im honestly shocked and so incredibly thankful for you and these vids (esPECIALLY THE BOOK everyone check it out its brilliant) because my school’s badminton coaches have been the only people to really teach me and btw they weren’t actual coaches they just volunteered. they always told us to smash or clear to keep your racket straight facing the net and that “its all in the wrist” like,,,, thank you for correcting me skskks

Great content as always Jonathan! Little fun fact to make your claim about the power not coming from the wrist even stronger. The muscles involved in flexing and extending the wrist is moved by smaller muscle groups only in the forearm, whereas rotation in the forearm involves bigger muscle groups including the overarm. Glad to see a badminton coach putting great information out on the internet!!

I have an unrelated question. You probably know badminton is one of the more "irrelevant" sports to professors and such figures when it comes to the academic world. It's often overshadowed by more renowned activities such as basketball, and therefore unfavorable to put in an application because literally nobody gives a damn. Could you make a video or provide some sort of advice on how to maintain a successful academic career, but continue badminton as a main sport? (Excuse my english lol)
@SwiftBadminton6 жыл бұрын
My next video is going to be sort of relevant, it's about the popularity of the sport in the west. You're correct that no one gives a damn, but my advice to you is to work on your time management. You will be able to fit badminton around your studies if you're motivated enough.

Good video, and you raise a common issue for beginners. As an experienced badminton coach myself I found it very useful to focus on the player's racket grip from day one. With the racket held in the correct grip the tendency to hit with a pan-handle action is much reduced as the racket head no longer faces square on to the shuttle and requires forearm pronation to present cleanly to the shuttle.
@SwiftBadminton6 жыл бұрын
David Adams Completely agree with you. The problem is beginners will show you a proper forehand grip, but tend to shift their grip before the stroke to a panhandle grip, and then proceed to make the same error
@jackburtonstwin6 жыл бұрын
That is a common problem and you are right about having to establish muscle memory through repetition. The same logic can be applied to correcting grips although, as a coach, it is a pain to have to be constantly focusing on the player's grip as well as their basic technique.

My advice to badminton players, strong legs and core are a must. You need to reach there first before you can hit, so we are using our legs all the time moving within the court and powerful smashes comes from strong legs. Wrist power is just for the snapping action and direction you want the shuttlecock to move. If your legs are weak, you will looked like a fool when playing badminton. Another pro-tip, in badminton doubles the NET is your ally. Use it to protect yourself and dictate the return which will be a lift from your opponent or a net play. Usually it will be a lift and and your partner will be ready for the kill. Never lift if you are playing at front.

Hi, somehow you managed to describe me perfectly in this video... :D One question tho, do you think its necessary to specifically train the muscles involved in pronation of your arm for more power in your smash? E.g., pronator teres and pronator quadratus or will these muscles naturally get stronger as i play? (I picked up badminton 2 years ago im 26)

You, Jonathan, are absolutely legendary! I could never understand why my Overhead shots were so ridiculously weak. Everything for me was wrist wrist wrist, it got to the point where I was actually able to hit from backcourt to backcourt using solely my Wrist and arm movement. However, it took an immense amount of energy, so much energy in fact that a clear was a huge struggle and I was blown out just a mere 10 minutes into a game. The lack of power was good for drops I guess? But nonetheless I definitely prefer to learn the proper way of hitting. My opponent on the other hand, was literally walking around the court casually hitting backcourt to backcourt. It was almost embarrassing being blown out from a clear. Pronation was something I never quite understood, I’ve tried to watch other videos and Professional tournaments but they stroke too fast for me to see what they are actually doing. but you showing it now has truly changed the way I play. Clears are now effortless and the feeling is so much better. I’m not a KZbinr myself, but what I do know is that you put an incredible amount of effort into your videos. Your subscribers and I will stand by you every step of the way. if you ever have a request to us viewers, just know we are always there ready to reach out. So thanks again and cheers to more amazing content!

Hi Jordan! It's such a joy to hear from you, thank you for the affirmation that my content is creating a positive impact. People like you are why I create these videos in the first place, so it makes me so happy that you see and appreciate all the hard work. It really makes it worth it! And btw, I go into a lot more detail on forearm pronation in my ebook. So that could help you further if you haven't seen it yet. I recognised your name from Patreon at the $20 tier! I'm serious about creating a community there, but I hope you allow me some time to get familiar with the platform. In the meantime, shoot me a message anytime and I'll get back to you straight away. All the best, Jonathan
@jordanhii61806 жыл бұрын
Swift Badminton School Of course :D. Oh yes, I have yet to read your ebook. You usually mention it at the end of every video but the reason I don’t read it is because of my current level of play. I consider myself as a rather average self taught player. Although I can hit kind of ok, my movement is absolutely atrocious, the popular term is What’s the point of being able to hit a 400km/h smash if you can’t even reach the shuttle in time to make the shot?. I feel my movement requires attention before I even start to learn smashes but I will most certainly read it when the time is right 😄 Oh the Patreon, yes I had a feeling you would recognise me 😄. I know you mention many benefits in the Patreon but I just want to let you know that I don’t donate to you just for the attention and likes. I donate because I see so much potential in your content and channel, I truly believe that your mission will be a success if you continue down your current path. I love badminton to bits, No matter how rubbish I am, I will never stop playing. Exposing the sport to a larger audience will definitely be a challenge but certainly not impossible. In otherwards, what I’m saying is that a shout out isn’t necessary 😄, I don’t want to be seen as “Something to remember” in the video, I want your full attention on the task at hand 😄. I have lots of ideas brewing in my head about what to do next so I will post on the Patreon at my earliest convenience!
@SwiftBadminton6 жыл бұрын
Ah that's very smart of you, you've got your priorities right! I'll have to make a video on movement and footwork at some point in the future :) Though I made the effort to make the ebook beginner friendly, since I anticipated that being to main audience. So have a look when you have the time, it covers a lot of basics with the grip and overhead stroke, since that's the number 1 reason I've seen beginners not be able to generate power. That's awesome to hear about the Patreon man :) We both love badminton to bits, and that's why I create these videos. Again I'm so happy to hear that coming from you. And I really appreciate how you support my mission, and aren't just there for the attention. However I still want to make it as awesome as possible for my patrons, so I'll be working on developing that platform once I'm finished with the video I'm working on. Can't wait to see your ideas! And don't worry, creating high quality content will always have my full attention. But I'll still have the chance to give you a shoutout at the end ;)

I only found your posts today. I wish I'd had the internet and your posts when I took up the sport circa 1972! Great advice you give and I'm learning from you already on the technical stuff, thank you. I could not agree more about the essential diversity of training for badminton, stamina, strength and agility. One piece of advice for you however Sir, your squats go far too deep. The thighs should not dip below horizontal. By going almost to a sitting position, you risk doing irreparable damage to your knees and the ligaments which hold it together. Stop at thighs horizontal, or even a smidge higher and you'll feel the burn right in the quads where you want it, without straining any ligaments or tendons.

For people watching this video, if there is one thing to remember, it's the part about strength training. If you're really motivated to progress and start playing a lot, you absolutely need to strengthen your whole body to not break down as he said. If you knew the number of player I see getting tendonitis and other nasty injuries because they just play 10+ hours of badminton a week without a single minute of physical preparation.
