Hard to end the fight when the guy who started it swung on you first and broke your nose. If someone's coming at and you try to move out of the way so they can pass but instead they adjust to keep coming at you then smash that motherfu¢ker in the face immediately.

@Tony_Jeffries I have so much respect for your honesty and knowledge from experience … would you recommend what you would do if someone wants to learn self defence but is concerned about brain damage … Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Wise words from a real boxer. 👏 I enjoy punching things so it's therapy for me. Better to hit a bag than hurt anyone or even get hurt. Best way to get rid of anger.

I dropped out of hard sparring classes in Muay Thai after my first in-house tournament due to the brain damage issue. It was a friendly tournament with no pressure since everyone in it was a beginner and it was a point competition, but even so I still had a mild headache for the rest of the day. I'm fine with hard liver shots, black eyes, and bloody noses, but my grandfather had dementia and if I'm not fighting as a career I don't want to increase the odds of me ending up like that. That said, I'd never give up a contact martial art as a hobby. Padwork, bagwork, and other drills are fun enough on their own.

Same with myself I got into boxing coming from a Muay Thai background which I trained in for about 6 years and fought a few times at C class level. Coming to boxing though straight away in sparring I noticed I was taking A LOT more head shots for obvious reasons as my stance and guard hadn’t adjusted to pure boxing. As my boxing skill increased, I got hit less though. had 1 boxing fight which I came out unscathed to be honest, bar not being able to bend my elbow due to the amount of hard jabs I was throwing. But we sparred every session at my gym with any weight class. I was coming away with black eyes and headaches , one session I came out the gym and throw up in the car park, Also some of the lads coming up had turned pro and sparring with them was tough especially when there multiple weight classes above. I just do the same now with bags and pads .I will do tech drills with others or body sparring but after 5 years of boxing and heavy sparring then seeing the young uns throw wild punches at each other it’s not for me anymore.

I know of an amateur event where people were new white collar fights one guy didn’t show so they asked the crowd if anyone would have a go, a pro cage fighter stepped in the ring with the beginner. Make sure the event is well regulated and your team has your best interests at heart.

The reason why i started boxing is: 1. Self defense 2. To get fit 3. Its therapy for me 4. To gain confidence 5. Discipline And the MAIN reason why i started to box is to help my parents, i want them to live a comfortable life, both my parents were born poor, all there lives they've been working hard, barley relaxing, at the moment were financially struggling, but not too much, i want to earn a good amount of money to help my parents, i want to pull my family out of poverty This is what drives me to grind everyday, and im willing to take the risks

Absolutely dead right on everything. I remember getting hits on my head. Headache and nausea for two days. Got better over time when I got used to it but not sure if that is worth it. Now I just box with a punching bag and speed bag so I don’t forget how to punch. Not many people know how to punch. I stick to jiu jitsu just to save my brain. But boxing is still the ultimate sport in my opinion.

On #3: I decided I was going to be a kickboxer when I was a teenager. I had been training in Goju Ryu for a few years and I trained hard. I trained as a boxer. I thought I had a great skill set. In my first amateur fight I took a kick to the head that flipped my switch off. Even with headgear on, I went out. My trainer told me I didn't even look like I saw the kick coming. Which is because I really didn't see it. I had to do some serious thinking about that. I decided being a pro fighter probably wasn't going to work out for me. I hear people talking about becoming fighters and how easy it looks and it makes me laugh. The best thing I got out of fighting as a kid was keeping me from getting into fights I didn't have to get into as an adult. The only street fight you win is the one you don't get into. The rest are just different levels of losing.

I'm 48 and started sparing last year, I am fast fitter stronger. I do it for fun and confidence. Now from sparing I realise most people can't fight and don't know how to throw a punch or take one. I still don't like getting hit around the head but endure it. I have learnt how to move my head. Generally boxing is a poor man's sport, billionaire go yachting, formula 1 or golfing .

Great to hear that you gain confidence from it!! Remember to wear your headgear every time you spar. And if you had a rough spar, you should avoid sparring for a couple weeks. Nobody wants brain damage.

I've wanted to box ever since I was 5, I never wanted to be famous or known, I've grown to not care about money or luxuries and now that I've saved up money and finally turned 18 I can finally see myself living my dream. So many things have happened in my life and now I really think I could do what I love and it's just so inspiring to hear your passion about the sport when it seems like no one else supports me!

I was diagnosed with epilepsy (seizures) at 13. Joined a collegiate boxing team at 18, first time boxing ever. Definitely experienced some scary stuff, but you have to face your demons. Boxing was the platform for me to do just that.

