You know what I love about this as a parent? When you embrace these concepts of showing up every day to put in the work and letting go of your ego, you are setting a great example for your kids! Especially teenagers who know everything and don’t like to be lectured by adults. We can lead by example.

I got people telling me “why are you doing nothing but running only?” Standing behind me looking at my speed and time. Sometimes even talk loud in the gym saying “I saw you ran for an hour, but your distance is so short” It did pissed me off during that point of time and I feel like telling him off MYOB. People just simply wants to put you down sometimes. I think these people are empty and need to put someone down so they can feel better of themselves. Looking for victims to be entertained. But I still kept doing what I’m doing till today and I’ll never give up.
@runningwithjane2 жыл бұрын
DO NOT let them get to you. How incredibly rude!! You keep doing you and I guarantee you are far better off than those people putting you down. Happy people don't do that kind of stuff. Proud of you for continually doing something that's incredibly helpful for your mind and body!

absolutely agree with these points. After frustration with injuries, i reset and started from the couch and went on 5-10 min runs at 10-11 min/mi pace. After 2.5 years of a slow build, i'm in my first real training block after a 37:27 10km and shooting for a sub 3hr marathon in March. Consistency and a reasonable build are so important.

Thank you for sharing your experience! That slow and steady build with a focus on building endurance first is so important! Wishing you best of luck on snagging that sub-3! Where will you be going after it?

You know a big part of my story Jane. After 10 marathons I never came close to reaching my full potential because I never put in the effort. I always had something better to do and seems to miss my important runs. So after a 10-year break I came back for one more shot at it except this time I was going to give 100% effort. I did miss one run and of course of a 16-week training block. And I finally hit my goal.

Your story is inspiring, Dan! And yes, just goes to show how important consistency is with training.

Thanks Jane. Good advice as always. Just finalising my training plan for the Boston (UK) Marathon on 16 April. Hoping to keep getting my 72 year old body under 6 hours as per London 2021 and Chicago 2022. Happy New Year.

well Coach Jane, I think I might have shed a tear or two watching this vid. You are kind of like those Hallmark movies, always a good lesson, and always a happy ending, and sometimes there is always a tear or two that leaks out during the movie (I'm man enough to admit that, LOL). I literally just got done watching Seth Demoor's KZbin vid of the day where the "Question of the Day" was a recap of our goals for this year 2022. I mentioned you as 1 of the 3 people I watch about running on YT. I mentioned that I did run the first winter segment of 2022 (January thru April) primarily because he and you run in the harsh Colorado winters, and that was inspiration for me. However, my system crumbled the last half of 2022. Just my usual Psoriatic arthritis, then covid, flu, etc. no big deal, just I bounce back slower these days. BUT HEY NOW, it's not all sadness, as you mentioned, some of life is just showing up. I've been showing up slowly in my strength training, and soon I'm going to show back up in the running. Sure, I write these long responses, I'm retired, can't hire you as a coach, I don't have much to offer anyone, a few kind words, a few prayers for you and your family. BUT, I always want to encourage you, that YOU are doing a wonderful thing by producing videos. Thank you Coach Jane, I'm healthier and better off because of your videos. Have an awesomeness day.

Hey Ken! Always appreciate your genuine words. Let's be honest - sometimes life is really hard and training just has to take a back seat. There shouldn't be any guilt or shame in that. It just won't always be the priority. Celebrate even the small wins and your path back to recovery and health. Check in soon and let me know how 2023 is starting out for you. Wishing you all the best this year!

I'm slowly making my way through it...not because it's boring, but because I reread some parts, highlight parts, and with marathon training I can only get through a few pages before I just can't keep my eyes open any longer ha! Happy New Year, Linda!!

