Thank you for the great comments guys. I define standing square as standing with a leg forward but facing attacker with both shoulders. A common response is that standing square leaves you open to a knee in the groin or a headbutt. These attacks are unlikely, if so, the benefit outweighs the risk. Either way these attacks are easily defended. Here are two follow up videos to address these objections: Intimidation, Threats, & Knees to the Groin | 3 Ways How to Fight Back!!! (please watch at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4K0pHuHh8mFq9k) and How to Defend Yourself in a Fight against a Grab & Headbutt Attack (please watch at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goaXqHqwhL6Zo9k). Feel free to comment, but remember the point of this video is how to deal with someone trying to intimidate you at a pre fight stage. Oh, and yes you should have your hands up, it’s a given. The example in the video is designed to show body position. Have a great day my friends, thanks for staying with us.

Fight SCIENCE That smile is creepy. But other than that a good video. Just one question though: How do I deal with a choleric person I cant avoid (we live together. Actually were 9 persons.. I had to find something cheap within 24 hours and now I have to live her another 6 months...) but who always gets mad about something and always threatens me to slap and/or kill me. Usually he pushes me around and hes itching for a fight. Hes always commanding me stuff and tries to dominate. I often say no, but I fear a fight. Because Im very sure that I cant beat him and that itll be mortal. Because either I have to find a weapon or he beats me dead. The interactions usually end with me leaving the room with unfinished business and either leave the building or lock myself up in my room. Please dont suggest me the obvious "move out". Im working on it!

Fear and intimidation mostly matter ‘before’ fights and the best way of dealing with that for most people is a) avoiding those situations and b) not letting them result in actual fights. So the best advice here would be how to deflate that moment… using advice by people who are often faced with those situations - and from people who often are (or were) the ‘in your face’ aggressive types.

laughing or smiling works great when people try to intimidate you. I personally find it hilarious when people try to intimidate me; i once had all my fingernails and toenails pulled off with a set of pliers, i grew up around meth labs all around my neighborhood, most of my family have mental problems (a sociopath uncle, a bipolar mom, a schizophrenic uncle) and all i can think is "what the fuck do you think you can do to me?" when some wannabe tough guy acts all tough. I rarely get in fights though, partially because when you dont react the way they expect they tend to back off, and artially because most people that know me know my family :P

Just recently I was at a club and I was antagonized by a guy a lot bigger than me. He got in my face, he was angry but he's attempt to make himself look larger put him completely off balance. Obviously this man didn't know how I fight because he put his chin right in front of me. I quickly hit him with a right elbow on the left side of his jaw causin severe shock. I then pushed him to the ground where he sat looking up at me, dazed and confused. I felt pretty bad at first. But now I feel great telling the story xD

I've only taken Tae Kwon Do lessons for a few months in highschool. And one of the things that our instructor taught us is periphery vision. Me having a hobby of reading detective stories, made it a habit, trying to pay attention to many things at once, scanning my surroundings. And it's useful not only in self defense situations (which I am so, so, so fortunate haven't gotten the experience of happening, thank goodness), but also in daily life. Driving and crossing the road, for instance. Or grocery shopping (I know something is where when I need it to buy next time), or where the empty line on a cashier. Or, just walking mindfully in a crowded place so as not to bump yourself, etc. Training periphery vision is so, so useful it saved me from troubles outside of self defense.

