass on weekdays before school. We then went straight on to school I think, rather than go back home for breakfast. We probably had a piece of toast with us to eat on the way to school as we would have fasted since the night before. We felt so holy getting up early to walk to the local Church, which was about a 15min walk from our house. The school was near us, on our way back home. I’m in Scotland and our Faith was such a big part of our lives.

Nearby larger parishes probably did back in the day as they had several priests. Back then, most parishes had at least 2 priests. Mine had only a single priest but there were sung Masses on those days.

@Matthew Joseph Of course! I can barely remember this from roughly the mid-60s (my age was in the single digits). Parishes within the diocese would take turns "hosting" a 40 hour period of exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (commemorating the 40 hour period from Christ's death to his resurrection). Some parishes had continuous adoration day and night. I believe my small parish reposed the Sacrament at night. It opened with Mass and Litany of the Saints. On the second day, Mass was said on a side altar while the Blessed Sacrament was exposed on the high altar. The devotion closed with the Litany of the Saints, Eucharistic procession, and Benediction. It was an impressive ceremony to my young self. Several priests, lots of altar boys, and the Knights of Columbus participated. I had a bird's eye view from the choir loft (my grandmother was the choir director). Of course all of this was labelled "pre-Vatican" and the devotion stopped here, but is maintained in traditionalist parishes.

I am so Blessed to find you!!! I was born and raised Catholic, born in 1969. My parents took me to Latin Mass sometimes, but not regularly. I remember loving it but was very young but didn’t understand it, but I remember the incense. In my 20’s I rarely went to Church In my 30’s I was introduced to the Evangelical Church by my husband and his family. I adopted the Pentecostal Church was re-baptized in my 40’s, but after years of adopting my new faith, I still felt empty at times. Although, I did discover the Bible, which was good! Through my changing of political views I went from being very Liberal to Conservative, and through your channel and others very similar, like Remnant TV, I rediscovered my Faith! I learned that all my years considering myself a Catholic and a reformed Catholic, I knew nothing about the 2nd Vatican Counsel and a lightbulb or candle was lit in my soul! All this time I’ve been looking for what already was introduced too, “The Latin Mass”. I am planning on attending a Mass this week but not too many out there anymore. However, I was able to find a Church in Yardley NJ about 45 minutes from my home and after I do some more research and have a veil, I will be making that trek! Thank you for giving me my Faith back!!! I cannot wait to attend my first Latin Mass as an adult now, middle-aged, however it’s better than never. I still don’t understand why my very Catholic parents never explained to me why, what, or how the new order of Catholic Mass was? I am so taken back that my wonderful Godly parents never explained to me what a real Catholic Mass was and why it’s important? I forgive them as they were rule followers and not ones to go against the grain, but man I wish they would have, how differently my walk with God would have been and perhaps my Faith wouldn’t have strayed from the one, “ True Church! Hallelujah & Amen! 💗

My first TLM mass was a low mass. Didn’t know what was going on. I hated it. Went to a low mass again... I hated it.... months later I attended the high mass for the first time... I cried... went to high mass again now I can follow along the mass better with the missal. Attended the low mass and I can follow along with the cues better. I just love the TLM so much now. Been attending the TLM and praying the old divine office exclusively for almost a year now. Much better than NO mass. I knew the Byzantine rite Divine Liturgy before the TLM due to my exploration with Eastern Orthodox. I thought I would like the Byzantine rite more, but I think I prefer TLM.

Christmas Memories!! Back in 1958 was the head of the altar Boy Society at Holy Name Church in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. In those days the Priests had to celebrate three Christmas Masses. Fr. Ledvorowski, closest priest ever seen close to saint hood, had to celebrate one mass in before going to his family in South Milwaukee!! He was a Pietist....not my cup of tea...but he was a holy man contributing the formative impact on my formation in the Church. Was never trying to get up any altar boys butt. Was in a position to know!! Mother got me out of bed at 2AM!! Bundled up and off I went into the cold snowy winter night!! These were the Olde Latin Rites and we celebrated a High Mass on one of Holy Names side altars. Only light was the neighboring Nativity Display.....Norway Pines and colored light and their scent!! That was the only light with the six beeswax candles for the high mass!! We were not alone. A small bat came out of the choir loft and hovered above us. Looked up at it a few times. There were myths present in those days on bats!! That animal was my brother. Priest and Acolyte on a cold winters night!! Priceless!! If am granted the relfection time at my end , that memory will be there!!

Another great Christmas experience under the Latin Rites: Served a Solemn High Mass as the lone server. Usually it took six altar boys to serve the three celebrants. At St Nicolas Hospital Main Chapel, Father Shecherik and myself were the whole celebration!! There was one of the good sisters who helped direct me from the sidelines!! It came out alright!!

Incense is used in almost every high mass today, but before 1962 you needed an indult for that. Another regional difference, Taylor Marshal mentioned the number of candles, is just what ceremonial it's mimicking. In Rome, they take a low mass and add the chant to it, the movements of the servers are nearly identical, so just two altar servers is fine. In other places, it's taking a solemn high mass and stripping it down a little, so it's a more full ceremony with more servers.

