The LG 49WL95C-W is an absolute beast of a monitor with its 5120 x 1440 resolution!
This is the perfect monitor for your minimal desk set up but, would the Samsung 49" CRG90 (LC49RG90SSUXEN) be a better purchase?
After watching many reviews from the likes of Linus Tech Tips, The Tech Chap & Sara Dietschy I was convinced this was the right monitor for me.

I also considered the Dell U4919DW and Philips 499P9H/00

Thank you for the review. I'm researching 49" Super Ultra Wide 5120x1440 displays and I'm heavily leaning towards this LG. I like it over the Samsung because of the better viewing angles with LG's IPS display compared to the Samsung. I do alot of team development work and often have someone sitting along side of me as I share information on my screen (lately I've been using Teams screen sharing more), and having wider viewing angles is very important to me. Regarding custom window snap grid management software, if you have an Nvidia GPU when you install the driver software it also installs the "NVIDIA Desktop Manager" (now renamed as "NVIDIA RTX Desktop Manager" but still works with pre RTX GPUs) which comes with template grids that can be customized to arrange your own snap quadrants.

Thank you for the review. Have you had a chance to look at Samsung CRG90's text quality. All of Reddit users were complaining that the text on the Samsung was grainy (it being a VA Panel), which made me research the LG 49WL95C-WE. Any other viewers input also appreciated. I am close to buying this and the 3 factors you mentioned aren't a concern though I am sucker for symmetry as well 🤣

Probably Samsung CRG90 will be a better choice for games/movies as color gamut/color volume is greater in it but G9 Neo will be even much better because of 15000-20000:1 contrast and a fantastic HDR support. If USB-C and speakers are worth buying LG 49, don't know, probably not. R1000 in G9 Neo is very suitable for this kind of format (no color/shape shifts in screen corners), even for graphics/design/architechture/work etc G9 Neo is very good, straight lines can be distiguishable in around 2 weeks and flat panels will seem to be (strangely enough) worse.

Nice post. I have two work machines with 3 high end IPS monitors each and i replaced them with this, same driver as you. Minus the annoying issues with Windows 10 and 11 with the sound i have about the same impressions as you on this model. I would like to ask, Thomas, i am having an issue with Windows recognizing it for audio after a recent update. Can you share with me what the name of the device is in Device Manager for the sound portion? Is it LG Ultra HD or LGQHD? I can't get the sound to work anymore. Regardless, great review

I believe you were better off by keeping this monitor instead of replacing it with Samsung about which you were pondering, since your LG's display technology IPS is superior to VA panel of the Samsung model for work and reading. If Samsung were producing IPS panels, I would go with higher curved (1000R) Odyssey G9 so that my eyes-to-pixels would be fairly constant across to horizontal line when the monitor is 1 meter away from me, which is my regular setup. But right now you should have a harder time to read text at either end of the screen since they are much farther to you than the middle. You mentioned yours was 1800R but I haven't seen any such data. It looks flatter to me. Can you provide a reference for the curvature data?
@ThomasMCM
@ThomasMCM 3 жыл бұрын
I stand corrected! According to this website it is 3800R. - www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/lg/49wl95c-w Anyway I prefer a flatter screen as it makes straight lines look "straighter" which is useful when working with graphics & CAD work.
@elusivelectron
@elusivelectron Жыл бұрын
@@ThomasMCM I also use mine for CAD. I am extremely happy with the color reproduction. I have had color issues with 3 separate Samsung monitors where vertical lines look a lighter shade than horozontal lines on the same layer. I've noticed that no one talks about whether the panel is an IPS or VA. There are pros and cons for both, but I am a fan of IPS personally as the color and lighting are much more crisp when watching content compared to VA. Nowadays VA colors in many displays are better than in IPS. You can compare this panel with G9 Neo on Rtings LG 49WL95C-W vs Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, for example (and even an older model Samsung CRG90 has got a better color gamut and color volume in SDR and HDR modes than this LG 49WL95C-W).

@@socialreport2836 just looked up the Samsung Odyssey Ark 55"... Holy cow that thing looks beautiful!
@socialreport2836
@socialreport2836 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisVog Yes, it's very good and it's also too expensive. Ark is basically an excellent "TV set" which can swivel. 1056 local zones for such a size is good but could be better as 32" G7/G8 Neo have got 1196 local zones and 2049 in G9 Neo and Ark is an HDR600 monitor, not HDR1000 as G9 Neo, so HDR will look great in a dark room but could be better in a bright room with HDR1000. An advantage of Ark compared to OLED/QD-OLED is that it can swivel, R1000 curve and no burn-in issue for PC use. Only for movies/gaming without swivel S95B is probably preferrable as much cheaper :)

Samsung has VA panel, and in this case the biggest advantage is higher refresh rate (120Hz) over LG - Philips is VA as well and is the most budget option. LG and Dell utilize the same IPS panel, but both of them are hardly available in the much higher price. I am also considering the 5k2k ultra-wide 21:9 screens, where the choice between sizes is much wider (34", 38" up to 40"), but also in this the price range I am not sure if two 32" 16:9 4k IPS displays won't be the better deal, even if I have to deal with the bezel in the middle...