Iv been a professional bouncer for over 23 years and I'd say you obviously came up with these rules in a DOJO rather than years of street experience. If you are in an intimidating position you can't thing quickly unless you have been in that position meny times before like myself, keeping your head is the main thing. Also standing square on means you have no balance and it's harder to get your hands up to protect yourself (as the person is talking try rubbing your chin as if your thinking, that way your hand is up close to protect you). These guys who do these videos are usually full of crap. Take it from someone who has had meny meny fights in the street the ring and cage aswell as forces and private security abroad.Just get out of the situation as fast as you can. Don't worry about people laughing because you run away,its the safer option if you are not a fighter.Or better watch for situations developing and get away before it starts.
@fightscience8 жыл бұрын
+Jim p thanks for your comment, it's much appreciated. There were a number of key facts that you missed. The main being standing off side with your hands up when someone squares off to you. As a bouncer for 23 years I am sure you already know this position as standard procedure for Control and Restraint. Interestingly I've recently seen two other high level guys in Krav Maga and Jiu Jitsu teaching the same concept. Both of these guys are ALSO street tested. Lastly it is not likely that you will be pushed over as common sense bids that you have a leg forward. Please watch our follow up video this week on the matter. Thank you for being open minded enough to comment. It's much appreciated. Perhaps check out some of our other videos. Have a great day.
@jimp71738 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, BUT you say to try stand to the side. Yes of course you do but the person will turn towards you. And you say keep square on to him, NO NO NO sorry this is wrong. If you are square you are a larger target, you have no balance and you cannot roll your upper body from any attacks. You also show in the video the defender with hand's down all the time. I consider myself semi-quick but I wouldn't get my hands up to protect myself from the slowest of attacker from there. Someone like yourself who has trained for meny years may be able to use these techniques. But you must remember you are showing people who have NO training and NO experience of fighting. And when it happens the first thing they do is panic and forget EVERYTHING.
@fightscience8 жыл бұрын
+Jim p ok fair point you made at the end of your comment about the difference in experience between myself and people who don't know how to defend themselves. Please bare in mind that this is an extremely short video which can't cover every eventuality as it's not a class. There are very simple answers to your objections that I have (in other videos ) and will continue in later videos. However, There's no excuses implied, but understand that there is limited capacity on a 5 minute video to cover every eventuality. Lastly, this is just one approach that has worked in reality for me many many times. Which, I haven't demanded that everyone do as I say or that others are wrong. Instead I've just shared my experience and kindly asked others to share their experience or alternative of how to deal with someone trying to intimidate them. I stand by the approach of not escalating a situation that can be talked down or avoided. Standing in a boxing stance is antagonistic. After 23 years on the door are you very aware of the importance of body language and physical dominance when someone is trying to intimidate you. Anyway thanks for the discussion. Have a great day my friend.
@jimp71738 жыл бұрын
Thank you again for your reply. And while I do agree with much of what you are saying, I feel being in a good defensive/offensive stance is better incase the situation does escalate,rather than in a passive stance where you cannot defend yourself. But I think the main think to teach students weather on video's like this or in a class is that there are people out there that are dangerous and can turn on you for NO REASON whatsoever. So the best defence is to stay in a group and to learn to spot trouble long before it starts, the same way people like us can. We have been around trouble for so long we can spot it easy, but for most people who just want to enjoy a night out it's not that simple. This is when a designated driver should also be on the lookout for potential trouble and get the group out. Being macho is overrated. Thanks for the video and for the replys good luck with all your other video's.

Nice Debate guys..I'm an MMA Fighter & I Have fear of Fighting In the streets ( of course when I'm threatened) because...when I'm around a lot of people I am very well known In my City for being a trained fighter...so I have a fear of fighting In the streets around a lot of people because most of my 1 on 1's turn into 3 on 1's or 8 on 1's ..etc. In Fact I recently got jumped by 13 people over a basketball Game but it started out as a 1 on 1 & even then the guy caught me completely off guard when I was sitting on the Green box after playing basketball...so That's why I've been watching these videos. I've always been told to never allow anyone to get that close. Make two attempts to distance yourself, if that doesn't work and the perp continues to close in on you, he's 1. told you it's not over and he intends to go further, and 2. He's built up some momentum as he comes in. Feints work well as it distracts his focus somewhere else, usually opening up a spot to counter his continued aggression, and I mean a centerline snap punch where he's left thoroughly dazed and disabled. Then leave. If you can't, then continue with a game over strike. Again, the important thing is to relinquish his control of the situation and watch carefully for your opening. You can not hesitate . . . . . . if you can't deliver the power with your hand, use your elbow.

This is some of the best quick-teach advice I've seen and it helps put some things in perspective. both techniques I have concentrated on and some simple truths that I had not quite worked out on my own. I am not a martial artist, per se, but I have been a student of self-defense in several formats and in a professional perspective as well. Thank you.
@eddiebear348 жыл бұрын
i done martial arts and boxing for over 30 years. not sure i agree with the standing square on idea. you arent hampering your vision from strikes coming up like a hook. because your head is still square on. your field of vision remains the same if you're body is angled off or square on. if it gave you better vision to stand sqaure on, boxers and martial artists would be doing it while competing. not only that but you are making your body a much bigger target if stood square on and your balance os WAY off. if it were me and i was in this situation. id say its better to hold your hands up infront of you. left foot forward and right foot out to the side slightly and behind (for balance and a good anchor) hold your hands out like you are extending your personal space and using them as a marker. as soon as the person brings his body in contact with your hand then its obvious hes gonna attack. hit him first and hit him hard. id aim for the solar plexus as no matter how solid someones body is. one hard hit there will stop anyone. another technique would be to place the lead hand firmly over his face and eyes when he gets inside your personal space. it will cause confusion and give you the chance to inflict damage with the other hand, foot or whatever.... all in all... dont wait for him to throw first. you might not get a chance to hit back. as soon as its past the point of no return, hit first and hit hard. the person who lands the first strike. is usually the one who is landing the last

