@@TheDrivewayEngineer I have a ls. I want to build it to make reliable. But everyone is telling me to go flat tappet cam. They are the best and the factory uses them because they are the most reliable. And unless I’m running 8000 rpm all the time I don’t need a cam that uses solid roller lifters. And I’d most likely blow my bearings out on my rollers by going to slow. Is he right?
@carguy3028
@carguy3028 2 жыл бұрын
Another thing to keep in mind is you will spend money on things you don’t think of to get the swap to work, little things like bolts even add up, supporting hardware to integrate the engine. If you are cash strapped the best advice would be to get everything complete in one go, then drop in and run stock. A stock 5.3 with dual exhaust will run better than a mild 350. They practically last forever especially in a rarely driven car so you can mod it later if you want. I spent more money because I got a good deal on a 6.0 engine that wasn’t entirely complete, it was complete pan to intake but missing wiring harnesses and a few accessories.

To be fair, in every Richard Holdener video I’ve seen he’s very clear with the engine performance graphs that show what RPM range produces the best power for a given combination. If internet idiots don’t pay attention and go buy expensive parts that work best above 5000rpm and all they do is drive around on the street then I have no sympathy for their stupid mistakes. I appreciate you are honest about the headers and buying for looks where many folks would not.
@stlchucko
@stlchucko 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure Holdener has videos that have demonstrated that headers make more power.
@texasstreettunes1310
@texasstreettunes1310 2 жыл бұрын
@@stlchucko they do, even more with a cam swap honestly there pretty cheap too unless you try to buy them from some fancy name brand that claims they make 2 more hp then there competitors. But my biggest regret was trying to do all motor so much cheaper and better just to go turbo if your lookin for cheap power
@stlchucko
@stlchucko 2 жыл бұрын
@@texasstreettunes1310 I think manifolds vs headers on turbo stuff is a non-issue at reasonable power levels. For that, I see packaging and durability being more important. I noticed that the headers have the biggest effect on rec port LS heads since the exhaust side needs all the help it can get being that they only flow about 2/3 of what the intake ports do. Holdener tested a bunch of truck cams on a 6L with rec heads with manifolds and with headers, and the headers made more power everywhere. I suspect it's why there's "rec port" cams with big exhaust numbers. It helps when using the manifolds, but often don't make much difference with headers since they scavenge so much better.
@texasstreettunes1310
@texasstreettunes1310 2 жыл бұрын
@@stlchucko yeah for sure dont use headers with a turbo setup, i used 1 3/4 up and forward headers with a 3inch cross over worst mistake i ended up making a whole new kit with manifolds and 2.25 cross over and the spool time was insane im pretty sure when i did my research even a 2inch cross over is good for 1500hp+.

Nice to see that you reinforced the message I've seen other YTubers give: engines are commodity goods. The only reason to tear it down is if it's a high performance/race engine, or it has a lot of sentimental value (i.e. the first car I ever drove, after I restored it with my Dad, or my kids were conceived in that back seat.) When you can pick up a running engine WITH WARRANTY for 2 or 3 thousand dollars, why risk tearing into something that runs and maybe breaking it, and definitely slowing down your project?

Last year I helped a friend that had made several bad choices because he wanted a LS swap. What should have been a cheap swap ended up costing almost $5000 from bad decisions. He traded a built 383 with a th400 trans +$1000 for a 200k mile 1998 LS1/4l60e, the LS1 ended up being seized and had to be rebuilt. He hit a point where he was going to give up and sell it all but I stepped in to at least get it running. Another expensive waste of money was the sheet metal intake he had bought, looks cool but does nothing and costs alot.

What I need to know is 1) can I use the transmission that came with the car? 2) do you reuse any of the parts that are on the V6? 3) does the suspension need to be done right away? 4) do I need a new K member? I'm sure there are 100 more questions but those are the most important to me.

I half-disagree about headers - they do make power, but 5-10hp for that price is absurdly bad $/hp. Same for the TBSS intake, unless you can pull one complete from the boneyard for $30 like I have. The cast OEM headers that fit and truck intake if it fits will let you spend money on things that REALLY make a difference.

