Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am exploring 3 Crank and Slider mechanisms I saw on a website full of cool mechanisms. A crank and slider is capable of converting rotary motion to linear motion or vice versa. It's similar to the Cam and Follower mechanism I featured in a previous video, but has a few differences which are highlighted in this vid.

@3:09 the mechanism is a variable ratio gear, except it's just based on friction instead of teeth. Depending where on the parabolic surface they contact, the ratio between output and input speed is changed

You should build a fully working model of a 4-stroke engine cylinder with all the bits of the cycle animated, even using cams for the valves and such, I think many people who don't know how these common mechanisms work would really appreciate it.

so #100, the quick return crank/ mechanism is used in things like presses, shapers, slotter and planers, even mechanical actuators and rotary combustion engines, the internal ones I think. It generally provides linear motion that's not quite in line with the wheel, such as being parallel with the wheel. This common mechanism is used because there are a lot of tools which need an action done in one direction of each stroke, powered saws for example, and the amount of time for returning the tool to its starting position takes less time. The reason I know this is that there's no reason at all, I just think machinery is neat and am loving this series.

These mechanisms are amazing, im sure you've seen the comments but ill add to it and say it would be really cool if you used a couple to make some cool creation. Perhaps a challenge using ALL of them? Or just a couple of your favorite useful ones? Or maybe a multiple Monday where there is a template mechanisms that you each have to copy and paste into a creation to accomplish some task? An ornithopter using the wings mod perhaps could be really cool to see.

TLDR: I know this is long but hear me out........ what if you made an Evil Furby? With the mechanisms from this video and maybe even some other mechanisms you want to test out to. Why not do something with these ones? I have a pretty funny idea, make a "cute monster"!! Use the left mechanism @13:25 for a mouth (attach the top post so it doesn't move and add suspension on the sides of the mechanism so the mouth can open and close) and have it open and close at regular intervals until an area/distance sensor is set off. Use the middle mechanism for eyelids, no changes needed, just needs to be attached to the top eyelids to open and close them, also on a slow, regular interval until an area/distance sensor is set off. Use the right mechanism for arms but not until the area/distance sensor is set off and that's when the cute turns into monster. Have the sensor speed up the eyes to the point that they're "breaking" (ie. @11:45 ) so they start blinking in random and desynchronized intervals, make the mouth speed go up and down to make it look like its trying to talk/bite you and make the arms flap up and down (fast on the up cycle like it's trying to grab you). I'm picturing a cute Furby losing power and going haywire! Would make for a hell of an episode and would allow you to put these mechanisms and more to good use.

#93 is pretty awesome for hill climbing. It provides the power of X number of pistons into torque for the wheel. Seems to work vastly better than just a bearing. #265 is a variable speed drive. By moving the pinion along the rail it will either increase or decrease the speed of the cone shaped object.

Mechanical movement 156 would be perfect for an animated oil pump in Survival. Just need a sensor at max so color mode can be turned on and either swap the electric engine for a gas one as it would have infinite power since a craft bot would be turning all that oil into gas or use a controller set to rotate at 360 degrees on a loop to turn the mechanism. I'm not that good at Scrap Mechanic Survival so I'm just shooting out ideas.