Similar advice from a muay thai perspective. Squared shoulders, front to back cross stance so a shove won't send you on your ass. Keep your hands up in the most non threatening way you can. Say things like let's talk about it, even if you dont intend to, it gives the illusion you aren't ready to attack. If they invade past the barrier you're creating very low kneecap or groin kick if they evade backward clinch the head and knees to face, if the strike connects they will likely lean forward in either scenario if not drop outright. I believe it's one of the stronger openings the mma and systems like krav maga has adopted from muay thai. Low kicks are extremely hard to read especially if the upper body appears non threatening. It also is extremely low risk. A block or grab is unlikely and evading only puts you back at square one. Low risk, high reward. But this is generally low lethality as seen in the combos common use in mma. I really like krav magas answer to this to, though even the first move can be fatal so you better mean it... Palms out in a "no" fashion chin down looking up over your eyebrows great peripheral of waist and arms and looks downright apologetic, hands close to center mass and low. If they impede passed a certain point to your hands drive the palm directly up from center mass which again is extremely hard to see. If you can ascertain before if they are right or left handed drive with the opposite arm so you can grab and control the power arm as they fall back and down. From here it can be as lethal or non lethal as your willing to risk. A very rapid kick to the throat being a life ender. Running being the least. I really love the krav move because it is so damn deceitful and the muscle memory required is very easy to train on a dummy or a willing partner at full speed w soft touch. The muay thai move relies more on skill and how they respond to a strike is different depending. For muscle memory I know this is sadistic as fuck but it's so vital and I had a great teacher burn into my head. Sing pop goes the weasel in your head practicing and immediately fire and compete the motion as fast as you can on "pop". Do it till you can finish the movement before the word weasel w a weighted target. Then do it to the real song. Make the attack queue touching your hands in ANY WAY the pop. You'll fire off like a mouse trap. It sounds silly but it one of the most rapid easy to learn dangerous moves I've seen. If you push up hard enough the head snapping back alone will very likely paralyze or kill them and if you drive back and down the head will contact the floor first for even more lethality. If my life is in danger and I'm cornered this will likely be my go to. Btw I love the boxers take on the move, I never considered that one. They come from a similar methodology you can tell.

@543567768 жыл бұрын
FistFullOfNope You ever tried that in real life ?
@Kapsones338 жыл бұрын
Andrew Fishburn Yeah many times, always works because the anatomy of the body can't do anything else when the nose gets damaged like that (it's the softest part of the body besides the balls). If you end up in the street fight your opponent always plays the macho man role which means all his movements will be big to try to intimidate you. If you use quick techniques like this you have the element of surprise.
@543567768 жыл бұрын
FistFullOfNope Which is why a headbutt (properly glasgow style to the face) is more effective. I've been punched on the nose many times, you get used to it mate.
@Kapsones338 жыл бұрын
I find a headbutt too risky, you need to keep your distance and imo the best thing to do is that technique or just the good ol' fist fight.

jjhenson you exemplify why the modern day man is such the p*#@$ that he is. Learn how to square up and hold your own or keep your mouth closed. I'll take a male nutkicker before I'll ever respect some lil b... that has to hide behind the barrel BC he can't handle himself in a man to man.
@jjenson20068 жыл бұрын
Bilal Abdullah jjhenson?? I'm going to guess you're trying to spell my handle because it's the closest to mine than others. First of all, my comment was more about humor than anything, which is why there is a smiley at the end. Secondly, although I own guns, I never carry one with me because I don't live in a high crime area. If I ever did carry a gun, it wouldn't be to use against a weaponless attacker, unless I felt my life was in imminent danger. Thirdly, someone asked what to do if the person was 6'4 with years of martial arts training. In other words, if the guy has a huge advantage over you and was hell bent on killing you. If the guy knocked someone down, straddled them and proceeded to punch them in the face with no mercy, having a gun on you is not such a bad idea. Fourth, I can post whatever the fuck I want. You can take your own advice and keep your own mouth closed; and maybe learn how to write too. Fifth, hiding behind a keyboard and claiming your toughness has to be one of the most pathetic things you can do on the internet. Usually people who act that way online are actually the exact opposite. They are pussies and are projecting their cowardliness onto others to make them feel more like the man they wish they were.

My approach is exactly what you say especially when looking at the eyes and body. But I always step back on an angle and try to keep the distance. Reason I do this is front leg defense from a groin kick. Hands in front in a diffusive manner. Also watch his elbows if a punch is thrown. Elbow moves slower than a fist. Easier to block. My wing chun mixed with freestyle karate and 2 instructors saying to try to diffuse this way. Btw it worked over 20 years ago and only had to do it once. Cheers