I started a boxing class last month at my Y and love it at age 70. It's an intense HIIT exercise that has caused me to up my normal exercise routine. Fun and exhausting.

In my humble opinion, one thing many people overlook is neck/traps training. They act as shock absorbers, reduce head trauma.

As someone who has aggression and anxiety, boxing has been a Godsend. I no longer let anything stressful get to me. Best of all because I can take more stress I am making more money working. Boxing is a game changer for anyone but men especially.

Boxing for self defense is the must mate. Was bullied when I was a child/teenager all the time, and the memories still haunt me now 40 years later. Only wish I had the bottle to have learnt how to stand up for myself as a kid. Physical pain goes away, but some pain stays with you forever... as unfortunately it has for me, and I guess a lot of people. Great video's Tony, and thanks for them. 😃👍

i feel what you talk. But there is major advantage of getting bullied - it makes an opportunity to get angrier to get more ready to deal hard damage to other people. And what i talk is : To compare two child 1) was bullied and overtime become self-sufficient and started standing up for themselves. 2) the child that was not bullied, had a happy childhood and a positive life experience. Okay we go further 25+ years, right and the child that grew up is jumped on street/other place but it's not the school bullies it's someone very dedicated to theoretically do major permanent harm. The child that got positive experience will mostly suffer inevitably due to lack of experience of how powerful they should react. Where's the child that stood up eventually for self guard will be more fierce and mentally stronger to deal with new more dangerous threat. So it's not that simple man, and also right now there is a war a huge war in my country and I can tell you, the nation that never had an a war experience will be 100% more weak than the one that got battle experience. Be cool, be strong and start maybe transcendental meditation. You can learn more about it's simplicity and effectiveness in google

Hi Tony, thank you for another great video. I took up boxing 6wks ago and have lost 6kg, I'm physically and both mentally fitter than what I have been in the past 8 year! I sleep in a deeper sleep at night and I have a lot more energy and I'm generally in a much better state of mind. My quality of life has improved so much since my fitness has improved! I did a 50 mile bike ride yesterday! Before that the furthest I had road was 10mile. I'm hoping to continue with my fitness and hopefully do a bit of sparring early next year. I have also introduced my 2 kids to boxing as I believe it also teaches them to listen and have good work ethics aswel as self confidence and keep them fit.

I started Muay Thai wanting to learn self defense. Over the course of two months training, I got concerned about brain health, because in every class we had a sparring session and it involved a lot of hits on the head. After a while, I decided to stop, and change to gym (I also train for runs). I still train a lot of Muay Thai and Boxing at home with the help of audio guided classes tho, because I want to be able to defense myself should I need to and I really like these martial arts, but I just don’t want that part of being constantly punched on the head.

Number 3 is why I had to stop, 10-15 concussions, brain bleed when I was young. I’m 27 now and thinking about getting in the ring because I want to coach. If I studied back in school as much as I have boxing and fighting my whole life I’d be a Harvard grad. I’m just afraid people won’t see the credibility, I do compete in other combat sports now so I do understand the mental side of being in there. My dream is to open a gym and teach Jiu jitsu and boxing someday and really try to help people either with their life struggles or achieving their own goals in the ring. Any advice? If there are any other coaches that see this I’d love the input, I just want to quit pipe fitting and do what I truly love

I just lost a 5th fight. I'm done with the sport. 3wins 5 losses. It's simply too hard and it's exhausting mentally and physically.

I don't know why anyone would give you a thumbs down but anyway. I am 62yrs old and have been hitting the bag for 42yrs, running, pushups, crunches and light weights.(no more sparring) Boxing keeps you in the best shape for real life. And at my age it keeps by balance like I was 30yrs old. You are so right about how you can lose weight and feel confident in yourself. Great videos for someone who wants to learn how to throw punches correctly and develop power. Best videos on the net. God Bless. I have used a lot of your tips to keep me more disciplined on my form. Really interesting to hear your thoughts on this one Tony. Another great video. Thinking about all the fighters who made huge money but still ended up skint. Boxing must be one of the hardest sports to make even a reasonable living, especially when considering the physical tole it takes on a fighter.

