This has been one of the biggest changes to my game Dan. I've always never used a tee off the par 3s etc, as I considered myself confident and a decent enough ball striker, but recently I've started playing with a pro ( gaz from James channel) and he encouraged me to always use a tee where possible, it's totally transformed me off the tee and now I feel like I've been missing out for years 😂

My 24 year old son, playing off 3, never uses a tee on par-3s. Just finds a good patch of grass and places the ball down. Plays it like a shot from the fairway...be it 100 yards or 200 yards. He always takes a large divot and never lacks spin. He has 3 holes-in-one so not using a tee works for him, his swing and his mindset.

More interesting this one. No test with Pro, but have tested all tee heights with different irons. Use little red one with shorter irons, and no tee for 5/6 irons into par 3s.

Very timely vlog, Dan, as my course has tallish grass on tee boxes now, so on par 3s the ball is either teed too high or looks to be sitting in the rough. Teeing the ball at the level of the grass has led to poor strikes, so I'll try teeing the ball lower and see how that goes.

I normally use a broken wooden tee and have the ball just off the ground for irons the red tee for my hybrid and the blue on my 3wood

2 > 8 iron will use a broken wooden tee and push it down so it's between orange and red castle height. 9 iron or less will generally hit it off the deck as i feel i might slide the club underneath too much with a tee

For all my irons I use the wooden tees but at the height of your orange tee. ( as another has posted, usually a broken tee lying around the tee box 😉). Raise the height slightly for woods but not by much. I've also stopped using plastic tees anymore. Wood or Bamboo from now on.

Always orange tee height for me on iron tee shots, unless I need to take spin off... our second hole at Long Ashton can be tricky depending on wind. I've spun off the green a few times into the run off 😭

So where does Dame Laura's tapping the tee box come into it ? You do that too. I do it, I like a little help but not too much, I don't want to hit up with my hybrids let alone my irons. Am I missing out on somehting here ? Before you started on the numbers I thought the smash factor would change as strike would change and then you didn't menton smash. Would you see a change in smash doing this ? Its interesting to see how more knowledge can improve our game !! Its a winner all round

Yes Jack also said only an idiot would have the opportunity to tee the ball perfectly and refuse to do it. Think he was feeling grumpy that day because that's a bit strong for him 😄 I do use the castle tees (and I know everyone will say I don't I use wooden tees but they sell millions of them so someone else is using them apart from me) little orange tees for irons.. Reds (pushed down hard to sink them a wee bit) fairway woods and I use anything big enough (including wooden ones) for my driver.

I'm confused..shouldn't angle of attack with the ball on the deck be 2 0r 3 degrees negative..which would bring his contact more to the center of the face...and off a high tee wouldn't you then want about 2 degrees up for center contact...

I switched from a blue tee a few months ago to a red tee having watched a TXG video recently at one point I was playing off a yellow tee. May eventually get down to an orange tee! Would be useful to see the numbers on a bigger screen could you link it up to a bigger monitor?

I use the little orange tee pushed into the ground I think the ball should be teed up if the rules allow when I didn’t tee up if it went wrong I’d blame not teeing up so it takes that excuse out !!!!

Well for irons I use a red tee and for my hybrids and 3 wood I use a blue tee has it gives me more height has I struggle for red tee for hybrids and woods

Never understood why people use a tee for the irons. You can't use one in the fairway, so why on a tee box? You may not realize it, but you'll change your swing when you do. JM2C

Some fairway lies are better than others. Some teebox lies see better than others. A tee allows the best lie possible on the teebox.

Maybe it’s a range issue but the auto feeding tees don’t go low enough and people get used to higher tees for irons? My issue is probably in my mind but I can hit from a fairway ok but of a tee (orange) on a par 3 I want too much from that shot and it doesn’t work out quite often.

Would it not be better to also show & tell the 'proper gap/distance' between the top of the tee & the turf rather than merely cite the color of the tees (given the different colors/length of tees being sold in the marketplace) ?

I use a red tee on a par 3 and my miss is mainly short, I will use a lower tee from now on. However I see people hit the ground to make a ‘tee’ from the ground lifting. Does this have a similar effect to a higher tee?