@@svensven8994 novus ordo is a macdonald's way of dining, latin mass is fine dining. both will feed you, except macdoland's is considered fast food and not so healthy in a long run. this is what NO is. it's not reverential, it's not inspiring, it's not drawing people in. as a matter of fact, millions of catholics have left the church as the NO mass doesn't appeal. it's not an evangelizing mass. for many it's boring and empty of any depth. why keep it? time to return to the roots. @@svensven8994 you have a valid point - there are actually three types of forms in a catholic church: latin mass (including 3 liturgies - high, sung and low), NO as it's seen throughout most parishes - watered down version, uninspiring and lacking any deeper spirituality and then there's the actual NO mass that V2 had in mind that was supposed to be infused with Latin Chants, prayers throughout the mass. for some reason the real version never took off after vatican 2 and catholics were served watered down NO mass (#2). no wonder people are turning to something more authentic especially that it exists.

There is also an additional "semi-solemn" form of the solemn high mass which came about after 1962 (this is still the Traditional Mass, not the Novus Ordo) in which there is no subdeacon, and the deacon does the things which the sudeacon would usually do (except for holding the paten and humeral veil, and some other differences). However this is not very common and also not very well known from my experience, but some places do it particularly in the SSPX.

This is one of my reasons for being a fan of the liturgical reform: specifically, the newer idea of progressive solemnity - where singing could be added depending on the capability of the presider. Rather than everything having to be a low mass with hymns tacked on (as was the near-universal practice at parishes where priests couldn't sing), instead Mass could be done with great dignity and solemnity due to the efforts of choir and deacon, and the priest could warble a couple of things to sustain this high level of reverence without torching the liturgy. At a Usus Recentior parish where the liturgy is taken seriously, of course - not one where an out of tune guitar strummer is singing David Haas songs.

Usually when you hear someone say Tridentine Mass there using it as a synonym for Traditional Latin Mass. There not referencing whether its a High or Low Mass. Sometimes you'll see it listed as Tridentine Mass in a bulletin to make a distinction from a Novus Ordo Mass.

This is the last time the priest turns toward the congregation prior to the sacrifice being accomplished and his communion. The reason is that he is now entering the most solemn portion of the mass requiring his utmost attention. It's also symbolic as many of the rubrics or motions are also to let people know where he is in the Cannon or consecration. To me, it feels like the priest is collecting the offertory prayers from the people and sending them to God.

Orate Fratres = "Pray Brethren"... The Priest is addressing us, the faithful, and asking us to unite our prayers with the holy sacrifice that is about to take place on the altar. The TLM is very clear in that the Priest faces us when addressing us, and faces God when praying to God.

[??????] In any on the 3 Masses, does the congregation join to sing, or does only the choir sing?
@rlriehn85
@rlriehn85 3 жыл бұрын
I'm still relatively new, but what I can tell you is that during any form of "high" mass where there is music, the congregation can sing along with the choir during the ordinaries (Kyrie, etc.) along with the "Et cum spiritu tuo" part among others that the server is supposed to say, in this case sing. During a Low Mass the congregation does not respond or sing during the mass at any time. I know locally people whisper the responses to themselves. I don't know if they are supposed to, but I just know they do. Now one of the TLMs I attend during a Low Mass the organist plays music almost the whole time. There is NO singing, just him playing softly. This is ONLY on the Sunday Low Mass to my knowledge. Singing during a High Mass is completely your choice. I see a lot of people singing, myself included. However, I've been taught how to sing Latin in choir, so I'm comfortable singing in that language. No one stares at you or judges you for NOT singing or FOR singing. Participation is NOT mandatory. People don't even sing the responses at the one church I attend. It's totally your choice.
@beatrizbiederman6696