The ONLY thing I'm afraid of is injury. I sometimes think I'm training right at the edge of overtraining but I dont know just where that edge is or I would probably train even closer to it, LOL I'm still trying to recover 100% from what my doc said was patellofemoral pain syndrome. This is taking longer than any other injury BY FAR. I am still getting better so I will keep at it. I plan on adding bike riding for the winter when the trails are muddy. Like *Mark Lewis* , I just want to be better than average (and without getting a heart attack) :o)
@runningwithjane2 жыл бұрын
I agree, John, that knowing where that edge lies for each individual can be tough. Sorry to hear about your knee pain - were you prescribed certain strength exercises in the meantime? Biking is definitely great for keeping up aerobic fitness when you can't run.

@@runningwithjane My doctor is funny, he said just strengthen the quads with squats, leg extensions and whatever else you find on KZbin . . . and slow down :o) He was surprised at how good of shape I was in for being 67 years old. In better shape than most teenagers these days.

Thanks for all the great videos Jane! I've always believed "consistency is key", sometimes the hardest part is getting out the door. Once you get going it's typically not bad and you feel good once it's completed. Although, I had a long run a few weeks ago and it was just a nasty day, rain, 20 mph winds, gust of 30 mph. I got out there and thought, I'll just start running and see how it goes, I thought I can probably run at least 10 of the 16 miles. I did change my socks twice, shoes once, shirt and jacket once, but I made it through. I did have to dig deep on that day, but was pleased I was able to complete it. Looks like this coming Saturday is supposed to be similar, and this one is 20 miles (my longest run ever), just a walk in the park..... Thanks again for all the motivation!
@runningwithjane2 жыл бұрын
Those kind of runs are the ones that make you mentally stronger for sure! Most people would've skipped, but you didn't!! My motto typically is, if it's on the schedule, come hell or high water it has to get done. How did your 20-miler go this past Saturday? I hope the weather cooperated a bit better for you!
@Trisomethingnew2 жыл бұрын
@@runningwithjane Well.... Not so good! It was just raining too hard, I never made it out the door. We had 5" of rain that day and a lot of area flooding and road closures. I did get out there on Sunday, which was a clear sunny day and completed my 20 miler. The forecast is showing rain the next 7 days, but hoping there will be breaks in there so I can run without getting too wet. I haven't missed a run in this training block and determined to keep it that way. Thanks Jane!

Thanks Jane. Great video and lessons for setting goals especially the importance of consistency and more on the process less on the outcome. One mantra I live by for consistency is discipline always trumps motivation. Make it automatic and not a choice to get out the door (with some rare exceptions). Motivation can be fleeting. I also find having a running group to plug into always helps provided you can continue to set your own goals and not get caught up with comparing yourself to others.
@runningwithjane2 жыл бұрын
Could not agree more on "discipline trumps motivation." There are lots of times I don't feel motivated, but if it's on my schedule it's not up for discussion whether it's getting done or not. Love having running friends, too!! Mine love to get up super early and it's always nice to just have it done first thing in the morning!

Thank you so much! Ever since I began my running journey, you have been so helpful and inspirational! I have learned so much from you. I just completed my first ever half marathon yesterday, and it went amazing, and I'm definitely enthusiastic to do more!! I'm now looking into future races, and I found one that is 3 weeks away. Would you say that is too soon in between races? I'm a 19 year old female for reference.
@silvijagrava27952 жыл бұрын
After more consideration, I think I will do another half marathon in March instead, just so I don't do too much too fast. In general, what is the rule of thumb for deciding on time between races? Thanks so much and happy new year!
@runningwithjane2 жыл бұрын
Hi Silvija! Thanks for the kind words and so glad to hear the channel has helped you! Congrats on your first half marathon...that is awesome!! I would definitely wait until March to do another half, if anything just so you can give your body time to adapt to new training and hopefully get that much faster (if that's a goal of yours). As far as time btwn races, 5ks and 10ks can be closer together, but 6-8 weeks is a good time to build new fitness; 12-14 weeks between half marathons is a good amount of time and then 2 marathons per year. Of course this is totally dependent on your goals, too, just really important to build in proper recovery. I hope that helps!