Great balanced opinion on getting into the boxing world. I used to spar many years ago with a friend who became a pro. We used to beat the crap out of each other and it was fun. Got my bell rung a couple of times but was okay in the long run. My friend went on to fight champs in his weight division but never won those bouts. One day I went to his house to hang out and he looked like FRANKENSTEIN and he was in another world. Lost a couple of teeth too. Not long after he separated his shoulder and his career was over at 28. But I learned ALOT from sparring with the guy, and it gave me the confidence to defend myself if the need arose. Fear is one reason people get hurt by attackers, and being practiced at boxing for self defense nullifies alot of that fear. And there's nothing like a good boxing workout. Gets you in shape FAST. This right here is so damn true and those last five reasons you gave for why you should do boxing is exactly why I do it. It's had a huge impact on my life ever since I was 16 I never really cared about pursuing it as a career to be a heavyweight champion. For starters I don't want to be famous and I just don't have the passion for it since my main desire/dream is to join the royal marines and be a commando,make a real difference saving lives instead of fighting for money. Boxing is so much more than just fighting in the ring it's a way of life,plus my ring is on the street,boxings definitely very special to me and I'll always be grateful for it.

Dude if you wanna train mma go to a kick boxing gym you have to keep to you're toes and get inside in boxing but thats hard to do when there are knees and low kicks coming at you

I come from a Kick boxing and Judo/Jiujitsu and Karate background (since age 8), and fighting and survival is in my nature. But Boxing(and Jiujitsu) are my first loves, my grandfather taught and trained me in Boxing and my Uncle taught and trained me in Japanese Jiujitsu/Judo as a young scrappy kid. I got back into both back in 2018, boxed in an underground fight club and now boxing in an official Boxing Organization. I do it to improve my self-defense, exercise, to perfect my MMA and self-defense skills, and to see just how far I can go. If it leads to Olympics that's great, if leads to the pros that's even better, if I end up being among the greats then that's just absolutely amazing, but all reasons aside, I just love the Art of THE SWEET SCIENCE! It's part of who I am as a man, it's part of my soul, and it's just so dang-gum fun!

Very interesting video, i was worried about brain damage when i started and it held me back from going as far as i could when i was younger. Now after a decade of alcoholism (a year sober this week) i dont have a whole lot of potential left to lose. I box because its in my blood, not for fame, not for money, not for anyone else. I box for me.

Your a real helpful honest boxing champ. Im 14 currently and soon after my summer holidays I will begin boxing. Your videos help me get the basics down. Although I know it'll most likely never happen, I want to be the next Muhammed Ali or Mike Tyson. They were the true definition of 'cool'

It makes sense and there’s ice you’re offering is great. Very realistic answers to silly questions. It’s great you have in lightened myself and hopefully others that have opened our eyes. Everyone is expecting money and they think it’s going to be easy. I’m sure these rich people that do boxing have a bit more to it behind the frame like an agent for example some are selling items with their name on itAnd so forth. To become an entrepreneur is not as easy as everyone thinks and boxing won’t make that happen. Good advice thank you very much once again

Started Boxing a few weeks ago, oh man did I miss out for 30+ years in life. Not only is it perfect cardio, it’s a f***g blast! It’s just so much fun and you are properly done, after 2h not only physically but also mentally - learning new movement patterns, punches, slipping, etc…

@@iammarkiplier this might be a bit late but, full contact sparring always has dangers. I had the same as you, I was really worried. I started sparring full contact about 2 weeks ago. Even light sparring on the head did give me a slight headache after the first training. However if you keep it light and technical, there shouldn’t be much of a worry. I cut out alcohol intentionally, since that can give you brain damage as well. I keep a fairly clean diet and only spar lightly about once a week. I am happy to spar and take maybe a bit of damage. Nowadays everything can give you braindamage. Even heading the ball in soccer is damaging to your brain. I think it’s a sacrifice you have to make for yourself. Boxing and sparring gives me great endurance and confidence. It also gives me a ton of fun and mental peace. As I said my diet is clean, and apart from the majority people I don’t drink alcohol, so therefore I try to minimize my brain damage. I still go to university so unless I have to give that up I wont quit light sparring😝. I’d never do hard sparring. Just not worth it to me since I have no intentions to compete.

One of my biggest problems in my life has been losing weight. While I do understand diet is a major key, finding an outlet where I can get exercise, relieve stress, and have fun is hard to do when you don't have many places to go. Since I have gotten my heavy bag and started training like boxers do, I have almost lost 30lbs in the last two months. This channel was instrumental in me starting the sport since I don't have any boxing gyms near me to teach me the ways of the sport. Highly encourage anybody to try it, even if you aren't looking to actually fight.

This video came to me in a perfect time, I've loved boxing my whole life, was fully committed to it for 2 times lasting 2 years approx each time, but when the time came I've always been too afraid of the punches, but now that I'm older I understand that I didn't know what I was doing inside them ring, and that caused me to have such anxiety. Just recently I've started watching Felix Savon and realised how 90% of his movements are subtle jab feints and foot feints, which completely changed my mindset. Now I understand what Cus d'amato meant with "champion fighter, champion lier". It's all about the feints and controlling the match psychologycally. I'm 32 years old now and I want to give it one last chance and I'm going crazy about it, I have such a desire but the rational me is saying "what the hell are you doing man?"

