Excellent coaching on this shot. One other key thing I found on other vids, and with my new robot, messing around is on a backspin shot, the racket or bat angle needs to be more open or up and down ---not closed. Then when they topspin back, the bat can close some. But the upward acceleration tip is GOLDEN! Thank you Tom!!!

in summary, you wanna increase the vertical angle of the racket's trajectory, you wanna brush the ball rather than hit it, and you wanna speed up the racket instead of going slow.

wonderful video! i love videos like this that address a common problem. this is def a common problem. a specific question on this: when i play a long pips player...i hit a topspin loop to them. they pip chop it back to me. it now has backspin. i loop it again. more topspin. they pip chop it back...even more backspin. at some point...this cycle gets crazy hard...esp for a low intermediate player like me....i run out of juice to do these 3 reasons well enough to get the FH topspins up and over. Any particular advice? maybe one of the answers is that there needs to be a 4th reason? (incorrect bat angle?)...when i'm on the 4th round of loop & then a pip chop...do you keep opening the bat angle a bit to get even more lift? by the 3rd or 4th round i often feel like i'm out of acceleration.....
@francodejj Жыл бұрын
In the rally, Try giving them a push/chop as well....that will make the pips player now have to drive the ball, which now comes to U with some topspin (spin reversal)....then U can attack with topspin....when they block, U push....when they drive, U attack with topspin..... works for me at the intermediate level of play 🙂

Can you do a video about weight transfer? I notice myself “falling backwards" after i execute a spinny loop on a backspin push. In practice, i can weight transfer forward, but during a match, i notice i will fall backwards.
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
I'll add this to my list. One thing you could try is contacting the ball earlier, just as the ball is going past the end of the table. This helps you transfer your weight forwards. When a player falls backwards, it's usually because he/she contacts the ball too late. This forces the player to lean back and then take a step backwards.
@marcwalmsley4315 Жыл бұрын
Taking ball too late is often because you aren’t ready to receive ball! Work on recovery,recover quicker and make sure all weight is going forwards.Multiball will cure this,bs feed on fh,start with a slowish feed to get technique and recovery sorted then slowly increase speed of feed to quicken recovery.Then when confident with that, irregular fh feed.Then you start on the bh.Hope that helps

If the ball comes without backspin, how do I give topspin?
@sbgtrev Жыл бұрын
What is the contact point you suggest? Based on the 3 points, it appears to be when the ball comes close to the body to allow the upward drive
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
Yes, I like to let the ball just come past the end of the table and then spin up the back of the ball. Some players will let the ball drop a bit more, before making contact. This makes it a bit easier to get a higher arc heavy topspin attack. Either option can work.

The moment I saw the distance of your right leg to the ball, I immediately knew the error. Get your leg TO THE BALL, anf your body low, and you will create the lever to get UNDER the ball. You don't need to do a faster stroke at all. You can lift the ball extremely easily, and slow if your are under the ball. Another tipp, don't work against the backspin rotation, but use it instead. Means, hit the ball at about 0700 O'clock. If you hit it at 10, it will land into the net, at 9, most likely too. At 8 not so much and so on. Lifting the backspin ball at a topspin always starts with a push angle, this is extremely usefull for backhand flipping close to the table against short backspin balls. Approach the short backspin ball with your backhand with a push angle, get under der ball, and easily flip it, with your wrist. It's suuuuper easy and will blow your mind HOW easy it can be done

@mozza1985 Жыл бұрын
Should be relatively open vs heavy backspin

If it's very heavy backspin, your bat angle should be very vertical. If it is light backspin, you can close the bat angle a little bit.

Sorry noob question but what if its sidespin from the opponent can I still forehand topspin attack?
@rupertz.2903 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Sidespin usually comes together with underspin (e.g. from a serve with side and underspin), or with topspin (e.g. as an attacking side topspin). You have to adjust for the amount of underspin and sidespin, meaning aim against the sidespin direction. Fortunately your topspin will not be very vulnerable against sidespin, because you overpower it .

My topspin vs backspin is very weak. I try to do it with a lot of spin. And I'm really able to generate a lot of spin which is making it hard for more amateur players to return because the ball flies off their bat. But the problem is that they are very high and slow, the parabola is too big and when I play against better players it's easy for them to just smash it.
@Honeydew0567 Жыл бұрын
I also struggled with your issue, but trust me just keep practicing and you begin to produce more spin the more you become comfortable with the looping action. For me I found that better players would take advantage of my spin once I looped but that's how it is, but now I'm comfortable looping in games frequently, the better players now also struggle against my spin, so just practice and it will take time for your loops to become faster and with more spin
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
You could adjust your stroke slightly. If you contact the ball slightly earlier and play slightly more forward, your shot should go a little lower over the net and have a little more forward energy.
@Joygulplay Жыл бұрын
@@TomLodziak Oh! My coach told me if I want to make a shot with more spin to wait for the ball to drop a bit lower.
@Joygulplay Жыл бұрын
@@Honeydew0567 Thanks for tye encouragment I will definetly keep training to become better.
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
@@Joygulplay Your coach is right. If you let the ball drop, then you can play with lots of spin, but your shot is likely to have a higher arc and be slower, as you are putting more energy into spinning the ball upwards. If you contact the ball earlier, you can keep the ball lower over the net and play a little faster, but will probably have less spin. Either option can work. In fact, if you can do both - and vary during a game - then it can be hugely effective.

@josepinchero Жыл бұрын
in the last seconds of this video you show yourself finishing pretty high (way up and over the head). isnt this a bit too far? if someone good counter-loops your shot back fast, dont you want to be ready for that shot? i would "guess" that this long of a stroke would make it difficult to get ready fast enough for a faster paced rally.
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
There is scope to shorten the follow through. But you must make sure you retain the speed to counter the backspin. Personally, I don't find it that difficult to recover from this high position for the next shot. If anything, it has the advantage of bringing my elbow to a high position, which is useful for fast topspin rallies.
@CheeseCakes11944 Жыл бұрын
I find the biggest thing actually is the opponent's amount of back spin on the ball. Its not you, its the ball and the spin that the opponent put on it. Even if your stroke and timing and brush is perfect, the ball's trajectory is going to react differently if its 100% back spin, vs 50% backspin vs 20% backspin. What the pro's usually do, when the level of backspin is unclear, is to top spin return it maximally at 100% but at a slower forward speed, to give it lift and higher clearance over the net. They hope the top spin is enough to bring it back down on the table. The disadvantage of this however, is that it is high and slow, and predictable. Some very high level players will give the backspin push or induce this type of high spin, high ball return from the opponent, then attack this topspin return straight after with a fast ball return. At the moment I am just practising returning them slower with higher top spin, and with a higher trajectory. Then if i get better, to lower the trajectory.

why are your second finger still in the middle of the bat when you play?
@Honeydew0567 Жыл бұрын
I also do this myself, I find it gives you an extra control when hitting the ball versus no finger on the middle of the bat, but it's really down to personal preference on how you like to hold the bat
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
There is no reason why I do this. I'm not really conscious that I do it. Many tell me it is a bad habit. But I don't think it impacts my forehand strokes very much and I move the finger when playing backhands.