The 1 million dollar question: how to deal with fear? Even those that are trained to fight can be paralyzed by fear and if they react, then they have often tunnel vision, lack of fine motor skills and throw out all they've learned in favor of wild flailing attacks. To make it even worse, when panic is replaced by a berserkers rage, then they'll not notice that they're injured nor that they have to stop attacking, since they've won, easily resulting in an overkill and hence charge for murder (second degree).
@fightscience8 жыл бұрын
+edi you make a valid point. I'm going to do a series of videos on the subject of fear management, starting with the effects of tunnel vision. We're in the process of editing it. In a ring or a cage I sure can beat em up he'll send em one after another - no worries - but on the street..a whole another animal. I've seen a humble looking man take out a freakin katana from under his jacket and almost slicing a taxi driver before my eyes - you never know what to expect from ppl on the street. A lead elbow from that position is the most direct, effective and brutal strike you can land when someone jams you like that. Elbows are your best weapon in that close. The hook is right there as well. The belief that you need to push to create space is just that, a belief. If you’re going to take the time to push, you’re better served taking the time to deal some pain.

Well there is a difference of what you are asking and what you are saying. Also trained in martial arts but also in street scenarios on the Law Enforcement side and the Civilian side. First and foremost I would try to talk my way out of it keeping a minimum of an arms distance from the subject. "Squaring" off is not a good thing because a spear rush (or any for that matter will always catch you off guard) will make you lose balance. I prefer the fighting stance regardless of the "telegraphing" a punch (only for those who strike one handed or those who know how to backhand). I also prefer my hands and arms minimum at above waist level for immediate confrontation. You as a "victim" have to chose when you want to stop being a victim. You can run away early, run after defense or stay and fight for your life. If one has come closer than arms length then you must make a choice. Every thing else after that does not matter for you have no idea what your opponent knows...or doesn't know. You can say 'I would do this and do that' but truth be told..you opponent might be equally trained in "this and that".
@infectionsman8 жыл бұрын
Bingo, its all about the inability to react in time if someone is closer than arms length.
@varanid98 жыл бұрын
ANY reaction is slower than an action. You stand square so you can throw the first blow; forget that "never hit first" crap as that's a one way ticket to losing. The best defense is truly a good offense. As for legalities, better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Perhaps it's time we forced laws to be on the side of aggressive law abiding citizens for a change, instead of trying to condition us all into sheep. But, I'm sure the conventional minded will be outraged at this "nuttiness", as they have been well conditioned to be.
@trissuper18 жыл бұрын
+ tangled Line , awesome comment!!! once they are within arm length range, it is decision time . Because in that range it is very dangerous and the opponent can be a crazy mf that will bash in your brains or maybe it is just a loudmouth that will be scared even if u just push him. i will do this and then that and if would do this u must blablabla, it doesnt work, i would be so nervous my brain would stop working. if your not a fighter and u know it , buy some good mace and spray the bully, game over and then run away or kick him in the head, better run away but thats your choice
@tangledline8 жыл бұрын
You can always detach your arm and throw it at them from 10 feet away. Sometimes that works for me. It is getting it back that is hard...Sometimes I overthrow it and I am screwed with one arm.
@nicknamednickify8 жыл бұрын
then when he reaches down to pick up your arm, you might be able to rush in and detach his arm and slap him with it just for a little surprise...Sometimes that works. And yes, the obvious question then is what can happen at that close range afterwards. Sometimes, yes, it just ends up in a slappity slap slap contest of "why are you hitting yourself? huh? why are you hitting yourself?" But you've got to think in terms of defusing and disarming the situation like this before it all gets out of hand. Its a hands down lose lose situation no matter how you look at it.

Nice video! It’s rare that anybody on here actually talks about that aspect of fighting and not just the technical part of fighting. I think it’s really important for a school regardless of the art to have at least one class each week or a couple or more spending time on the build up to a situation and not just the technical response to a situation, because you can learn all the techniques in the world and you can spend years in classes learning moves or defense but if you don’t prepare for the psychological aspect of an attack and the fact that some of these people attacking you might just be a little sneaky about it. Some of them have the ability to be extremely calm and charming and two seconds later they’ve got a knife at you or sucker punching you. Do you think it’s possible to make a follow up video doing a little bit of acting on the attackers part?

I've defended this rationale to so many martial artists who want to keep the side angle. I tell them at such close range, being sideways is not a small target... they can't miss, so stoppretending you're a smaller target up close. You want to make ALL your weapons available to you... stand square to them. This is most effective. Learn to use sticky hands. Knees, elbows, angled attacks, shoulder and head butts, pressure point strikes, flurry of punches. Turning away halves your capabilities

Facing someone like you would be to break you down from the waist down, work on the knees, kick or punch in groin then as you go down to hold your balls i will be able to punch you for a K.O. as you would be lower and im 5' 8" 165lbs. It is possible, wasting time trying to fight you stand up & up would be a problem if you grabbed a hold of me and if you did i would eye gouge you or head butt you in the nose ridge. Big guys are actually not that bad unless they grab you or sucker punch you. Keeping distance and strike in sensitive areas not wasting time trying to box.