I like to encourage people with the weird reasons: becoming a more comfortable dancer, developing impeccable balance and weight distribution skills for climbing, trail running/rolling ankles, and even falling. You're just overall less likely to hurt yourself. It really is fantastic for fitness though and I'm surprised that people don't use it as an alternative to running.

Im very late to this 16 years old 5”6. I don’t believe I’m that bad for a starter but I am getting more discipline and serious each day I practice. Since discovering your channel on KZbin on boxing during the whole Covid lockdown, its been a blessing in disguise because I wanted to learn boxing for quite sometime now and recently, I've purchased the Be Better at Boxing package which is to me the best investment that I have ever done for myself. I've been training in muay thai and western boxing. Little bit of krav maga. And looking to join a wrestling club. I'm 37 and do some light sparring and a couple heavy sparring matches in muay thai. The only reason I'm doing all of this, is because it's fun lol. Love my warrior communities. I'm totally confident in myself from learning all these skills. I feel I can protect my family. The fitness is a plus as well as the confidence. But doing it for fun and community is where my heart lies with the various art forms.

Number 3 is a very good point. My mother died from early onset Dementia and aged only 58 so I found myself quitting sparring and losing the will to ever get back in the ring. From time to time I'll pick the sport up and hit the bag or something, but I'll never step foot inside a boxing club ever again (I'm only 35 by the way!)

@@k-dogg9086 I did it for over 15 years. As a teenager and young adult, I sparred hundreds of rounds. There comes a time when you have to focus on something else and boxing will not pay the bills. I'm guessing you're a young person with nothing to lose or much self awareness?

At 42 yrs of age I just started coaching boxing. But I do have 16 yrs of karate and kick boxing. I love the workout training and the phycological tactics boxing has to offer. It's a great challenge for just arm techniques and hundreds of footwork. From bobbing and weaving to Plant, Pivot, hip rotation, and strike. It's a beautiful, master piece to master your own stamina, balance, speed, and power.

Hey Tony this was as very well made video. I'm looking to get into boxing and talked to my neurologist (I have seizures) so I am worried about hits to the head. He said as long as I don't spar and just hit pads i'm good. Its the only motivating thing for me to get in shape and defend myself this is a very well made video! I plan to look for a boxing gym and will use your videos hopefully in addition to that to learn how to box. Thanks again!

If you spar in boxing keep it light, keep it technical and dont get aggressive like you're trying to kill your opponent. That way you can spar and not have to worry about your brain. Don't spar everyday, take regular breaks and throw in some body sparring here and there. That way you can still work on techniques and be used to the pressure, so if the situation ever arises that you're in the ring or on the streets, you'll be able to throw a punch and react reasonably instead of swinging and missing, or shelling up.

Im happy i found you, the reason im looking into boxin is because i got to do a tryout with school. A friend of mine and the coaches all said i did really good for a first time even a little suprised it was my first time and that they were suprised by the speed i was using (i was a goalie so hand reactions were a big part of me). They also could see the joy i had in tha sparring i did with the friend (1x 1min.) Because of them im looking into actually training and this vids helps to confirm i should rlly do it :D

I have mental health issues and boxing has been amazing , i have golden gloves fight Feb 18-20 , I'm excited and i care now i run i eat i train , and it's super humbling it can break you sometimes ,but it's like skating lol ,i love it

When I was a kid, the first fight I ever watched was de la Hoya vs Chavez. I was hooked. I felt like I was watching war Gods. I just knew I had to do it. My dad promised me he would take me to train but that day never came. Fast forward to me being 18 and finally started training. I trained until i was 21 and I did a lot of sparring. A lot of hard sparring as well but I didn't think about the risk. I got rocked hard plenty of times where the punch would make my body fall asleep but I didn't care. I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn't just this scrawny weak kid. I'm not gonna say I was great but I could give punishment and take it pretty well too. Sometimes i would go home after a sparring session and my head would be hurting or i would feel dizzy and in the back of my head there would be thoughts of brain damage and is this really good for me? But it was just something that I loved doing. I loved seeing myself scraped up and bruised and knowing that I stood toe to toe with other guys who had been training longer than me, were bigger than me, stronger or whatever. I'm older now and I'm a cook. I love it so much, but sometimes I get pain in my hands and I start wondering what it's from. I got into boxing because I felt it was something I needed to do. Now I wanna get back into it just to stay in shape but I'm lazy. I definitely wanna get my kids into it, but most likely will not let them spar unless they want to. I saw many times fathers making their frightened kids get into the ring with some killer kids and it was never good to watch. Anyway that's my story of why I got into it. And I think about doing it again every day. Wierd right?

