What specific fertilizer do you recommend for these Hydrangeas at the beginning of Spring? If not on drip irrigation, are these good when hand watered in a garden with sun for about 6 hours a day?

I would recommend a slow release fertilizer in the spring. You can hand water but i would recommend setting a sprinkler to go off for about 30 minutes a day. Depending on where you live they may need more or less water. They do like regular watering though and when doing so make sure it is going deep in the soil to get to the deeper roots.

Beautiful hydrangeas! I want to grow some in Zone 5 to hide a neighbor's unattractive fence. However, the walkway that is near might be blocked from the plant protruding out. Will trimming them on only the protruding side damage them in anyway? Can you recommend a tall perrenial grass in case the hydrangeas won't work? The area gets lots of sun.

You can deadhead but trimming is faster and in my opinion more effective.

Heidi ... I have planted some little limes. Can you tell me HOW they react if they are too dry or even TOO wet. I live in southern iowa zone 5b as well. I am fortunate to have beautiful soil. I have NEVER tested it so no clue? Although they are new plants they seem to not have quite the amount of leaves when I purchased them. They did bloom this year. Those I planted a couple of years ago have never bloomed since I planted them. I believe I had them in too much shade and have moved them all into one location now. ADVISE would as always be APPRECIATED. 😢

I do recommend more sun than shade to get them to bloom. Under watering is certainly a thing, i really dont think you can over water. If they are too dry the leaves may turn yellow or brown and fall. Also the flowers will usually quickly go from white to brown. I dont recommend sitting water, but watering daily is a good idea.

I would recommend the Panicle/Hardy Hydrangeas. You will want to water frequently. Also in your heat you may not get the pink transition like we get here in Michigan. www.gardencrossings.com/product-category/shrubs/hydrangea-hardy/