Robb Riehn, thank you for your response. Before C19; I was in a Traditional Novus Ordo Choir (that would be a mix of the plain music in English, like the Gloria and all the Consecration responses, with some chants, like the response to the Dominos voviscum, Kyrie, Agnus Dei, and a chant after communion. Sometimes the pieces were from classical composers in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, or English.) We would encourage the congregation (they now call it “laity”) to sing. I sporadically have gone to a Latin Mass, rarely, like once during Lent, until this C19 kicked in. I found one priest out of many many many! churches I searched who would give communion on the tongue (I refuse to take on the hand). Most priests preferred to be obedient to the Mandate if Abp. Jose Gomez, who wrongfully followed Civil law instead of Canon Law re the sacraments (as well as the risk of martyrdom. According to Sister Miriam, that kind of mandate is also out of the order of Authority. We can not undo the 3rd Commandment of God.). So the priests kicked back at first, some video taping Masses, or nothing at all. But none, except that one priest, never closed Masses and gave me permission to take communion on the tongue... no hesitation. (When they reopened before the outdoor masses, I was refused by at least 5 Novus Ordo priests to take communion on the tongue. I started calling around. No one, except that one priest said, yes, “absolutely.”). The drive was long. But I supported his parish until the closest LATIN Mass opened. (Again Abp Gomez had restricted most of the FSSPs in our archdiocese which were subordinate to the main church.). For the last two weeks, I’ve attended an FSSP Low Mass (outdoors), even further away than that Novus Ordo... lots of gasoline. I noticed they had a small number of people in a choir. They sang about 4 songs. An entry song, a chant after communion and closing song. And one more somewhere. I met the director, knowing that I didn’t want to join right away, until I get the order and the flow of the Mass down and make a commitment to attend there regularly. It’s far, and I need to start meeting some people. I’m to myself. The choir may be good for that, but I’m not sure I want to even sing! It’s work to stay on track with Mass and singing. And I look forward to more directly connecting with God during Mass which I know happens more profoundly in a Latin Mass. I have not taken my Missal yet. I’m just listening, observing, and following. Dr. Marshall’s lesson on “responses” was perfect. I didn’t hear the congregation singing. So I asked the question in this forum, then I just asked the music Director if I can sing as part of the congregation as I learn the songs he is forwarding to me. He said YES. That the people are timid, but they can sing. And I noticed a few others around me opened up too this past week! I’m sure they know the music way better than I do! But I want to know what Taylor Marshall knows about this. ...And that’s my story so far!

In the Pre-Tridentine Mass the low Mass is sung by the priest assisted by the clerk who prepares the chalice using a humeral veil throughout the first half of the liturgy going from the rood altars (which Trent destroyed to make Protestants happy) to the chancel. The clerk signifies an angel going between the Heavenly Realm of the Chancel to the Earthly Realm of the Nave, sadly this has been absent from Rome since the 16th century. THEN the prepared gifts are offered by the priest. Low Mass in the old Latin rite is ALL chanted, including the Canon and incense is always used at low mass. What makes a low Mass is not wether it is said or sung but rather if there is only one priest and one clerk assisting him. We use this from time to time in my synod which uses the ancient Sarum rite at the Cathedral of Our Lady & Saint Ninian, Scotland. More is done at a Sarum Low Mass than at a papist “high mass” that uses a whole church, at least three “priests” and an army of servers not to mention a choir. Don’t kid yourself or others that this cut down liturgy of 1570 is the “Traditional Latin Mass” or even more humourlessly as some of you people call it the “Mass of the Ages”. You may not have any proper liturgy but I am glad Rome still has a sense of humour.

Can someone illuminate me on the quietness of the Latin mass? Someone I know claims that if the priest said things a loud, it would help the congregation to follow along so that we too may offer up these prayers. I tried telling this person that the prayers aren't being said for us to hear, they are being offered to the Lord by our priest who represents us, but this person claims that we too are priests, just not ministerial priests (in the OT, before the incident with the Golden Calf, all the Israelite were priests, and the NT restored that priesthood according to St. Peter in his epistle), and that we too should be offering these prayers up too.

I use the red missal(summorum pontificum) and follow right along with the priest. This missal really helps because it has little notes along the sides of the page that gives you an idea of where the priest is at. Like when the bell is rung or when to sit or stand and when the priest turns etc... and yes we have the option to pray the mass with the priest. It says so in this missal. I also offer myself to the Father along with Jesus in the sacrifice. In this missal It’s Latin on the left page and English on the right. I have my own missal and put a cloth cover on it. Hope this helps. God Bless.

KittyEvangeline the mass should be said in the manner that pleases the Lord. The priest is on the alter on our behalf for the good of our salvation. I choose to pray with the priest but we’re not required to. It’s easy for me because I’ve been at it for ten years. But to reiterate the Mass should be said in whatever manner pleases our Lord and I fully accept that. But for me the Traditional Mass is perfect and should never be changed. I call it Jesus’s Mass. it transcends all time.

I’m not really sure if you're referring to a Low Mass or High Mass and which parts so I’ll just mainly talk about the Canon of the Mass. A couple thoughts come to mind... The Canon of the Mass is said to go back to Pope Damascus in 366AD. It’s the oldest and Holiest part of the Mass and is said at a whisper. This idea goes back to Old Testament times where the Jewish priests in the temple said the Holiest parts at a whisper. Taylor Marshall talked about this in one of his videos. If you're referring to Low Masses. (Outside of the Canon which is always said at a whisper). Some Priests say Low Masses louder or softer than others. Just depends on the Priest. If you search youtube for ICKSP you should be able to find the ICKSP channel. They have Low Masses that are very audible.

I think it's inaccurate to call the sung Mass "high Mass", as if it's a variation of the solemn Mass. But no, sung Mass is in essence a low Mass, despite it looks more like a Solemn Mass. Catholic Encyclopedia describes the sung Mass in this way: "It is really a low Mass, since the essence of high Mass is not the music but the deacon and subdeacon." We should not name it by its accidentals of chant, incense and solemnity; but call to mind the essential of the lack of deacon and subdeacon.