I got into boxing because I was getting picked on at school my dad decided he had enough of it, I grew up in Newbridge south wales I never thought meeting Enzo Calzaghe (RIP) would have such a positive influence on my life further down the line. I've been very fortunate that everywhere I've lived Wales(Newbridge and Newport), London etc has had some amazing boxing gyms, and when my dad got sick of the welsh weather and moved to jersey the Public (private school) there had Savate as a PE option. I agree with the fitness aspect also the mental focus always new skills and stuff to work on, It is something I've hopped in and out of in life due to work/uni etc. But one you missed out on the boxing community, they are always the most welcoming people when you come back to training or joining a new gym etc.

Tonight was my first boxing lesson in a real boxing gym. I've been using your videos for practice and excersices at home for a bit. I'm always thinking about kick boxing at my local weight lifting gym. Tearing up the punching bag is excellent warm-up/cardio. When my mind goes idle, i'm constantly bobbing and weaving punches in my imagination, it's such a contagious hobby.

the brain health reason makes me pretty sad tbh, because I love boxing, I love watching it, and I especially love doing it, every day after a good spar I cant wait for the next one, but I am very worried about my brain health, I'm scared of the permanent effects boxing can have on me, I'm worried that ill start to be get more dumb and have even more serious effects happen like dementia, but I really dont want to give up boxing because its the only sport I like and I have ever liked, I am the only person I know that doesn't like football, and I think id have nothing much to enjoy or talk about without boxing or mma, I doubt ill ever fight pro, but I definitely want to fight amateur, and maybe even get into the Olympics, I'm fine with hard body shots, bruises, bloody noses, and black eyes, in fact I almost like them in a way, but brain damage scares me. do amateur boxers still suffer the same amount of brain damage as professional?

Same here man, I f*cking love boxing, just for the science and study of it and the warrior spirit that it instills in you. But I've had migraines since I was a child and I'll get random headaches if my head is bounced around too much (can't ride rollercoasters for this reason), I just know that I naturally have no "chin" and it would probably not take much to knock me out. Amateur boxers get cte at a much higher rate than professionals, because pros can't get to where they're at without that naturally strong chin. People like Robbie Lawler or George Foreman are not "normal", the structure of their brain casing is naturally superior when it comes to withstanding shock. The same goes the other way, some people have glass chins, and those people don't usually make it out of amateur level. They probably end up in the hospital most of the time. I'll keep studying and doing light/medium sparring, but for me fighting isn't worth the risk of brain damage.

Hi tony I recently started boxing and all by watching your videos, so I am fairly new to boxing. I practice alone since there aren't any boxing gym available where I leave and since I dont have a training partner , can you make a video on how to condition our body on our own,if there is any method that you do.

I 100 percent agree. I 1st seen the title and it made me very curious to see what you are going to say. I think it is very silly to start boxing to get rich or famous, and if someone is worried about there brain health they don't have to spar or fight a live person to enjoy, learn, or train boxing for fitness, which you did cover as well. I can say for myself, I love to box ,I love to train, it is my favorite form of exercise and it keeps my hands(punching) sharp. I also love to challenge myself especially when it comes to sparring/fighting. I like to fight without being a bully, or deal with drama and legal consequences, the ring is where I get to let my "innerbeast" out of the cage. I enjoy the whole journey of learning and growing in boxing and I enjoy the process of preparation for a fight all the way tell it is time to fight. And the fight itself is my payment for all the hard work. Even if I win or lose I learn and grow either way it goes. I take a lot of pride being a boxer because it takes a special person to actually compete, to fight In the ring is not for everyone, and I feel blessed and truly grateful and proud to be one that fights In the ring. I work nights so I could have the day time to train and plan my sleep of course, that way I could support my family and have the time to train. I fight amateur boxing so I don't make money doing it, I do it because I love and enjoy it. My family is my deepest love but boxing is my passion.and Jesus is my Lord. These are the things that I hold dearest and boxing is one of them. I just wanted to share that , thank you Tony for this video and all you do. I truly appreciate you and everything you do for our sport. Thank you and God bless you and yours

All the reasons to start boxing are the reasons I box wow. Makes me happy and have a burning desire and it's just something I can't stop thinking about. The technique and art is just so interesting I can't stop watching videos. I began boxing 8 months ago and I've been told I have a strong punch. Can't wait to see my progress as I gain technique. With my peek a boo style.