This is the video everyone should watch before doing an Ls swap. I've gone down the road of spending a lot of money to do one, and learned that I didn't have to.. I could have got away much cheaper, and had just as much fun. I'm about to swap another 3rd gen Nova of mine.. the complete running 5.3 with wiring, pcm, tac module, and pedal I got in trade for a big block bellhousing (roughly $300 because it was a lakewood bellhousing).. I went with ICT billet swap mounts ($40), an Amazon 302-2 oil pan ($200, and came with everything including the dipstick), Ls3 manifolds ($200, most people can get away with the stock truck manifolds).. I'll barely have any money into my swap this time.. and the 300hp the 5.3 puts out is a lot more than the probably 150 the car had originally. I also have about $250 into a clutch, pressure plate, and clutch ball pivot adapter because I'm running a muncie 4 speed.

I just found a used one for $400 because the dude is doing a diesel swap on an LS swapped Rover. I know all about rabbit holes, my other project is a H6 swapped Subaru. I see so many KZbin channels swapping the intakes on LS’s. I’m just swapping in a complete truck motor, L33 because it’s aluminum block like the Rover V8. Similar weight. Thanks for the information.

Good video I had my project on hold for 2 years obsessing over the perfect motor wanting a lower mileage 6.0/6.2. Big waste of time I just want a fun street car. Found a 5.3 with half the mileage, quarter the price and actually complete! Used the extra money for cam and car intake to fit under hood. I can burn the tires easily and i'm actually enjoying the car now.

Wow perfect video Thank you 🙏 much needed advice. I was wondering if I could use your help? 1st time for me building a LS I have one out of a 2003 GMC I’m trying to build for my 1929 Chevy Sedan. I would like to reach high 400 hp. Like you said look all over the web everyone will tell you different. Just wondering if you could point me in the right direction to hit those numbers. Thanks

Got a 99 Tahoe, 2door, 2wd. Has the 4l60 in it, however I have heard the newer ones were better. I just want a swap with a “bolt in cam” for some “chop”. Thoughts?

I've noticed all your swaps are involving the 6.0 w/ 4 L 80 e trans, okay what about the OBS trucks with the NV 3500 manual transmission. Do you have any info on how to connect the wire harness to thet 5.3 LS.👍✌

Hey JR I just graduated college and just bought a Firebird v6 that I plan to swap a 408 stroker into. I’ve been researching (tons KZbin and forums) on engine building and swaps since 2019 so kinda understand what to do but never done it. This is my first engine build do you have any thoughts, comments, or advice on this plan?

I did my swap in 2010 when there was a lot less information but fortunately most of it was good. I had a 383 with heads, a 243 duration cam and rpm air gap manifold that blew up. I replaced it with an lq4 with ls1 hotcam and nothing else done. I did have to rebuild it due to copper showing on the cam bearings but I had built engines before so no big deal. That near stock lq4 was 2/10s faster in the 1/4 than the built 383 that it replaced and it ran better on the street. I watch Richard Holdner too and I reach a different conclusion than a lot of people, I see the gains offered by the best and concluded it typically isn’t worth the money. I also see a lot of tests to get that extra 12hp are done with a fully built engine often a 408 stroker. Unless your engine is built to the max you mostly won’t notice the difference and your engine will likely run worse, the whole package has to work together. The best intake is typically the stock one, headers may be a good idea if the stock manifolds won’t fit, I went with headers because my 383 already had headers and going that rout was easier. Years later I modified the 6.0 and went down the rabbit hole to improve it but I had it running and driving while I collected parts, if plans had changed I would have lost money but still had a running driving 6.0 swap. For most people I think a 5.3 with an Ls6 cam would be spot on.

Most people don't have the time, patience, or know how to properly assemble an LS. And watching someone who does, makes it look easier than it is.

You know what's easier than properly assembling an LS? Not taking it apart in the first place.

@@TheDrivewayEngineer I'd rather replace cam and rod bearings in a free LH6, than spend money on an engine I know nothing about, but I fix them everyday for thirty years now, and own all the cover alignment tools, plus it's getting a cam and springs, and gap the rings, so *not* taking it apart isn't really an option.

buying an incomplete engine is really up there on the dont do list, i feel into that trap but luckily it was so cheap even with the second engine i got i was still only in 200$, still spend more then i should have, but you learn.

More a question then comment. You have a ls vortex with 300,000 plus miles and still runs. You pull it apart and refresh or run it? I am the second owner sense 80,000.
