We negotiate all the time at work -- for raises, promotions, time off -- and we usually go into it like it's a battle. But it's not about dominating, says organizational psychologist Ruchi Sinha. It's about crafting a relationship, understanding your needs and the other person's. Her three key steps will help you master this essential skill.

The tips given are very useful not only at work but also in any situation From the explanation in the video, it can be concluded that negotiation is not just a situation where two people talk to each other on ordinary topics but must pay attention to several things, namely 1. do your research 2. prepare your mentally for negotiation 3. put yourself in other person's shoes

I agree with the statement that she said about negotiations don’t always have to end up being who will win and who will lose. But, how should negotiations go well and make a benefit to both of the participans. Because, if the negotiations put forward of their emotions and egos, i think the negotiations can’t work and going well. And as she said in this Tedtalk Video, that we really have to find out more about negotiations, prepare ourselve especially our mentally before make a negotiating, and must be able to position ourselves the same as our negotiating opponents, so the negotiations that we want can run well and have a good results too.

this is very helpful, thanks very much. here to share some of my understanding of each point: 1. do research: you need to be clear about the current situation from your opponent's side and from you own side. Knowing sufficient information makes you more resourceful to plan your strategies, which gives you more power on the table. 2. prepare mentally: humans have emotions but negotiation is a dance floor you need to use more of intelligence not emotion. your feeling is the last thing you want to focus in negotiating, instead you need to focus on the thing itself; on the other hand, understand any refusal and obstacles are not the "ultimate" result. things can always change and you're the person to make it happen. 3. put yourself in other's shoes: even though you shouldn't focus on your feeling, it's critical to focus on the other person's feeling. you need to show your care about their consern and pressure. make them feel better in difficult situations.

The suggested approach lacks a very important concept, imo: the decision has to be mutually beneficial & stable/balanced. Think about a negotiation not as a dance but a deal: discussing each others problems and finding a joint solution. 1. Set your priorities; decide for yourself what you can give in exchange for something more important for you. 2. Determine a similar set of priorities for your opponent. 3. Find an offer that your opponent cannot refuse. 4. Think about where and how you will retreat if negotiations reach an impasse. 5. Practice with a friend who can act as your opponent, and then switch roles with him. 6. Start a real conversation by checking your opponent's most important problems and offering your solutions for them. 7. For your part, offer the easiest concessions first, gradually increasing the price as you negotiate the deal. Good luck!

I recently made a video about how the way the pandemic is being handled is causing inflation, high world hunger, high global debt, and issues with responding to climate change expectations and how this can be alleviated (The Talking Rain Ep. 2). This Ted Talk video about negotiations made me realize the reason people are not watching my video fully and allowing the envisioned goal to be achieved. Thank you! I messed up some aspects of the negotiation between the audience and I. Perhaps I should chop it into smaller bits for more retention.

Thank you. I work for a small firm they don’t have a structure of policy on paper so I have to just accept a lot of the time the rules and requirements they impose. I am working towards financial freedom that way I can have my own business.
@peglor
@peglor 2 жыл бұрын
Assuming that having your own business equates to financial freedom is very dangerous. Financial freedom is having $1 million+ in the bank and owning your home and being able to live off the investment earnings from this money without eating into to amount saved. Having your own business is swapping working for someone else for defined hours and defined income with working for yourself which will consume potentially all your hours while potentially earning nothing or putting you in debt.
@berymod1
@berymod1 2 жыл бұрын
True - that's why I am not assuming that having my own business equates financial freedom. I have financial responsibilities to tackle first, and then I plan to develop additional skills to start my own business. Two different goals. I enjoy working and the point I was making is from the video negotiating can sometimes be challenging since there are no policy to refer to. Company firm makes rules as they go. It is a smaller company.
@peglor

@@berymod1 Sounds like you've done your research :-). Knowing what you want is sometimes the hard part in making career plans. My priority is maximising my free time, so the usual US based pride in working overtime, not sleeping enough, having a side business or multiple jobs and so on sounds literally insane to me, but I can make a good living on a single job with the qualifications I have and even live quite comfortably on the unemployment payments available in my country if required. Best of luck in your endeavours!

Defensive pessimism is just a fancy way of saying lower your expectations. Because if your expectations for life aren't so high anymore then you get disappointed a lot less. Unmet expectations lead to bitterness, and bitterness leads to anger. And anger can be destructive and unjustified if expressed from selfish motives.

What you say so ironically is actually true - if you care more, you will get respective feedback. If you don't care, then others don't care which makes you care less in return - it's that self-fulfilling prophecy that thwarts any motion towards mutual respect and caring on a professional level. Humans are social beings with very sensitive "antennas" for social behaviour. So yeah... care of your co-workers to build a better team.

I don't negotiate anymore. This entire talk is about how to be a better wage slave. Work for yourself. Corporations have made the world a shittier place, don't work for them. You are allowed to steal from them like they steal from you. It's illegal for you to do it and legal for them to do. Just get a rifle stand your ground and work for yourself. If the wage slavers need cheap labor they can do the work for pennies themselves.
